Ontario Budget 2014 -- Election
MiddleClassCentrist replied to Boges's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
Catholic schools actively participate in immoral behaviour by not providing programs for special needs and giving up on behavioural students rather than help them. They get sent to the public boards thereby artificially improving the segregated system score, while lowering the public score. Ever wonder why so many communities have half empty schools where millions of dollars went into building a new Catholic school in the last 10 years? Wasted money because the Catholics demand building new schools where public schools already exist. The result is Catholic schools wasting tax payer money to build luxurious schools with public money so that the public schools can sit half empty... Do we really need twice the bureaucracy in education? People who don't actively contribute to education but make up a bunch of policies at the board office? Cutting them in half would have 0 impact on the quality of education. Segregation wasn't okay when it was based on race. It's still not okay when it's based on religion. -

Although, they do perform better when with peers with similar needs. They feel less under the microscope and more able to be themselves when everyone in the room has the same issue. That being said, some level of integration is good. But, the current climate is integration at all costs. We have students with ASD (and likely many other issues like ODD, IED, Sociopathy, etc where the parents refuse to accept as a diagnosis because they sound bad) who have broken staff arms, regularly take classrooms hostage with their screaming, cussing and threatening behaviour because the system lets them act that way. Some of them do it on purpose but the label ASD protects them from any consequences. If they are not a threat to the well being of other students, they full integration is OK. As soon as safety is compromised, they need to be in a more therapeutic environment. -

Wait... where exactly do kids learn that stuff in the curriculum? The only thing I remember were religious folk being up in arms because the curriculum was going to be updated to a modern level of tolerance to mention things like "non-traditional couples". Next thing you know, because these religious and intolerant folk hate homosexuals and non-traditional people, they claim that anal sex is being promoted because it mentions same sex male relationships. -
To be fair, many feminists also spend a good deal of time on "low importance" issues like reframing school dress codes as "slut shaming" instead of professional dress habits and rationalizing sexist stereotypes and sexist ideas of men based on feminist blogs/literature. Note: I said "many" and not "all" or "most". I think the MRA has caught on to the false stereotyping and is responding irrationally in many contexts because they are realizing that they have a right to be offended and are using the fire from becoming offended to react hotly back instead of using it productively. That being said, when I was reading about the screening being stopped it was because of too many false positives that lead to surgery which left males incontinent for the rest of their life and that most men who die with prostate cancer, do not die with prostate cancer as a cause of death... but old age. I can't remember whether my information is good or not, I believe that it was second hand. I'll have a browse through some of the links in the thread.

I've been predicting PC minority since the start of this election because I can't believe that people would stick with the Liberals after their troubles... It looks like the polls are still showing that. I don't feel like any of the parties are really making an impact either way. -

http://www.statcan.gc.ca/daily-quotidien/121207/t121207a003-eng.htm In March 2014, Ontario's Unemployment Rate was 7.4% with 547 400 Ontarians unemployed. If Hudak truly creates a MILLION jobs, we'll have 452 600 to spare. Sorry, 352 000 to spare after laying off 100 000 public sector workers. 352 000! That's the entire population of London, ON. Is this that "new math" that I've been hearing about? -

To be fair, the Teacher Pension plan had a MASSIVE surplus before and the law dictated that they were unable to maintain a surplus status... -

So we'll have no engineers, no technology programs, no construction, no autoshop, no computer engineering... We still have to pay people with expertise who have in demand skills a good sum. At least if you want more than basket weaving as a practical course. -

Well, Ontario teachers pay 13% of their salary into their pension... and people hate them for it. Maybe if people were forced to save some money for retirement instead of blowing it luxuries they'd have less to hate teachers for? Granted, the OTPP is a private investment firm that makes a crapload of cash but, maybe Ontario should try that model? -

More importantly we should be asking this question: Why is it that dime a dozen art, history, phys. ed, teachers get paid the same computer engineering, programming, physics, or teachers with engineering background? The dime a dozen degrees just aren't worth 80-90k/year. A Phys. Ed. teacher would likely be making somewhere between 30-60k max as a personal trainer... -

It's common knowledge too... Canadian corporations have been sitting on so much money... SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH MONEY and doing nothing with it. Even Jim Flaherty told corporations that they need to start investing... How is having them pay 30% fewer taxes when they already have stockpiles of cash going to create jobs? IT WON'T. -

