Should we shut down Canada's nuclear reactors?
GWiz replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Your guess is as good as mine as to what should be done with Nuclear Reactors, they're man-made, ergo things can/will go wrong... Canada CAN'T shut down it's Nuclear Reactors, the public wouldn't stand for it, so that's NOT an option unless Canada changes it's entire electrical infrastructure, and even then the US would have to do the same, which they won't, to make a difference... Incidentally, we're talking 50-100 years into the future, not retroactively when it comes to Canada's Nuclear energy... -
Why did Harper even mention it then? Nothing changed regarding the FUTURE purchase of the F-35 for Canada or any other purchaser... I hope you're BETTING on it... I'm not... What has the TD bank got to do with anything? I'm actually BETTING the other way, a second, deeper recession, that will actually be felt by Canada unlike the last one... That's when we'll really see things get "shook up" like a Japanese earthquake... While you're at, mind telling us how, on what, when, where and why your Harper Regime spent some $76 BILLION of our money, I can't get the accounting for it anywhere, maybe YOU can...

Yep, dwindling base because, just like Obama, thay aren't seeing people stand up and be counted and instead try to compromise with the uncompromisable... Both Obama and Ignatieff are bad at reading the "tea leaves", which is to compromise rather than fight for what you believe in... That's my motto, that's what I do... Try it, you'll see how quickly people join you... But NO, they watch polls which are only as good as the question asked, and in the many polls I've taken, not one asked the right questions... In the US it's (wrongly) appeasing a party of NO and caving in on the public option, which is costing the US over a trillion dollars now thanks to Republicants and Dem appeasers, and on the tax cuts to the people earning over $250,000.00 for the same reason... That's $1.8 Trillion dollars WASTED within the last year by Republicans on behalf of BIG BUSINESS... In Canada it's as simple as letting Harper get the last (2009) budget passed without the Liberals forcing an election (I think the Liberals should NEVER "make a CON Government work"), if it had been me I'd have voted the Harper Regime out as soon as I heard the word "deficit"... BUT, I have the smarts not to need to run one, not sure if the current bunch of Liberals could have... Then there's the "media", that's a whole story in itself, in both our countries... If they let this budget pass even I won't be voting Liberal... I'll be revolting in the streets...

Actually there's almost a good point there... Except of course Ignatieff didn't "come back" to be the leader of the Liberal Party... He was elected by a bunch of stupid Liberals to replace Dion because he spoke a lot better english than Dion and little more reason than that... Ignatieff is just about the worst "polititian" I've ever seen, so "politics" is not what I see as having much to do with Ignatieff... Where-as thinking he could help Canada and Canadians become better would be behind Ignatieff's motivation... Sadly neither being all-political nor non-political works very well... Which is why Ignatieff is a political if not personal failure as leader of the Liberals... He never understood what it takes to be a leader... It doesn't appear to be in him...
-
Or NOT... I know he'd save a minimum of $20 BILLION in deficit spending by reopening the Jet Fighter contract to competition... That's just for starters... Oh, then there's those "Corporate Tax Cuts", he'd reverse and cancel those too... Hell, I'm even for raising taxes on people above a certain income level, say over $250,000 NET, in order to get back into a balanced budget scenario... You? Harper can do no wrong and the Liberals can do nothing right, that all you got? So all in all your statement adds up to a whole lot of BS...

If the final death toll comes in under 100,000 I'll be greatly surprised... But if it does it will mean that Japan did an EXTRAORDINARY job in preparing for a disaster like this that NO country on earth could have done better preparing for such a TRIPLE (2 natural 1 manmade) disaster... People here keep forgetting Japan is one of the most densely populated countries in the world... There were MILLIONS of people living in the area most affected by the Earthquake/Tsunami double hit, with very little TIME to prepare for the second (Tsunami) hit... - Tsunamis race across the sea at up to 500 miles (805 kilometers) an hour—about as fast as a jet airplane. At that pace they can cross the entire expanse of the Pacific Ocean in less than a day. And their long wavelengths mean they lose very little energy along the way. -

I don't give anyone a break, especially not a CON, I classify Rae in the same category as Dion and Ignatieff, has beens and never weres... Baggage handlers at best... Naaa, I'm talking the "young guns" (some not that young but still NEW blood) in the Liberal party like - Trudeau, LeBlanc, Garneau, McGuinty, Dryden, Coady, Cromby, Duncan, Kennedy, Bennett, and that list goes on and on deep within the Liberal party... "Any fact facing us is not as important as our attitude toward it, for that determines our success or failure." - Norman Vincent Peale

Never been on a fence... Only way for me to "go over to the other side" would be through an open gate... But everytime I find a gate it's not only locked but a guy with a big gun on the other side tells me to "keep out"... Walking along a fence that's in the MIDDLE of the field keeps me fit and trim though... "Success occurs when opportunity meets preperation."

