  1. Exposing poor business practices by a large retailer. She's framing this as a human interest story. You don't think the CBC would be all over this?
  2. I wonder why she never went to a news outlet with her story. A 3-minute video leaves more questions than answers.
  3. In the private sector, however, they are becoming irrelevant. When you have a Unionized employee that will grieve being asked to do anything above and beyond their role they will not be able to compete with other, more flexible employees.
  4. Spain has 25% unemployment. Who cares if the working conditions are better if only 3/4 of the people actually have work.
  5. Or the Canadian system where only about 15% of the workforce is Unionized. Unless you're in Skilled Trades or a Public Servant, chances are you aren't in a Union. Canada is outperforming both Europe and the US. Define working conditions BTW? Do good working conditions mean that you have a pre-set role and if you deviate from that role you can get grieved?
  6. A certain brand of Yogurt is innovation? There's an old documentary about Wal-Mart where people would go to their home offices in Arkansas and basically beg to be one of their vendors. Entrepreneurship is a high-risk game and Loblaws is, by no means, the only game in town. Perhaps she was asking too much to sell her product, the video doesn't say. I feel sympathetic to this lady's business problems but to equate her business spat with her husband's health issues is kind of inappropriate if you ask me.
  7. It gets tiresome hearing a justification for Unions being relevant today because labour laws they helped craft in the past. Slow Clap. What have you done for society lately? We see from Michigan yesterday that Unions do more for thuggish mob rule than provide better and more competitive working conditions for its members.
  8. There has to be a teacher present still. Insurance blah blah blah. Student Safety blah blah blah. Teachers are only interested in student safety when others are going to be brought in to do the job, they refuse to do. School's have to hire private security now because teachers refuse to patrol the school during lunch hour etc.
  9. People involved in public education don't want other systems because it would force them to compete for enrollment.
  10. Not if they force companies to allow unions. BTW I wouldn't be using the Europeans as as economies to admire.
  11. I was just responding to the statement that perhaps, instead of getting rid of public service unions, private companies should unionize. Forcing companies to allow Unions, now that's some good freedom for everyone.
  12. Just as fighting with the Unions puts you up against a significant voting block so does fighting against the Catholics. A politician that wants to repeal the Catholic system would likely be toast. I haven't even heard the NDP discuss it. Dalton hypocritically called the John Tory's faith-based funding plan segregation while his wife teaches in the Catholic system (if I remember correctly)
  13. Well considering collective bargaining with a private company and the government is completely different. . . NO! A private company can shut the doors if the workers try to unionize. What would happen if the government tries that. I'd love to see it.
  14. So Michigan is a Right to Work State now. I would call this a defeat for the Unions. Does this mean UAW workers in Detroit can opt out? That'd be interesting.
  15. There are some that say that the Province threatened the two separate school boards (French and Catholic), that if they didn't make a deal the Province would try to de-fund them. I have no evidence to prove that but I wouldn't be surprised

Is this thread about Darwin the Ikea Monkey? http://postmediacanadadotcom.files.wordpress.com/2012/12/ikea_monkey_20121209_25263445-e1355108747397.jpg?w=660&h=440&crop=1 http://www.cbc.ca/ne...c-pet-laws.html
  17. So it's 12/12/12. The last time in almost a century we get to find some weird satisfaction from having the Day/Month/Year lineup.

      Moonlight Graham

except last year when it was 11/11/11, which is the coolest of them all since them is all he same digit

      The calendar is arbitrary....

  18. I'm not outraged. It was Jacee that was saying that it was younger workers that were losing their jobs because of downsizing in the Civil service. I hardly think you can blame Harper because younger people are being laid off.
  19. So they should be getting rid of senior employees close to retirement then.
  20. So CUPE would be fine with the government deciding who exactly gets laid off?
  21. That's the Union's fault not Harper. I'm sure he'd prefer to get rid of people from the top down.
  22. Private schools cost more than post-secondary education (University education is highly subsidized). Some private schools cost Tens of Thousands of Dollars to attend. I would advocate for a voucher-type system where schools actually have to compete for students and not just get money regardless.
  23. Probably because they were in a minority government situation and because they've been busy with the recession for the last 4 years.
  24. Yeah it's out of control. Looks like the CPC are trying to tackle that problem though. Hopefully they succeed, Paul Martin did a pretty good job trimming the Federal Civil Service.
