I judge people as free individuals autonomous from their state, but in terms of cultural generalizations? The Hong Kong Chinese are far more British than the British themselves now, so the Hong Kong Chinese are my people more than the Dingbats in the UK are now.1 point

I think you're confused. A lot of Chinese already vote Conservative, and always have. A lot of Indo-Canadians to too. More Hindus than Sikhs. Muslims vote Liberal. I'm sure some political operative has a full breakdown somewhere but I haven't seen one. I have pointed out before that immigrants make up 20% of the population. And when public opinion polls are taken, no one exempts them. So when you see polls showing 2/3rds of respondents want face covering laws like Quebec, or 49% say there's too much immigration, those numbers include immigrants. That means either the numbers are considerably higher for just white Canadians, or a lot of immigrants also think there's too much immigration - especially from the wrong places. I guarantee you Chinese people don't think much of Arab immigrants, or anyone from Africa. Watching a bunch of border crossers largely made up of Haitians, Somalians and Nigerians is guaranteed to provoke them. The Chinese, by and large, pride themselves on being hard workers. They do not see these groups as being hard working AT ALL. They also see them as all too often being criminals involved in violent street crime, drugs and prostitution. Plus Africa in general is pretty much a pathetic crap hole, and the Chinese will inevitably blame Africans for that and figure they're a pathetic bunch of people. Another thing. The Hong Kong Chinese, who have been here longer, often don't think much of the newer flood of Chinese, who are from the Mainland. They regard them as crass, ill-mannered and uneducated.1 point

Brexit is a two-way street. Namely, even if it turns out to be a mistake for the Brits it also hurts what is left of the EU. Losing a big major member-state is huge defeat for the EU too. On the other hand, Brexit is a relief for the most ardent federalists within the EU as the most recalcitrant member-state is leaving there is less opposition to the idea of a European super-state.1 point

I think those were the 'black Israelite'. I don't think they were associated with the natives, since they were yelling insults at the natives earlier too.1 point

This whole event is indeed constructed by the media to present a false story. These "Native elders" approached and harassed these kids while they were waiting for their bus. Yelling 'Go back to Europe' at kids...classy.1 point

So this is, I think, an excellent example of wholesale adoption of fake news. This brief clip from a video has appeared on just about every news station and in every newspaper. It apparently shows native elders drumming, and a bunch of teens in MAGA hats surrounding them and jeering at them. It is described as an example of hatred being shown by Trump supporters towards natives and universally condemned, with the students being called every name in the book. https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/indigenous-march-student-mock-1.4985493 Below is an actual video from the event. It's too long to watch it all, but you can skip from place to place. This is the best description I've seen of it from another group. The indigenous peoples march occurred on the 18th in DC. As well, the Pro-Life event was happening the same day. The 'Red Hat' teens were there from Kentucky, largely for the Pro life march. From what I can see, both events had already winded down, and the teens were waiting at the Lincoln memorial, for pickup by their buses. Enter the Black Hebrew Israelite group. There were 5(?) or so of these guys, and they gravitated to the red hat teens, as filmed in the vid. I'm not sure if these guys are just the super fringe part of the group, but they seemed to be actively trying to instigate something with the red hats. At a couple times during the video they throw out some pretty vile comments, and try to single out the black teens in the red hats. They start screaming at the teens, yelling about the wall, and the red hats seem to respond with school chants/cheers. I didn't go over the vid finely with volume maxed, so I wasn't sure if the teens responded... poorl Enter Mr. Phillips. He was there earlier from the indigenous peoples march, and from the sounds of things, moved towards the commotion. Mr. Phillips is the Vietnam vet, who has been at a number of high profile events/marches. He approaches the two riled up groups, playing ceremonial drum, with a number of followers At this point I found it difficult to tell if the teens figured he was on their side and dancing with the drums, or were trying for mockery - maybe both? He walks into the group of teens, some smiling, some seemingly confused, some seemingly hostile and faces off with the teen in all the pictures going around. In the vids I've looked through, it doesn't ever look like the teens are preventing him from leaving - Teens perspective. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQyBHTTqb381 point