Not to disagree with you, and I basically don't, but don't underestimate Harper, he KNOWS how a divided front hurts a "side" which is todays "Conservative Party", which bears little resemblance to say the Clark led PCs if you know what I mean... There is far too great a divide between the NDP and Liberals for any form of "joining" them, and you are absolutely right in saying that they can hurt their election chances enough without any outside interference... I'm saying that because of it Harper reaps the benefit and will as long as the NDP keeps attacking the Liberals for the sake of a few extra seats beyond their "hardcore" base... That's just a simple fact and nothing more... "Once you have accepted yourself, it's so much easier to accept other people and their point of view."
-
90% of Canadians disagree with you, including many, many, TRUE "conservatives"... Self agrandizing advertising at tax payer expense for a no longer existing program is "OK" with you? Why? Are you saying the "left" was RIGHT in getting the Harper Regime to spend money that resulted in a $56 BILLION record deficite? (I was personally totally against ANY stimulous that didn't DIRECTLY result in saving jobs.) What kind of "conservative" are you? I'm a fiscally responsible "conservative" Liberal, which is a hell of a lot more "conservative" than anything that the Harper Regime is doing or has done in these NON-resessionary (in Canada) TIMES... "You cannot consistantly perform in a manner which is inconsistant with the way you see yourself." - Dr. Joyce Brothers
-
From my point of view the entire Harper "strategy" is screw the "left" by a method of divide and conquer (NDP vs Liberals) which works out perfectly because the NDP fall for it every TIME... Harper is FAR RIGHT to the point of extremism... Harper is Canada's Scott Walker one could even say... Harper is very anti-union and pro Corporations, like Walker in Wisconsin, by keeping the NDP busy fighting the Liberals, he's slowly but surely undermining the strength of unionism in Canada... Credit where credit is due, Harper's strategy is working better now than ever, 2000 posts on the Walker/Wisconsin thread is ample proof it's working here on MLW and the way the "media" up-plays Layton and the NDP in the news over Ignatieff and the Liberals proves it in "general public" terms... "Some people are so heavenly minded they're no earthly good."

Harper's election to lose? He's trying hard...
GWiz replied to GWiz's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Hmmm, no takers? Scared what you may find? -
If one were to actually compare PARTIES instead of leaders, which is how it should be, the Liberals are winners hands down... The Liberal "bench strength" compared to the "screw-up" bench of the CONS is staggering and the RIGHT LEANING "media" knows it which is why the entire "media" focus is on the leaders where the Liberals are the weakest... One stupid remark by Ignatieff, which wasn't nearly as "bad" as the "media" made it out to be if one actually reads it, trumps a dozen CON scandals, how sad is that in a "parliamentary democracy" like Canada's? There's a lot of "I can't vote Liberal now because of Ignatieff and what he says" is nothing but a bunch of hooey... Anyone "voting" on the basis of a single issue one doesn't like are simply, typical, uninformed, and basically stupid... Canadians will get the Government they deserve regardless of the outcome of the next election... If you LIKE huge deficit spending with little to nothing to show for it vote "conservative"... If you want to vote as a "protest" and throw away your vote vote NDP... If you want a better way forward for the future of Canada hold your nose like I do and vote Liberal... "The best of bad options is still a bad option and still the best option." - GWiz
-
When a Government runs up a record $56 BILLION deficite that money had to be spent somewhere... If Canadians are to stupid to care and re-elect Harper and Co. Canadians will get much, much more of this, BUT they'll get exactly what Canadians deserve... Sad but true... "Stupid is as stupid does"... Don't be stupid...

Should we shut down Canada's nuclear reactors?
GWiz replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
No issue is that "black and white"... This issue less so than most... Just like the next Canadian election will have no good choices, so it is with something like Nuclear Energy... It is what it is... Whatever "mankind" builds nature can destroy... Nothing NEW about that... There are also almost always better options/choices, but mankinds love for money trumphs most better options/choices every TIME... So - "The best of bad options is still a bad option and the best option." - GWiz -

"Man's inhumanity to his fellow man", which has been evident since "humanity" became a species of animal, is a surprise to people here on MLW? Give me a break! -

Today in the NEWS: RCMP asked to probe Conservative aide Harper government's ad buy costs taxpayers $26M also - To those who think that Mr. Ignatieff wants to support paying for "arenas" for professional sports, why don't you take the time to read what he REALLY said on the subject? I can't find anything he said about building an arena for a professional hockey team, but he did say that he was open to the idea of building public centers that would be used as cultural centers also, not just in Quebec, but anywhere in Canada. Don't just read the headlines and take them as some wierd truth. Some headlines don't have anything resembling the story content. Wanna guess which "news item" tops the "media"? -

Hey, there's still something lingering in some Japanese minds too... Something considerably WORSE than anything the Japanese did to Americans... It's one thing doing things to people with uniforms on and guns to fight back with... It's something else to "take out" CIVILIAN moms walking their kids home from school by the thousands I'm thinking... TWICE even... Now that's what I call "teaching a lesson" not soon forgotten... KABOOM! KABOOM! Lesson given... Lesson learned... -
I agree completely... If Harper isn't stopped we'll be in the same shape we were in post Harper's mentor lyin' Brian MORONey, maybe EVEN WORSE...
-
Ummm, would you have a LINK to what Ignatieff actually said IN CONTEXT? by edit> http://www.nationalpost.com/news/Punish+Conservatives+voting+Liberal+Ignatieff+Quebec/4438026/story.html Better, but still no actual speech transcript... Maybe it's because of things like this, eh > http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/story/2011/03/05/pol-pmo-ignatieff.html?ref=rss

Yeah, wrong thread, had 2 open, was asking about Iggy arena thingy, my bad...
-
That's completely FALSE... A LIE even... What's the matter, you don't know a damn thing about "AdScam" or the "Sponsorship Scandal" do you? You just liked the sound of it because it involved "Liberals"... Now that it's your party doing THE SAME THING in spades you don't seem to like it quite as much... No wonder you're all upset about it...
