  1. Support Our Troops - Bring them Home instead of having them push corporate agendas.
  2. And with it will go all of the R&D and white collar jobs... Conservatives keep trying to paint it like we are going to keep our high tech jobs... When everything is made in China, they will become the top innovators. Death by China is a good documentary... the first step of the solution is to somehow get China to float it's currency.
  3. Just caught this. Shady lives the economically depressed region of London, ON and somehow manages to believe that corporations will save us all... Anyways, It was good times for rent there. I paid only $680 a month for a 1 bedroom 7th floor apartment that included parking, pool and utilities.
  4. You are making a choice to access content which has been restricted by the content copyright holder who made the content. No one is holding a gun to your head, saying that you have to watch it. If you aren't going to pay for it, you can always NOT WATCH IT. I'm no saint when it comes to torrents but, I at least recognize that it is their right to sell it for a price and not my right to take it for free. Generally, I use them to preview content before buying (Video Games, Music). If it's good enough for me to experience, I go and pay money for it.
  5. 3D printing will make almost anything easily made locally... Even houses can be 3D printed... There are going to be very few 20th century jobs in the new economy.
  6. It's not about learning precise practical skills. It's about developing the process or learning and practicing practical skills. Using a hammer/saw is useful, using and maintaining a computer is useful, basic car auto maintenance is useful, etc. Just as much of the academic knowledge is not fully revelant to their life but, teaching them to learn, problem solve and think is.
  7. Well, Conservative media relies on defamation of truth and slandering of good conscience opinions... I suppose they expect it to become the norm and widely accepted? Kidding aside, website administrators should be held liable if they were asked to remove the defamatory comments and chose not to. This has implications for people who believe lies very passionately. I can think of numerous occasions that extremists have made comments they believe wholly to be true but are patently false.
  8. GM had a problem with pensions because they said to the Ontario Provincial Government "We are too big to fail, let us not have to put as much money into them because we will be able to keep going anyways" Ontario said "We are stupid, ok." Then GM did as they said they would... when times got tought it was doomed to require external support. If Alberta can't afford their public pensions, it's because Alberta is being conned by the oil companies extracting resources in the province. The Ontario Teacher's Pension Plan is one of the most successful plans when it comes to getting returns. Even they are in a deficit because of the artificially low interest rates being used to prop up the economy with consumer spending while big business lobbies to download costs onto the workers without paying them anything more.
  9. I'm always skeptical of these videos simply because someone who's just trying to further their career uses them to push their own ambition. The students are often coached to make it look more effective than it actually is. They call this "Team Teaching" in Ontario and it works most effectively when you have many classes of the same grade level.
  10. Again, being close to many people in education. Around 6-7 years ago the ministry started to push "new math" into the classroom. This let the children pick how they answered questions, and effectively killed practicing math.... heaven forbid students have to repeat tasks to burn the process into memory. Most of the articles I have read blame teachers. Since the number of teachers educated in math has remained relatively the same.... and only really the initiatives pushed by the ministry have differed... The cause is obvious. Airy fairy stuff works in some environments but math processes are logical and defined at the high school level and below. You need to learn and remember the process before you can creatively use it. The real issue is that the people at school boards and ministry need new initiatives to move up the ladder. They messed with something to move to a new job because of how "new and out there" they are. They messed with something that was working fine and screwed it up.
  11. Lavish? And you argue that we need to get rid of pensions because only civil servants and autoworkers get them? Everyone gets one (CPP), every loyal employee who spends their life building company profits deserves a pension for that work. All we have done in the last recent history is download responsibility from the employer to the employee without paying the employee a cent more. It's sickening.
  12. ... Are you serious? Media Corporations do not have fairly liberal beliefs unless you are talking about social policies like abortion or racism or gay/lesbian issues. Only one major newspaper endorsed anyone other than Harper. They even failed to report an oil spill in Alberta that happened 3 days before the election until 2 days after the election.
  13. It is naive to believe that open lessons keep students from texting and tweeting rather than doing their work. Teachers are not always the problem.
  14. ... This is just an abuse of the system. We need these crooks who are signing taxpayer rights away to corporations in the Trans-Pacific Partnership out.
