Protect, Baby, Protect
WestCoastRunner replied to WestCoastRunner's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Exactly why he's throwing it out there on the table. Good for him. -
Obama seeks to protect Alaska from drilling for oil but looks to open the Atlantic Coast. They want to: Block future gas and oil exploration of over 9 million acres off the coast of Alaska Open the federal waters off the coast of Virginia, the Carolina's and Georgia. I say this is a good thing. Let's protect one of the last great marine wildernesses left untouched by development. Of course I could be a bit biased, since I am in BC but for those who are not, I suspect this issue impacts Canadians more than it does U.S. citizens. http://www.vox.com/2015/1/27/7921921/obama-oil-drilling-alaska http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2015/01/25/obama-alaksa-arctic-national-wildlife-refuge-lisa-murkowski-dan-sullivan/22312741/

An interesting opinion piece appeared on the CNN website today suggesting that the time may be right for a North American Passport involving Mexica, U.S. and Canada. Some of the suggested benefits include: By erecting a wall along the border and making crossings so difficult, costly and dangerous, we have interrupted the old "circularity" of migratory flows, trapping millions of workers on this side of the border. In the face of growing competition from rising powers elsewhere in the world, simply taking our geography for granted and focusing our attention elsewhere is no longer a viable option. Integrated production platforms, sometimes spanning all three countries, have helped draw manufacturing back from competitors across the Pacific. Mexico is the linchpin to the U.S. relations with the countries of Central and South America. The economic prosperity, education and security of Mexico's people will help determine the overall competitiveness of North America on the global stage. Moreover, Americans on this side of the Rio Grande must acknowledge the "Mexicanness" in the United States and treat Mexicans living here with the dignity and respect they deserve. I'm not convinced that this would be a good idea for Canada, but perhaps, yes, for the United States and Mexico.

Police are shooting the mentally ill
WestCoastRunner replied to jacee's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
Here in the lower mainland, BC is re-opening the Riverview Hospital (mental health facility). At one time at the height of its operations, there were 4700 in 1955. They started treating patients in 1913 (basically a locked-up facility for the patients). In 2012 it was shut down and they have now decided to reopen to treat addiction and mental illness. Planning is still underway but it's the right step moving forward for the Vancouver area. http://www.vancouversun.com/health/Some+mental+health+services+return+Riverview+hospital/10451746/story.html http://www.vancouversun.com/health/Some+mental+health+services+return+Riverview+hospital/10451746/story.html -
Why do the Republicans allow and encourage Palin and Trump to seek out the spotlight in Iowa? What's in it for them?

And he got his just reward at the end! Brad Pitt was pretty amazing too.

Maclean's: Winnipeg Is Most Racist City
WestCoastRunner replied to bush_cheney2004's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
I am not from Winnipeg. I grew up in Ontario and have spent the last 15 years in BC. I only spent a week in Winnipeg for a training course one year and I too was warned about 'violence in the streets after dark'. Well, I stayed in a hotel downtown but I did venture out and I survived! I also visited the beautiful legislative building and other beautiful architectural buildings and parks in the City. I found it to be a wonderful experience. I do think that it all depends on the visitor and what they are looking for. If they are looking for 'imposed' negative experiences, then that is what they will find. -
My perfect halftime show would be: Led Zep joined by Neil Young, Bob Dylan, and Joni Mitchell

Christophe Waltz was absolutely compelling in his performance in Inglorious Bastards. He drew us in with his absolute brutal honestly. He is a great actor.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but Amy Adams compels me to see it. I look forward to seeing it.

You had me going! Lenny Kravitz has become soo commercialized but I guess he is the best we can expect. Katy Perry, blah.

You know what? That has been a concern of mine. Seriously! They want our water and our oil!

That has nothing to do with cheerleading our Canadian exports.

Um, probably not. Your population is 10x ours. And yet, our Canadian talent rises above all others.

Any Canadian musicians playing at halftime? That's the only reason I watch it, for the halfway entertainment and the commercials.

Stop depending on Canadian talent like comics, musicians, screenwriters, film producers etc to provide high quality content to American audiences.
