Illegal workers in U.S.
WestCoastRunner replied to WestCoastRunner's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Farmers have come out and said that they offer comparable wages. They are desperate for workers to pick their produce. I have provided cites for this. Can you provide cites otherwise? Why would I argue to keep wages low and working conditions poor. Seriously? What's in it for me? Do your research. -
No, it's about a journalist seeking stardom.

It has been shown that farmers do provide decent housing, wages, medical treatment etc. However, American workers do not want to do the work. Can you provide cites that these workers are not being provided access to all of these when given the opportunity to work for a reputable company? -
Seriously, we are reducing this story to a left vs right? Come on. Let's great real. This is about a high profile journalist seeking stardom. Has nothing to do with politics and has everything to do with celebrity status.

Public Schools Prepare Learners
WestCoastRunner replied to socialist's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
Not sure what a gay person growing up in a rural setting has to do with private vs public schooling. Although I do understand the struggles. I don't recall saying that I don't know what being gay in a rural setting means. My point was that when students are taught in a private school setting, they are taught in a 'like minded' environment. Not much room for expanding their mind to other demographics. -

Yea, I believe that children being educated in a multicultural environment has many advantages. Even if parents are bigots, I feel that children can overcome those beliefs given exposure to many ethnethicities. -

Big difference between private/public. Not sure what rural vs urban has to do with it. -

Not so much on tolerance. It is still about maintaining the 'sterotypical image'. You are fooling yourself if you believe this is true. -

Well, my kids have been friends with kids from the private schools and their sexuality is certainly private. Especially when their fathers are CEO's. -

Public schools introduce children to gay students, transgender and other ethnicities. These are demographics that would not likely be exposed to kids in a private school setting. If there were gays or transgender students in a private school, you can bet they are in the closet not only with the school but also with their parents. -

I think that tolerance is a huge aspect of 21st century education. Of course, we have the academics, the arts etc, but overcoming bigotery and having acceptance in today's society is just as important. -

Do public schools vs private schools teach the most important 21st century aspects of education? What are they? -
I am a bit late weighing in on this one, but why is it jaw dropping amazing? You didn't really explain that.

Socialist, you should probably provide some context to your post. I have taken the liberty of posting some facts from the article you linked to: "The UBC study looked at 4,500 first year physics and calculus students between 2002 and 2006 at UBC and found that public school graduates scored an average of about two to three per cent higher than private school graduates." "UBC mathematics professor George Bluman, who was one of the study's authors, said the lack of individual attention on students in public schools may actually give students an edge in the tougher university environment." I would tend to agree with these statements, however, a caveat. It depends on the public school your children attend. My children attended schools west of Granville in Vancouver which provided them with a high quality education (given the demographics of the area). I was by no means a wealthy parent, in fact I was a single parent but I chose to live there and pay the exorbitant higher rentals in order for my children to receive the best education I could find for them. Public schools do promote tolerance and absolutely expose children to a wide diversity of cultures. Private schools have the opposite effect. This is a good topic to explore. -

Did you comprehend my post? It's about using a person's sexuality against their will as a WEAPON. It's not about "people rape those which sexually arouse them. This is not exactly a secret." - quote from Argus. I don't understand your post. -
A manuscript that Harper Lee wrote in the 50's about the character 'Scout' from 'To Kill A Mockingbird' will be published soon and I can't wait to get the book. Most definitely 'To Kill A Mockingbird' book and film were right up there as my all time favourites. The synopsis of the book: "Watchman" is set in the 1950s and is about Scout -- Jean Louise Finch -- returning to her hometown of Maycomb, Alabama (a fictional version of Lee's hometown of Monroeville), to see her father, the upright lawyer Atticus Finch. "She is forced to grapple with issues both personal and political as she tries to understand her father's attitude toward society, and her own feelings about the place where she was born and spent her childhood," the press release said." BTW, she is now 88 years old and this book will be only her 2nd book to be published. Unbelieavable!

Unbelievable, the misunderstanding about rape: The majority of convicted rapists assaulted for the emotion gratification they received from the violent act, not out of sexual frustration (Helen Lenskyj, “An Analysis of Violence Against Women: A Manual for Educators and Administrators,” Toronto: Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, 1992). Rape is an act of violence; it involves asserting control over another person and taking their power from them. Rapists use a person’s sexuality against their will as a weapon. Rapists are not men who cannot control their sexual desires; rape is most often a premeditated crime. -

How would you improve working conditions on farms? Bringing in above-the-board workers is not working, hence the illegals. -
I'm not agreeing with the Harper approach to fight terrorism but I will say that many of us have been affected by terrorism. For instance, a trial is starting very soon this spring regarding the couple who had placed pressure cooker bombs on the property of the legislative building on Canada Day in 2013. Thankfully they were not real (thanks to undercover agents). This could have killed hundreds of people gathered there. They called themselves 'al Qaida Canada'.

Exactly my point. Thank you. So why shut out the immigrants who will do the work and save American businesses? -

If you read the links, you would see that I supported my statements. They were not flawed or biased as I reported comments from different parts of the good old U.S.A.
