  1. Hello Canucks, greetings from your southern neighbor in Texas! Full disclosure I'm a Trump supporter. I would not worry too much about it canadian friends, trump is simply bargaining for "true free trade" across Nato countries. This means no tariffs or subsidies from either parties. Unfortunately, trump felt he needed to play his strong hand to rush these negotiation along. Fact of the matter is this, the trade deficit has allowed trump to use it as a bargaining chip. Not saying that there is a large deficit between US and Canada, just pointing to the fact that a trade deficit exist. Tarrifs hurts those relying on export to America (Canada, Mexico EU etc...) alot more than it hurts the American economy as we only export a few billion dollars worth of goods every year. This gives the US the upper hand in trade negotiation and Trump is simply doing that. Look you guys are our allies and friends, I wouldn't worry too much about these trade negotiation tactics. At the end of the day, you want true free trade, this helps both countries, ask any economics expert and they would point to the same thing. Think of this move not as a protectionist policy from the US (despite the rhetoric affirming so) , it is simply a move to make our alliance stronger through the practice of free trade. We are doing what is best for you Canada. No need to thank us.

  3. I agree there is nothing that hasn't been overcome in the past that we will face in the future. But once again , i believe you have trump in correctly characterized. He is not a fascist he is a populist. Second our democratic process has a way of weeding out the extreme elements but still afford the opportunity for growth. Some of us here rejects much of the progressivism that has overtaken canada. This is not necessarily a bad thing by the way. I've talked with plenty of liberals and progressive, they seem to forget that the world run on a fundamental fact call reality not idealism.

  4. Hahaahaa, you can tell them anything you want. But sooner or later they will find out the truth. There is no god, no one gives a crap if you get a tattoo, eat lobster or get laid before marriage. But I suspect you Christians already know that, since you get tattoos, eat lobster and get laid before marriage.

  5. That's right...it is Trump's America for now....nothing Canada can do about it...except watch even more America television.

  6. I would say trump is re establishing our credibility in the world stage. Take russia and syria for instance. We said no more chemical weapons and we mean it. And if you try to send a mercenary force to attack us you will be obliterated. The meek obama days are over. We will back our diplomats with force if necessary. So take the carrot not the stick. We are re asserting our selves in the world stage. As for the domestic theater feel free to call us out on it. If we don't like it we will replace him with someone else to our liking next term.

  7. You do realize what trump says and does are two totally separate things right? He does not represent every American nor does he have complete power to do as he sees fit. We have great people working in the state department and many other agency with plenty of credibility. It's called checks and balances. They were simply hampered by Obama's risk adverse tendency and allowed the world to loose faith in American credibility. Trump is simply re-establishing those credibility. Now what ever he said was probably said with mis-information about the matter to pander to political views some of his consitutent share so I wouldn't take it personal. But make no mistake , trump share some strong views that many in america also agree with and should not be so readily discounted as rubbish. We are america we are imperfect but we will be strong together.

  8. Indeed...it really is pathetic when people hold Donald Trump more responsible for what happens in Canada than their own prime minister. Trump did not give Justin Trudeau a majority government (and all that entails) in Canada.

  9. Yes...many Canadians warned that the FTA and NAFTA would lead to exactly what has transpired....foreign (American ownership of Canadian economic base), more dependence on exports to a single nation, more political influence from foreign nations, more dependence on foreign direct investment, "harmonizing" of environmental regulation for consumer/industrial products, and American capture of bitumen exports at a large discount. Author Maude Barlow has been screaming about this for years, as have many other Canadian authors/pundits....all ignored. The Liberals hated FTA/NAFTA....but now the LOVE it ?

  10. It depends on what you mean by the word "hate." There's been an increasing tendency in the West to equate the meaning of hate merely with perceived offense. This is untenable in the Western intellectual context, which is grounded in a philosophy of challenge and objective criticism. In Canada, for instance, criticism of some religious practices and beliefs is often conflated these days with "phobia" or fear and is thus held to be promoting hatred, even where there's no obvious justification for this conclusion. Even defending secularism, which an eminently reasonable concept in a pluralistic society, gets lumped by some into the category of promoting hatred. We need to get back to basics here, and acknowledge the primacy of free speech before we lose sight of the virtues of Western intellectual inquiry and criticism.

  11. And you've allowed that hate to influence your feelings about attacks on Canada. Anything you think makes Trudeau look bad you delight in, even if it hurts Canada. That's dumb, short-term thinking.

  12. Undoubtedly, American military and economic power is waning relative to the rest of the world. But we should be wary about celebrating this. As economic power and prestige strengthens in what we now describe as the 'developing world,' we may have to make policy choices that could for many be unpalatable. The international order largely built by American fiat after WWII has been the basis of generally prolonged peace and prosperity for most in the West. Replacing America's often irksome influence might just turn out to be a bigger nightmare than we've bargained for. As my mother used to say, it's dangerous to dive into water without knowing what's below the surface.

