This sounds like a soundbite from some right-wing newscast. Do you have any cite to confirm that they are denigrated for acting white? -
Education Over Expulsion At Dalhousie
WestCoastRunner replied to Big Guy's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
Um, if I walked in on a conversation of my students talking about chlorofoming and raping their patients, they would be gone, expelled, on the spot! They abused their privilege of being in the dental program. They were a mere few months away from graduating and practicing on real life patients. Give me a freakin break! They blew it. There are plenty of students waiting to fill those spaces and probably better qualified. -
Who pays for post secondary education?
WestCoastRunner replied to John's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
It is absolutely not consistent nor is it sufficient. Let's consider single parent families. They not only need to come up with tuition but also COL including daycare fees. This is a huge challenge, especially when single parent families are expected to contribute to their living expenses. Not only do they have a tremendous load of caring for their children, but they also have to keep up with studies, exams, homework etc. And they are expected to work part-time to contribute to their studies. Now, let's consider the economic benefits to society if they received free education/daycare and graduated in a number of years to obtain a full-time well paid job. It's not rocket science to figure out the benefits to society if they are able to obtain an education, obtain full-time well paying employment and provide a great role model to their kids. The steps to achieve post secondary education are insurmountable to single parent families as it now stands. They need a break and they need to not engage in competition with rich kids who can rely on their parents to support their education. -
This would be a tough call to make on the behalf of a physician. Especially in the case of depression.

Who pays for post secondary education?
WestCoastRunner replied to John's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
It is not going over my head as much as you men like to insinuate that. It is about subsidized education for medical professionals. Dental care is just as much needed as care provided by physicians. Please do not condescend to my intellect. -

Who pays for post secondary education?

Let me set you straight buddy. I am not on an agenda for pet social programs. I am no social warrior and I am no enviro-techo nut that you have referred to me in the past. I am simply suggesting alternatives to the policies of the education programs that are heavily reliant on tax subsidies and yet provide no help to the disadvantaged in Canada. -
This thread is about 'assisted suicide' is it not? I am quite sure that a physician will not provide assistance to the suicide of a clinically diagnosed 'depressed' individual. There are highly successful treatments for individuals with depression.

Who pays for post secondary education?
WestCoastRunner replied to John's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
My posts deserve to be included in this thread as they relate to tax payer funded programs. Your post above is exactly my point. Dentists provide services which people need. And let's not pretend these services can be compared to engineering, lawyers, architects etc. Taxpayers are funding 2/3's of a dentist's training and these dentists are not held accountable to provide essential services to children of low income families, disabled people on low income etc. All I'm suggesting is that we need to perhaps look at some of these tax payer funded programs and look at the policies governing them. ' As far as my being a 'social warrior', I will just add that to my ever growing list of labels that are attached to me whenever someone disagrees with my posts. -

I have no problem with government subsidies, (after all, I took advantage of those subsidies myself) however, dentistry provides much needed medical services and as taxpayers we are funding 2/3 of the cost of the training. Should we not as a nation ensure that "Canadians who are poor, disabled, elderly or living in remote communities receive dental treatment" much like Physicians provide? I don't think this is a short sighted perspective. It is called 'thinking outside the box'. -
Who pays for post secondary education?

It's a problem when we are subsidizing their training and as mentioned above, while failing to provide essential dental treatment to Canadians who are poor, disabled, elderly or living in remote communities. The Canadian Institute for Health Information reported in November 2013 that, relative to the 34 countries of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, Canada performed “poorly” in insuring equitable access to dental care. -

Joan Rush, a former adjunct professor in the faculties of law and dentistry at the University of British Columbia has some interesting observations about the Dental education programs in Canada: "Canadians pay a lot for dentists to be trained. Tuition fees for dental school are shockingly expensive, but still represent less than a third of the real cost of training. Taxpayers make up the difference. It’s time that Canadian dental faculties ensure that their graduates are trained to be respectful and empathetic to each other and to all Canadians, so that dentistry can become the partner in health care that Canadians need it to be." She goes on to say that dentistry is a private business and dentists can charge whatever they want and can treat only those people who can afford it, and yet, we the taxpayers subsidize their training. "The result is a profession that does a great job providing cosmetic dentistry and Botox to wealthy Canadians while failing to provide essential dental treatment to Canadians who are poor, disabled, elderly or living in remote communities. The Canadian Institute for Health Information reported in November 2013 that, relative to the 34 countries of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, Canada performed “poorly” in insuring equitable access to dental care." Should tuition fees be raised for dental students and should they operate under the same policies as Physicians? -

You sound pretty pissed off to me because 'women' would dare to challenge you on this issue. I don't see any hate here towards men but what I do see is lack of respect towards women. -

Education Over Expulsion At Dalhousie

Back to the topic: A few facts of the dental profession and leadership in Canada: It remains a white male bastion. The deans of all ten faculties of dentistry in Canada are men Of the 18 directors of the Canadian Dental Association, only one is a woman. There are no people of colour on the CDA board Many dentists reacted angrily to a July 2013 online post in the Journal of the CDA calling for greater diversity in the leadership of the profession - One dentist argued that rather than worry about diversity, CDA leaders should limit the number of graduates to promote greater profitability for working dentists. A few updated facts about the facebook posts: "Dalhousie University is closing its public dental clinics until January to deal with the discovery of sexually violent Facebook posts by fourth-year male dentistry students. "The closing of the dental clinics is one of the many steps being taken so patients, students, faculty and staff are able to return to classes and clinics in a safe and supportive environment". A petition signed by 150 faculty is calling for an independent inquiry. Brian Leadbetter, the school's director of communications, said the school would launch a task force in January to look at sexism on campus. About 200 people marched in a Friday protest to demand that Dalhousie take stronger action against the students. A petition on Change.org calling for the students' expulsion has over 42,000 signatures. This issue is no longer about the female students mentioned in the posts.
