  1. His shortcomings weren't only personal. If we want to throw accolades upon him, we should also examine his controversial policies like the treatment of the chinese and aboriginals. I don't believe there is a smear campaign, just an honest look at his legacy.
  2. An 'opinion column' is just that, an 'opinion'. They aren't normally balanced or present an array of opinions. If they were unbiased, they wouldn't be opinions of the writer.
  3. If Waldo was banned/sent to the cooler, then it is a dam shame and a poor reflection on this forum. Especially when we have folks like Shady saying 'does that guy ever learn' or socialist saying 'hopefully he comes back with better understanding'.

Since he sent me a private message telling me to go f*** off, I have little sympathy for him.

I've noticed there hasn't been any decent threads on environment- especially climate change issues of late. Now I know why. I'll have to fill in for him while he's gone.

It's probably because it's not that exciting of a topic. Humans are resourceful. We'll find a way to repair any damage if necessary.

  4. Indeed! Before certain posters disparage the entire muslim population, consider that the Muslim population is the second largest population in the world with roughly 1.8 billion people, with 50 per cent below the age of 25. A new generation of the muslim population include women who maintain Islamic traditions such as wearing headscarves but also have professional careers and hold leadership roles alongside men. Much of the younger generation of Muslim Americans, believes that Islam, properly interpreted, sanctions equality and pluralism. Muslim women in their 20s and 30s are embracing stylish and colourful headscarfs, creating startup companies to address these fashion issues and even posting selfies on facebook, instagram, youtube etc. In the past, this would have been highly condemned as catering to their egos. In fact, these young women are grateful that the older muslim generation are not proficient with social media. A 2011 Pew Research Center study found that Muslims don't differ much from the general US population. (I couldn't find Canadian stats): 55 percent of Muslims are married, as is 54 percent of the general US population. 26 percent have a college degree, as do 28 percent of their fellow Americans. 20 percent, like 17 percent of all Americans, are self-employed or own small businesses. 90 percent of Muslims agree that women should be able to work outside the home 68 percent feel gender makes no difference in political leaders (versus 97 percent and 72 percent in the US generally). Weekly mosque attendance (47 percent) is comparable to Christian church attendance (45 percent), and a majority of Muslims (63 percent) and Christians (64 percent) see no conflict between being devout and living in modern society. This new generation of muslims appear to me to be 'moderate'. Perhaps posters on this forum should become social media savvy themselves just to see what these dangerous and suspicious muslims are up to. http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Society/2014/0216/Islam-the-American-way http://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/17/fashion/muslim-women-hijab-style-traditional-garment-fashion.html?_r=0
  5. I'm not being politically correct nor or others weighing in on this. That is such an easy way out to say that 'we are being politically correct'. We are standing up for the rights of these women and working to draw attention to such destructive thinking. And quite frankly, I'm done with debating this issue.
  6. Yes, and that was an anomaly. Normally, the west doesn't cover this type of outrage. Maybe things are starting to change. Let's hope so.
  7. Right, so we should all listen to you and other posters here, and disregard this whole issue. Because, apparently, most people weighing in on this issue are totally misled and do not 'get' the humour and harmless postings of these 4th year university students. Right, I get it now. Let's put these targeted women back in the classrooms with their male colleagues who threatened to chlorofoam and rape them. And of course, let's let these very same men, graduate and treat young women with dental procedures after chloroforming them. I get it now. Why is it that the majority of people who have weighed in on this issue (I mean outside of this forum) disagree with you and yet, these very same people 'don't seem to understand what it is'. Do you and other posters on this thread know more then everyone else?
  8. No, it's because they weren't white. The same goes for teachers and students who are massacred for simply choosing to attend school to learn and teach. They are not white. So, no coverage.
  9. What is not to be believed? I don't understand this statement? The FB posts have been documented and verified. Are you suggesting that these posts were posted by others?
  10. I don't recall calling men stupid. I did say that we have a long way to go in educating men as to the barriers that women face in the workforce. Something to that effect anyway.
  11. I suspect that social media is hitting a lot of organizations out of left field and they better grab it and deal with it.
  12. You are a man, you have no right to judge what a woman experiences when they are subjected to sexual harrassment on the job (especially if they are a single parent). There are many complexities and the fact you can't understand it means we have a long way to go to educate society on this issue.
  13. Again, you are associating these fb posts with rude statements when in fact they aren't. They are violent threats against their female colleagues. Why do you continue to deny this?
  14. A lot of women would prefer to earn a living.
  15. Can you offer anything original to this thread?
  16. I can't even begin to respond to this.
  17. The fb posts are about violent rape threats. What is it you don't get?
  18. This is exactly what folks are stating. Let's find out who these students are and let the public decide if they want their families to be treated by them. I think this could be a fair solution to the problem. Let's send out a message with our wallets.
  19. If an employee is being sexually harrassed at a workplace, the last thing they are concerned with is preventing other victims from being harrassed. You know absolutely nothing about sexual harrasment in the workplace and your response indicates so.
  20. Sure, all those women who are rape attack victims should just calm down and mark it up to 'freedom of speech/action'. Just the calm the heck down, you silly women! Do you even listen to yourself from time to time and contemplate your place in society.
  21. It is absolutely about justice. Here are some quotes from the medical profession: These “gentlemen” as they called themselves on the abhorrent Facebook page, were not boys, but men wrapping up a minimum of eight years of postsecondary study, and months away from earning the title of doctor, with all the public trust that entails. For this doctor, it was not about whether they would really “chloroform ” women, as they joked or have sex with women until they were “unconscious.” (They also voted on female peers worthy of “hate” sex.) The men involved demonstrated a lack of maturity and good judgment required for their profession. "These are not drunken 18-year-old frosh saying stupid things, with years left to mature into their chosen fields. This was not boyish locker-room hijinks, as the participants themselves described it. If these men had posted these comments mere months from now, their professional bodies would be dealing with them. (According to the Canadian dentistry code of ethics, adopted by provinces, a dentist shall represent himself or herself in a manner that contributes to the public’s trust and confidence in the profession.) When they chose a career with big responsibility, they accepted being held to a high standard of behaviour." So, let's stop pretending these are high school immature boys. In closing: Those men who were truly stupid enough to post sexist and abusive comments in a public forum, gave up their right to privacy, and, arguably, the right to be trusted with the tools of their trade. Feel sympathy, if you must, for years of hard work potentially thrown away. In the end, when the facts are laid out, we may be thankful they outed themselves before anyone had to call them “Dr.”
  22. Sure it is. After what happened in France apparently. Good grief.
  23. You missed the point completely, but I get that.
  24. What are you talking about? This thread is about dental students posting violent threats against their female colleagues. What on earth does this have to do with Muslim fanatics and free speech? Honestly, I think some of you posters are trolls.
