Why is educating people a dishonest tactic? Why are you arguing against this? This costs absolutely nothing and puts more power in the hands of the consumer. "Contains GMO's" is all that's needed. The customer can then choose to buy it, or not. Or do more research and contact the company if they care to find out. It's simply ridiculous for anyone to argue that consumers should be kept in the dark because of "choice". In truth, they are given a more educated choice with proper labelling. This is something that any rationale person should agree to. Consumers should have the ultimate power, not the corporations selling the product. I don't know if I'd change my purchasing habbits too much. I think it might have the opposite effect that the Anti-GMO crowd wants, when people realize how prevalent it actually is... the shock value will probably drop and people will become complacent.

It would vary. LCBO has artificially inflated foreign wines by paying more than what they are worth so they can sell it for a higher price. They have some sort of restriction on how much more then can charge than their purchase price. The cheapest beer would see no drop in price, because the cheapest price is regulated by the government but, more expensive options could drop in price. We do have the right to not shop at the LCBO and brew our own... Can't distill but home brewing methods can still get strong drinks. Just not distilled strong (which is then watered down most of the time in mix anyways)

Well, it's true though. If you rely on drinking alcohol to have a good time, that is the definition of alcoholic Reliance on alcohol. They have lots of those places in Ontario too. Fermenting is so easy. I brew my own hard cider (considered one of the easiest things to home brew). Pour juice/cider into fermentation bucket, add yeast and seal, wait 7-10 days, bottle with some sort of sugar to carbonate, wait a minimum of 3-4 weeks, drink up..

Actually, most technology that started the process was invented because someone was trying to make their life easier. Most of the people who actually spent time inventing things in the 20th century did not end up filthy rich. They did so to further science, to further knowledge, and to make a name for themselves. The perversion that conservatives push, the idea that advancement only comes through greed, is just not a reality. Our economy pushes products that break sooner, and on purpose to ensure that people need to keep buying products. ALSO - touch screen tablets have been around since before Apple's products. Apple is just better at convincing people that they need them.

The current conservatives are essentially scientific neanderthals. They hate science, research, study, information, and knowledge because it often goes against their pro-corporate ideology. That is why they've been cracking down on the study of reality... because we all know that reality has a socialist bias

How the rich keep geting richer, look over there!
MiddleClassCentrist replied to WWWTT's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
All ideology. Current practice for corporations is to take handouts and tax decreases and spend them overseas, dividends, lobbying for more anti-consumer policies. The net benefit of dropping their taxes is NOT being realized because the theory that corporations benevolently pass savings on to the consumer is a lie, the theory that they share gains with employees never held true for the overwhelming majority of corporations and is less true today in this austerity climate. If corporations want to move to some crappy 3rd world country and live tax free they'd have done it already, earnings are taxed in the jurisdiction they are made. (or should be, without loopholes) If they want to do business here they have to pay the tax here. -

Losing ground would be a widening income gap by percentage. The gap is widening. 42/100 = 42% 52/135 = 38.5% And that top figure includes a lot of people with stagnant or dropping wages. The top 20% starts at ONLY 60k/year... http://www2.macleans.ca/2011/10/25/rank-your-income-where-do-you-stand-compared-to-the-rest-of-canada/ $60,000/year is not rich... not wealth. That is quite middle class. -
Teachers Should Be Paid More
MiddleClassCentrist replied to socialist's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
I just hope the teacher hating phase has been tired out for another few years. The liberals saw the writing on the wall and stole the PC mantra of death to teachers. They caused, and solved their own problem. -

They have always been voluntary, if you don't feel that your work is appreciated and you don't have to do it. You don't do it. -
How do you even know what the deal is? How do they? Media blackout, nothing has been released. Socialist, you completely forgot about the new seniority based hiring process. You have to be an occasional teacher to apply to the, temporary teacher list (LTO), or to contract. 5 most senior candidates must be considered. You'll be on the bottom, if you manage to get on.