  15. Talk to any high school teacher. The reality is that they are mostly used for texting, tweeting and bullying students and teachers by taking videos and posting them online. People envision all of the learning possibilities and yes, there are some. But nothing that can't be accomplished with any other practical tool. Audio/Video - Microphone/Video Camera, Apps? Websites that have been offered for free for years. The "Net Value" or "Value Added" of using a cellphone over just as available tech tools does not exist. It'd be like me bringing in a Nintendo DS to class. There might be one lesson I could use it for but, the rest of the time it's just a gaming distraction. Students are too addicted to their technology, there is an appropriate time and place. The problem is that parents aren't actually teaching their kids how to use phones responsibly and are leaving it up to the schools to do so.
  16. Tor browser to access the "Deep Web" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tor_(anonymity_network) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_Web It's where all the paedophiles and illicit substance buyers went when their IRC, and other methods of contact became too mainstream and easily compromised. As a techy, I was curious about and read up on this stuff. Found out that there isn't much on Tor and .Onion deep web for people without souls. Decided to stay away. Maybe it has changed since a few years ago. If governments started cracking down on internet use, Tor/DeepWeb would get more content for human use.
  17. Well, HBO shows adult oriented/mature content shows. You can still request that the porn channels be blocked. What if they reversed it to a voluntary "opt-in" to the porn block? Cable is heavily regulated and not just anyone can broadcast a signal. It's mostly full of corporate messaging. I truly feel that our corporate "overlords" are scared that the internet is so open.
  18. You can block most of them using AdBlock but, some still get through. I stopped subscribing to cable TV because I didn't want my children's minds being formed by commercial ads telling them what they need to want and what they need to be like. We subscribe to Netflix and it's great for this reason. There are no commercials and choosing a higher learning value show is instant, rather than just watching what is on.
  19. One has to request porn on Cable TV. Should porn be offered by default on all mediums with easy access? It made sense to "opt-in" on cable TV, why is the internet different? Is there any scientific proof of "opt-in porn's" benefit to society? The majority of porn is extremely unrealistic and sets up unrealistic intercourse expectations but, the same could be said about every single disney or teen movie when it comes to relationships. I'd rather ban commercials trying to convince self conscious young men that they need to shave their bodies or be mocked, that is detrimental and only offers profit to the one convincing you that you are in fact disgusting.
  20. He could already be dead. Conservatives seem to want supersized government pretty badly the way they write about Snowden. He's no angel... He's more of a tea partier fighting against big government. Except, instead of just pretending to fight big government and selling out to the highest bidder like most tea party members... he's just making everyone aware of how big the U.S. government is becoming in the information age.
  21. I was surprised about 2% gain. The real travesty is not unions fighting for their workers benefits, compensation and working conditions. The real travesty is how the public simply accepts that corporations no longer share their record profits in the form of increased benefits, compensation and working conditions with their workers. The slant put on these stories by the media corporations to support their bretheren is simply to get people to come to terms with the fact that they are paid less and to hate someone who makes more instead of the corporation who refuses to raise wages.
  22. I don't want him to cross the floor. I just appreciate a politician that actually stands for something. The current conservative party is being run by unelected PMO staffers. To the point that an MP feels the need to stand up and say something, breaking the whip. This is important.
  23. This should be the end of the discussion. Unless it affects the bottom line of some corporations who have a lot of money to convince some people that it is in our interest to be blind on the matter. Let's just take ingredient labels off all products. The consumer does not deserve this information without effort. Anyone who cares can contact the company to find out what's in it.
  24. That's not the issue. People want to know about naturally produced vs non-natural occurring product. If you don't care, you can ignore the small notice squeezed onto some spot of the packaging you'd likely not even see unless you were looking to begin with.
  25. Why do you love corporations known to bribe politicians to spread poison into our food system so much? Over small scale organic farmers? You've been trained well by the corporate propaganda. Labelling is no big deal. It should be a consumers right to be conveniently informed in the way they want to be informed. Especially when the nature of the product makes it easy to confuse the origin of the product. The cost is negligible to put it on and educates consumers about the origin of the product. This is good. I still think it would have little effect. If you had the opportunity at the gas station to buy gas called "Unethical Gas" and "Ethical Gas", knowing that the unethical gas comes from war, unregulated environmental destruction, etc, but sold for 30 cents less than ethical gas... do you think that people would switch?