  13. Generally speaking, I oppose the concept of censorship. I do, however, believe it necessary to restrict speech that's intended to incite violence against members of any specific group, which historically has been the intent of hate speech laws in democratic countries. In a free and democratic society, there must be no topics that are presumptively deemed to be beyond the realm of public discourse. The role of a responsible citizenry is to ensure that debate is fairly and civilly conducted. The tendency to bully others into silence has seemingly increased, and particularly so in academia, which is disturbing. Democracy can't survive without freedom of speech and anybody who says otherwise is either a fool or is taking the rest of us for fools.

  14. There may be economic reasons for wanting to withdraw, which necessitates a resolution to this decades old problem. A good sign would be if the war is officially declared over. For now, what we saw in Singapore was (at best) symbolic. It is however, at least the right kind of symbolism. I'm with Trump if he applies pressure on all fronts, including options for NK that give them positive outcomes... a place for them to escape, without annihilation.

  15. You really hate Canada, don't you? Your glee whenever anyone seems to be attacking us is palpable. As to Italy, this likely has little to do with Canada, but more to do with Italy seeking to extort something out of the EU, and using this treaty as a handy lever.

  16. UH-OH. And we think it's only NAFTA that's a problem? Here comes CETA! Italy won't ratify EU free-trade deal with Canada, says new farm minister Italy will not ratify the European Union's free trade agreement with Canada, its new agriculture minister said on Thursday, ratcheting up an international trade spat and potentially scuppering the EU's biggest accord in years. http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/italy-ceta-canada-food-1.4705622

  17. Great news on Canada! Well done Trudeau! He does get a lot of criticism here but his humility and care is commendable... Although getting the sneaky brits on board to cut ties with mullahs is a big challenge. UK has akways had an “island mentality” which explains why Brexit is happening and is s complete mess...This closed mentality is never forthright with expressing anger/ emotions and their love of mullahs shows the their true colours. Same for the french government. Biggest hypocrite and ass kissers imo...

  18. Because about 50,000,000 of those Americans come from those other 194 countries...no other nation in the world has more landed immigrants than the United States. Americans come from all over the world. Don't worry about the army....it's the navy and air force that has thousands of nuclear weapons to make sure nobody else would survive either. Because Canada can't even defend itself, let alone kill all the Americans. I suppose Canada could bore all the Americans to death by making them watch the CBC.

  19. I don't think you understand....nothing Trump has done prevents or precludes Trump from attacking the DPRK in response to an existential threat. Kim does not control the ultimate outcome of such a conflagration...Trump does.

  20. No, because Canada's retaliation tariffs are intended for domestic politics, not the well being of the Canadian consumer. If higher prices and taxes in Canada were a big concern, then they wouldn't be purposely aggravated by supply management, provincial policies (remember Kathleen Wynne ?), inter-provincial trade barriers (what beer ?), and a longstanding dependence on export trade to a single nation, which makes Canada so much more vulnerable to Trump's trade decisions in the first place. Canada has been challenged for tariff and non-tariff barriers to trade by other U.S. administrations and nations (e.g. New Zealand, Brazil, EU). Trump's strategy is not only directed at Canada...Canada is not special in regard to his anti-globalist agenda. Trump cannot be pressured with conventional political maneuvering, inside or outside his Republican party. Trudeau and Freeland will have to continue what they have been doing for more than a year in the U.S., with no success to date. Also better figure out how to assist Canadian interests impacted by the tariffs, or they may go under for good. (This has happened before, having nothing to do with Trump.)

  21. I would agree if the world was not full of assholes, Most Canadians would say the same thing, under equipped, under manned, and still we take pride in keeping it that way, when some of our citizens think our nation is worth sacrificing for....unless it cost any money...then screw that.... The Airforce think the F-35 program was worth investing into....and considering what is available in gen 5 aircraft....it is worth a look....it does make headway every day, and is now considered cheaper than most gen 4.5 aircraft... We are all pawns of the government, they demand our money and then do what ever they please with it....One day we will get a leader that has the balls to use his position for the good of the nation.

  23. You didn't answer with regards to the accuracy of the headline. It said he had not made any payments to the children when in fact the content of the story clearly said that the Will specifically said no payments were to be made until they were adults (25, actually). We don't know what the will said for the widow - except that she had full ownership of the family house because she had already blown through the proceeds from a couple of mortgages. So really - do you think the headline in the Star was fair?

  25. Wrong again. I don't hate Canada. I'm angry at the ones sinking Canada. We don't need outside interference like Trump - to realize we're in trouble! You, yourself, have been on about your anger for the leaders running this country even before Trump came into the picture! Since Trudeau won! How many Liberal attack threads have you posted??? Don't you get who's negotiating for Canada? Was it Trump who negotiated for Canada with Italy? Like you, I'm angry......for Canada. But unlike you........ I don't get side-tracked easily.