Thanks Sun News for bringing us Manning Conference

The only thing that has driven our wealth this last century is SCIENCE. It's not that we are "wealthier", it's that technology and invention have improved our lives. In fact, if you look at our wages that have stagnated for years vs inflation, we are actually technically poorer but... able to afford more stuff as technology improved. If our conservatives were really about competition and innovation they would be investing like crazy in grassroots business and cutting subsidies/tax breaks to large and healthy businesses. But, that is not in favour of our current corporatocracy who has the government in their back pocket. Just look at the history of the legislation the conservatives have passed in the last few years... it's not for Canadian citizens. It's for corporations, regardless of national origin. Legislation that allows the import of foreign workers at discount putting downward pressure on Canadian wages -> pro corporations at the expense of citizens. Legislation that takes away environmental oversight -> pro corporations at the expense of citizens. Legislation that cripples scientific review ->pro corporations. Legislation that reduces corporate taxes ->pro corporations. Legislation that reduces OAS -> doesn't help citizens. Legislation that allows internet spying without warrant -> loss of citizen privacy, can be used (as shown repeatedly and Vic Toews didn't even know) for unscrupulous monitoring ... potentially for MPAA. Legislation that destroys digital rights of citizens so they can't transfer licenses or backup material they purchased ->pro corporations at the expense of citizens. That's just under Harper. Over the last few decades, our government has been increasingly abused for corporate gain at the expense of citizens, regardless of who is in power... I tire of it. The corporatocracy/wealthy elite are doing the best they can to misinform the public as to the true nature of wealth division using the media that the own to do so. Pro union news? No way. Unions are the last piece of hope that citizens have at maintaining some power in over their government... because unions have money to wage a public relations war informing the public of worker interests. Unions are what created the middle class, and they are being whittled away. This video talks about information from polling Americans (both Democrat and Republican alike). It's interesting to see their ideal, what they think our current distribution is, and the reality. I'm only adding it as a piece of interest. -
SUN NEWS should be made more accessible

I agree to help fund them more. But if they ever decry public funding initiatives, I'd like to fine them double back for being a bunch of hypocrites. Not only that, It provides a good laugh for sane people. or depression if you think people actually watch it for information... "Let's bully this person to try to make them look stupid." "Let's use junk science to support corporate interests" "Let's use this oil executive to talk about how oil is environmentally friendly" Really, they should get a channel number right beside the comedy network and only come with the similar premium package. -

I just want to point out that ALL MONEY is money that technically doesn't exist, and there will NEVER be enough money in the world to pay the debt that our current ponzi scheme has created. The right wing politics are simply trying to push the blame on entitlement, rather than the reality of our system. U.S. Example. U.S. Federal Reserve prints (Digitally Adds) new money out of thin air and "buys" Bonds from U.S. Government. What's wrong with this picture? U.S. FR creates 10 Billion U.S. Government sells $10 Billion in Bonds to FR. ... Bonds that require INTEREST PAYMENTS. $10 Billion principal can't even repay $10 Billion + $1 in interest.... let alone $10 Billion + Millions. This system was made to crash... the money movers are playing the blame game now. This is a ponzi scheme.... without infinite growth to cover ever increasing debt payments.... it will collapse. -
You speak as though this corruption is unique to the public sector. I'm not trying to downplay this act however; Let us not forget the countless examples of private sector rigging the system to ensure profit and continued operation. For instance, the example given by Michael Moore where they did not send kids home from a youth detention centre to keep making money off of holding them... The PRIVATIZED centre... keeping teens ready to go back, to make another buck. Don't even get me started about the bank bailouts...

Marc Garneau quitting race

You just have to go to the National Post or The Sun and read the rhetoric. The think tanks behind the conservatives are concerned, maybe not scared but, definitely concerned. -

I'm saying that the Conservatives air negative ads/push editorials in massive quantities to purposefully misinform the public, all the time. That is what they are good at, character assassination of ideas and people that don't fit their ideology. From the viewpoint of the opposition, it is better to have a charismatic leader who can take a frontal blow to their negative, underhanded campaign to misinform the public... The Cons have been successful at misinforming sheeple... From convincing them that overreaching laws to take away consumer freedoms are good, to convincing conservative followers that downward pressure on middle income earners during huge profits and wage increases for the wealthy is a good idea. If keeping one's hand hidden is required to weather the storm, then so be it. Let's be clear here too. The Conservatives under Harper purposefully didn't release full campaign information until after debates... so that here was nothing to attack them for while they slandered the ideas of all of the other parties. All I am saying is that, maybe the Liberals are taking a page from the underhanded Conservative playbook... -

He's handsome, young and charismatic. Isn't that all you need? Because, that is what you need to defeat the millions and millions the conservatives will be spending trying to suggestively slander him. At this point, his politics are largely irrelevant, given how the cons successfully assassinate the character of people with decent ideas.
