Canadian vs. US Attitudes on Climate Change
GWiz replied to Michael Hardner's topic in Health, Science and Technology
I'm not a proponent of coal, period, but so called "clean" coal is better than dirty coal I suppose... Since the US with it's much smaller population and better technologies can't seem to do without coal, one must assume that China, all things considered, certainly can't... Since that's the case I'm rather gratified that China is making a "best effort" to mitigate it's needs for coal as a prime energy source... You may find this article interesting... China Relying on Natural Gas to Support Development - Today, few countries are as honest about their energy present and future as China. While American pundits and politicians have been praising China’s solar and wind forays, Han Xiaoping, an energy expert from the China Energy Net, said that “the so-called ‘new energy’ such as wind power and solar energy can never support China’s civilization process. In the next 100 years, natural gas will be the basic energy to support China’s development.” Gas use is soaring in China. Starting from 865 Bcf in 2000, it increased by almost four-fold to 3.18 Tcf in 2009, and in a rapidly increasing energy consumption from all sources, gas’s share of primary energy went from 2% to 4%. By 2020, gas consumption will likely exceed 10.6 Tcf, and provide about 10% of primary energy consumption. This natural gas increase, outpacing the already torrid rate of total energy increase, will last at least until 2030. - And this - China’s Nuclear Industry - Accurate or not, statistics don't always tell the whole story, or even the most important part. China's nuclear industry is a good example. In 2001, the nuclear capacity for the most heavily populated country on Earth was slightly less than that of Finland. Nevertheless, the international nuclear industry is 'beating a path' to China's open door. Asia is a growth market for nuclear power. Perhaps, no other nuclear industry is as difficult to write about as that of China. The previous China feature attempted to avoid superlatives as much as possible in an effort to maintain neutrality. Nevertheless, one superlative and seemingly exorbitant prediction came true and is still coming true. The article quoted a statement from a 1998 report: “no country in Asia (or anywhere else on the planet) is expected to grow as fast as China.” Within a few years, China’s nuclear market has expanded at such a rapid rate that this “bold statement” of the time is one of the few that has not been rendered obsolete. From 1996 to the end of 2003, not one company has brought a single new reactor on line in the United States, nor cleared a patch of ground to begin building, nor applied for a license to start construction. Since January 2002, China has brought 6 on line in China, plus one reactor in Pakistan. The question is no longer: can China’s nuclear industry maintain its current growth rate? The question now being asked is, can China accelerate that growth rate to meet the even more ambitious pace of its new energy plan? - -
OK, fair ball, kinda strange though that all there is this - http://www.suntvnews.ca/ "Coming soon?" That's it? Supposedly "on air" at the end of March and that's it? Care to clarify? This is, by date, the latest info I can find outside the Globe and Mail article on SunTVNews... 680News staff Nov 26, 2010 19:30:48 PM The CRTC gave the channel a category 2 competitive license. As a result, cable and satellite providers have a choice on whether or not to carry the network. _____________________________________________________________________________ Ok Shady, in fairness to you, forget all that... If you can provide me, this forum, and thread with something more current and credible to back-up your point of view about all this please do so... Then everyone here can come to their own conclusions about something call SunTVNews and what it is and what it isn't... Is that fair enough?

Where did I say it was? All I said was that it couldn't operate as "Fox News North" and I stand by that... Since you said you have no knowledge about Fox News, how can you state that what I said is wrong? Hmmm? Blowing smoke doesn't cut it, as I said, learn to read what's there not what you want to be there... http://suntv.canoe.ca/ Have a look, it ain't no "Fox News", not even close, therefore in effect, no "Fox News North" will ever exist... Canadian vs. US Attitudes on Climate Change

Well, I'd say you are both right and wrong... On a per capita basis the US still easily holds the title, on a historical basis the US is a long way from being beaten out by China too... You are right on a technical basis but it is only in this NEW century that China is placed ahead of the US as the worlds biggest polluter... Considering the very proactive approach to pollution China has adopted their "lead" of a couple of percentage points in polluting may not last... Of course China's rapid growth of their "middle class" and huge population may keep them in the lead... You are WRONG when it comes to India with India still lagging far behind China and the US (less than 6% of world pollution vs 20% range for US and China)... As for "restrictions"; I've already stated the difference... But I'm surprised that the US wants to be led rather than lead in the fight AGAINST pollution... Oh well, it is what it is... Now THAT I can agree with... STOP the TAX CUTS; PERIOD! Canada can't afford them... Hmmmm, I'm sounding like a Liberal now... "Whether you think you can or think you can't - you are right."

Good'un...