Indeed....Trump is a bastard...but he is our bastard...cementing years of Democrat losses across many states under Obama. Hillary Clinton will never be POTUS because of Trump, and that is a good thing.1 point

When his haters focus on stuff like this, who needs supporters?1 point

I always enjoy watching die-hard Trump haters squirm and pretend like they aren't a bigger help to Trump achieving his agenda than his supporters are. Trump has the most counter-productive haters of any politician that I have ever seen in my lifetime, and that's saying something.1 point

Never said Canada doesn't buy from elsewhere, but when Canadians buy Chinese goods and services, it's because they preferred them to goods and service located in other nations, and how cheap the products and services are has a big impact on that decision. Banning Chinese exports will cost Canadian consumers more than $38 billion by forcing them to buy elsewhere, Canada won't save any money by doing that, they will lose money doing that. Bet that.1 point
-
Buying from elsewhere wouldn't be cheaper, or we'd already being buy from there instead of China without any need for tariffs. Raising the price of Chinese goods means that the price of goods in Canada will be more expensive, which equals less spending by Canadians who can't afford those prices, which equals lost jobs. Tariffs are tax on national consumers, not on foreign exporters, national consumers lose more than the foreign exporters, the only one who wins are the subsidized non-competitive national industries that need tariffs to survive, everyone else loses, but the consumers lose the most.1 point
-
To wit, More Canadian jobs need Chinese exports than Chinese jobs that need Canadian exports, Canada loses, huge.1 point
-
I understand that not buying China's stuff means Canadians will have to spend more than $38 billion to get the same shit from somewhere else, and a lot of Canadians wouldn't spend that extra money for the same amount of products and services, and that means a lot of jobs in Canada would no longer exist. Your delusion that Canada holds a winning hand in a trade war with China is laughable, keep the comedy coming.1 point
-
You obviously think you know a lot about economics, but you're mistaken and have an inflated sense of your knowledge of the topic. /shrugs1 point
-
The trade deficit is proof that Canadians buy more Chinese products and services than the Chinese buy Canadian products and services. Which means Canadians benefits more from trade with China than the Chinese benefit from trade with Canada. /shrugs1 point
-
My point is that, if Canada wants a trade war with China and gives the world an ultimatum, Canada or China? The world is going to choose China, even with it's weaknesses, the world likes money, and China has a lot more of it than Canada does. So escalating shit with China, that isn't going to end in Canada's favor, so Canadians welcoming a tit for tat battle with China because of ideological opposition to China's repressive government, they are in for a rude awakening if they ever got their wish.1 point
-
Even if they did, more than 6x (or 12x if you go by GNP) the stuff to bribe other nations with makes the decision a no brainer, especially given that China is only going to increase that gap in the near future. Canada loses early in the first round of that hypothetical trade war.1 point
-
The world has no need of Canada. The world likes cheap consumer and electronic goods, the Chinese economy is far more important to the world than Canada's economy. China has plenty of friends and allies, everyone likes China, because no one who isn't living in China gives a shit about their repressive government, because that government isn't repressing them, it's repressing foreigners, but the money China makes them, that they do give a shit about, and China makes the world more money than Canada does. I'm not talking about the moral high ground here, that means nothing, the only thing the world cares about is the financial high ground, morality comes after. For you to pretend like a $1.6 trillion GDP economy is more important to the world than a $12.2 trillion GDP economy is laughable, they are six times the size, they dwarf Canada. Get in a trade war with an economy that dwarfs your own, and you are going to get your ass handed to you, not the other way around. Morality shmorality, realpolitik doesn't give a shit. /shrugs1 point

Yeah Trump picked when the Dems took control of the house so he could blame them, and it's going to work more and more the longer the shutdown drags on. Winning back the house is not a mandate to not properly fund border security just to obstruct Trump. The Republicans control the Presidency and the Senate and have a bigger mandate than Democrats, the Dems don't have a mandate to keep the government shutdown over not willing to let Trump fulfill his most famous campaign promise.1 point
