  3. Way to start a discussion of a book - by tossing out spoilers. Tolkien is basically the father of modern fantasy. So many books and series of books are derivative of LOTR

  5. I don't think anyone can explain anything to you in a way that you'll understand, however, you could give a theory on something for a change.

  6. I feel a bit like Frodo myself (little guy but ballsy), except that I didn't live with a dirty old uncle who likes to celebrate joint "birthday parties".

  7. I'm sorry Betsy, who died and appointed you Pope? I think you've done a pretty good job of derailing it yourself. I respect the fact that other people have a different view than me. However, you don't have to present your own views with such smugness. That won't spread the word of Jesus Christ, the good news, or save souls. It only turns people off. When making an argument, especially a religious one, it's best to keep in mind that you can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. You're trying to shove pseudo-scientific arguments down our throats, and when we have the awful temerity to disagree with you, we're either idiots or somehow un-Christian. And on that note: Why do you notice the splinter in your brother's eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, 'Let me remove that splinter from your eye,' while the wooden beam is in your own eye? You hypocrite, remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter from your brother's eye. (Matthew 7:3-5)

  8. Very well stated and factual! Not to forget this little Jewish woman also mentioned in the Bible... https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esther You know it doesn't really surprise me. You get certain people here who go on usual rant to label Iran as terrorist state no matter what. Best way is just observe them and see these rants in the greater scheme of things....

  9. Was taking Saddam Hussein out the right decision then? What about Qaddafi? Why are they gone, but the Saudis keep on causing more terrorism via the West's help?

  10. Actually there are a few errors in above post. It is true unlike what DOP said, yes the British and Russians cooperated on the coordinated invasion and deposed the Shah BUT he was replaced with his SON not nephew. Yes the new Shah despised Russians for Good reasons (as everyone in his right mind would). They tried to take over and separate the North West Azeri province and make it a Soviet bloc. It was his policy and army with US and UN support which liberated that province from Russians. BUT he was not pro-British either because the British exiled his father and likely killed him to (indirectly he died of sadness to see his beloved country under occupation). He despised the British but had to be cozy with them as Britain was a major part of western alliance against Russia plus a good source of weapons (Chieftain tanks) for his army. Yes the Shah was pro-west because it was during the cold war and Iran was under threat from northern neighbor so in order to protect Iran and his throne he had to get close to US and Nato not to mention the aid he received in 1953 from the CIA to get back his throne. The pre-Islamic Persia as it used to be called (Persian empire) was NOT violent as it carried out many good deeds. The Very first Charter of Human rights in history which brought equality to all races under Persian Empire was brought in by Persian King 2500 years ago. http://www.humanrights.com/what-are-human-rights/brief-history/ This empire also Freed Jews from slavery some 2500 years ago. BCE. The conquest of Babylon by Cyrus the Great the founder of the second Iranian dynasty, the Achaemenids, also brought many Jews into the mainland. In 539 BCE, Emperor Cyrus entered Babylon with little resistance. The temple of Marduk their major deity was restored and Cyrus crowned himself in the name of Marduk. The Jewish slaves in Babylon were freed and permitted to go home and reconstruct the temple of Jerusalem and some chose to remain in the new Empire. The restoration was confirmed by Darius the Great and commenced at the time of Artaxerxes I. Under Darius around 30,000 Jews left Babylon to start work on the temple. The mild treatment Iranians accorded their conquered subjects was part of the Imperial doctrine led by Cyrus the Great which was influenced by his Zoroastrian faith. The policies of the central administration encouraged autonomy in internal affairs with little intervention from the Iranians. For instance, the Satrap (Governor General) of Judah, which constituted the fifth Satrapy, had his own local governor in Samaria with the right of supervision over the deputy in Judah. Violence started after Arab invasion 1400 years ago.

  11. Between 800 - 1100 AD, Islam was the center of research and scientific discovery. We benefit today with Arabic numerals, algebra and algorithms among others. They also studied the universe, which is why so many stars have ended up with Arabic names. In 1100, that all stopped. Why? Because a follower of Islam decided that all glory should be given to Allah, that mathematics was the work of the devil. So, scientific investigation stopped and we see where Islam is today. In the 21st century, there is a significant push to teach 'intelligent design' in the schools of America and to present evolution as a theory against which creationism holds equal validity. The anti-science movement has become a problem that is killing people, especially children, as "natural remedies" are chosen over medicine and vaccines are considered poison. The States, formerly a powerhouse of scientific advancement, now has at it's helm people who are scientifically illiterate and dismissive of science in general. I don't trust God, whether he is called Lord, Allah or Yaweh, because he holds people back - to their detriment. Magic instead of knowledge, myths over truth, judgment and oppression over tolerance and freedom - that is the legacy of religion. No religion is free from this; given power, it's first order of business is to eliminate opposition, especially ideas that contradict their myths. Those who claim that Christianity is 'different' ignore history and they also ignore the example in the States where the current "Christian" administration is following in the path of Islam, 1000 years ago, attacking science and scientific institutions. Notwithstanding the fact that many religious people are decent, loving, tolerant and pro-science, I sincerely hope there comes a day when humanity leaves every form of "God" in the dust.