A good read indeed, but based on the US model, which is where the Huffington commentary comes in... Canada has SAFEGUARDS in place, which weren't changed, to prevent FLAGRANT FALSE PROPAGANDA, such as is the (US) Fox "News" model which is STRICTLY a propaganda for profit model of FALSE and MISLEADING "news" with a designed purpose... On the "left", in the US, there is MSNBC, but to a far lesser degree than the "extreme bias" on the "FAR right" that Fox "News" typifies... We will have to wait and see what "format" Sun-TV - being deemed "Fox News North" - will, or more importantly, be able, to adopt in living up to that designation... IMHO Sun-TV will fail, IF it gets off the ground, simply because it will not be able to cater to a large enough demographic in Canada being a "right leaning" news station little different than the CTV news channel already is... A quite common practice among those that receive those "tax cuts"... Generally speaking it's added to the Corporations' "profitability" margins and distributed in the form of dividends, increased share prices, and huge bonuses to those directly responsible for said rise in "profitability"... IF any jobs are created they are usually NOT in Canada (or US if US Corps) but rather in cheap labour countries... Having an actual NEGATIVE EFFECT on jobs rather than said "job creation"... The "public side" is really not much different than the "private side" when it comes to labour practices in that entity... The BIG DIFFERENCE is found at the top management level where the CEO, you me and the rest of the general public, doesn't do their job properly by letting the CFO, the PM, and department vice-presidents, ministers, run the company without us, the CEO, providing adequate direction... When the CEO of any entity fails in performing their duties properly by relying solely on the underlings to run the company bad financial results are bound to be the consequence... WE, the CEO, are the responsible party and no one else... WE hire the CFO and the rest of senior management... "If you learn from a defeat, you haven't really lost."

I guess it all boils down to where these people worship... Praying to the idol of the almighty dollar (insert currency of choice) will have these kinds of effects on the rationality of the human psychy I suppose... The strange and worrisome aspect of the phenomena is when humans without the "walking around money" you describe join those that do without knowing, nor understanding, the ultimate consequences of their actions... Oh well, things will be as as they will be, humanity is incapable of changing it's destructive ways and is therefore doomed to be instrumental in it's own demise... Enjoy the ride my friend, it will be interesting to watch if nothing else... "You cannot tailor-make the situations in life, but you can tailor-make the attitudes to fit those situations."
-
THAT was the POINT I was making... You know, truth be told, I've never seen a single job created by a "tax cut", have you?
-
FYI - Never said a thing about licensing, learn to read... However, meeting and maintaining CRTC criteria is germain to being able to broadcast in the 'Fox News North" style of "news"... Without which SunTV becomes a NOTHING "news station" no different than the CBC or CTV news networks, only a lot less watched, meaning a lot less advertising, meaning they ain't gonna be around for long, if at all... Since you answered my question clearly stating that YOU have no credibility what-so-ever I won't lower myself to trying to educate you any further... "It's your attitude and not your aptitude that determines your altitude." Oh btw, you have it WRONG, and the Globe and Mail, and The Huffington Post, and I, have it right... Just thought you might want to know...
-
You have my sympathy, seriously, I thought there were some "fruitcakes" on the Hannity for'em, and there are for sure, but they at least had some strange convoluted basis for how they where, here there's just NOTHING... It's like something in the water turned their brains to grapefruit jelly... And there's so many of them relatively speaking...

Got a bad cold, all stuffed up, thought this place would help to put me to sleep, it's working...

It's quite amazing to me the PATIENCE people on here have with certain people that are totally clueless about the real world they live in... How you do it is honestly beyond anything I could ever do... Maybe it's my ALIEN blood, but over 1450 posts on this thread to accomplish nothing is truly unbelievable... Well now, why don't you tell me? "People more attention pay to what you do than what you say." Incidentally, do YOU believe that the "fair and unbiased news" slogan Fox News uses is an accurate description of what Fox News does/broadcasts? Oh, btw, where did you get your journalism accreditation? I know where I got mine...
-
So the Globe and Mail and the CRTC are wrong and you are right, that about it? Does that mean SunTV will be operating without CRTC approval, be licenced as a comedy channel, what? Could you provide some back-up other than your say so? Not that I care, I don't watch Fox News South and I wouldn't watch a fifth rate Fox News North either, sicko opinion isn't NEWS and the Rush/Hannity/Beck crapers are for the previously brainwashed to stomach... just sayin'
-
Hmmm, I'm no NDPer, far from it, BUT, if it's so easy why don't the FEDS try it, I wouldn't mind?
-
Nice but not nicer... I've got property in Florida, WAAAY too hot for me in summer in the tropics... Give me my boat, friends and/or family, a nice day on a Manitoba/NW Ont. lake anyday, AND it's a whole lot CHEAPER than what's on that video... PLUS less chance of being "hijacked" (like this thread) or SHOT because of GUN CONTROLS...
-
I think you're wrong... Which provinces? Could you run through them please... West to east preferably... Or post the link... Manitoba yes (NDP on the way out - MB Hydro Lines issue, fed. Cons could lose 2-3 in Wpg. if NDP don't kill Libs off in close races south and west like before), but I'm not sure that applies to Saskatchewan (probably but fed. potash issue may hurt them federally), BC (HST issue Harper forced open races), Ontario (HST issue Harper forced open races), certainly not Quebec, Maritimes (spotty at best)... just sayin'

Indeed it is...

Nope, just prefer fishing to hunting... But I see YOU do CARE after all... (slow down G, you got another nibble)