I think she was relying on Hudak's unpopularity at the time, also put together with Harpers current unpopularity. I don't think it was desperate, it was a good strategy. Why was Harper commenting to sway provincial policy. It's not his place. Harper could have said nothing and remained out of it, Wynne was responding to Harper. -
Is Tipping A Broken Business Model
MiddleClassCentrist replied to WestCoastRunner's topic in Business and Economy
That's actually not true. It's been shown time and time again that wait staff EXPECT tips. Service at locations without tipping is the same as service with tipping. If a costumer doesn't tip, the waitstaff just blame the customer for being cheap and don't reflect on their own performance. -

Because they have an unlimited supply of arts, history, phys ed, english and other degrees of low science technlology engineering and mathematics. My big question in this deficit situation is not whether they should have jobs but, Why are dime a dozen arts degree, history degree, or phys ed degree holder's worth the same as a teacher with engineering and work experience, computer engineering, physics, masters of business.... It boggles my mind. Where would else would a teacher with arts, history, or physic commonly clear 70, or even 80k a year after 6 years? -

I understand existing companies would benefit a little but the largest chunk would be to big business. The largest potential increase of jobs in today's economy comes from new company creation. An established company might need to hire one or two people with a $100,000 investment. A brand new company would need to hire their entire staff with a $100,000 investment. I believe in free-enterprise but, my conservative mind is from the bottom up. Keeping the lawn green is less about the leaves on top and more about the roots underneath. If Hudak came out with that slogan, he'd sail to victory IMO. Voters are already skeptical of big business. Mostly because our big business governments haven't been fertilizing the roots as well as they should be. I hope someone in the PC's takes this ideal to heart... Ontario would have a brighter future. -

Hudak cutting corporate taxes by 30% is the absolute dumbest strategy I have every heard! It's already been cut, and cut, and cut. It hasn't helped. Has he not read the news? Corporations are swimming in excess cash and doing NOTHING with it. When the heck are we going to get a conservative that understands how to build a frickin economy. You don't build an economy with big business... you can only maintain one with big business. To truly generate economic activity you need to continually INVEST in new small to medium entrepreneurs and innovators. Take the amount he'd save corps by cutting corporate taxes by 30% and give it to bright Ontarians with ideas to change the world. -
BC Teachers Getting Screwed...Again
MiddleClassCentrist replied to socialist's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
I take issue with "many of them will likely be retired for more years than they actually worked" Considering they probably started working in the work force around 18 and the majority work till around 58-60. I don't think so. If you want to cherry pick joining teaching later. Yeah, sure, someone can start teaching in their late 30's and retire early with a reduced pension and end up being a pensioner longer than they worked as a teacher... The correct word usage is "a few will be retired for more years than they actually worked" -

Ontario does that. Principals aren't part of it. Anyone can put together a strong show for a few day review. Who is going to pay these new consultants? -
Climate scientists keep getting it wrong
MiddleClassCentrist replied to jacee's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
As recently as the Sarah Palin days, it was 50/50, meanwhile a paltry 90% of scientists were convinced at that time. What is the figure now? (I'll just google it, don't bother looking heheh) As long as corporate propaganda organizations like Fox & Sun "News" are allowed to spread filth, we are at significant risk to eliminating ourselves because our reaction time is years upon years slower. -

Not a conspiracy theory, they've traced the funding to "grassroots" movements on multiple occasions back to being entirely funded by big oil. The promotion of hydrogen instead of electric cars, for instance. Where are my fricken' hydrogen cars? Here's a pretty recent example... http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/dark-money-funds-climate-change-denial-effort/ Or is SCIENTIFIC American also in on this heist? Because it relates to science, and scientists are clearly running the world. -

I read through this thread. I often don't because it is senseless to argue with those who purposefully use bad data and vague generalities to shut down any good discussion... which is what I've found MLW be mostly composed of at times. Some people still believe there is some bizarre conspiracy of 95%+ of qualified scientists world wide constructing peer review science... to protect their jobs... Meanwhile the proven billions that the oil industry and wealthy elite are spending on misinformation to protect their trillions are righteous and their information is good. Sometimes I question whether humanity deserves to live, being that its political leaders and ignorant masses can be persuaded with rhetoric and idiotic claims perpetuated by special interest corporate funded initiatives and right wing media. -
http://arstechnica.com/science/2013/12/billion-dollar-climate-denial-network-exposed/ Strange how conservative posters on MLW have also been so blindly in support of bad science funded by corporate dollars. On one hand, we have climate change researched by scientists. On the other hand we have climate change deniers being pushed by billions of dollars donated from corporations and ultra wealthy conservatives into conservative think tanks. ... And for some reason... conservative partisans choose to support the people with the most to lose from changing business practices...
