robosmith Posted February 6 Report Posted February 6 Fear, pain and hunger: The dire impact of U.S. funding cuts in Africa Trump;s and Musk's desperate attempt to unilaterally shut down USAID is clearly a violation of the IMPOUND ACT but Trump is intent on PROVING the law does NOT apply to him. 🤮 Quote Soup kitchens can no longer feed the hungry. First responders are unable to reach the dead and wounded. Mothers and fathers search in vain for the medicines that keep them alive. Across Africa, in bombed-out Sudanese cities, Kenyan clinics and Mauritanian refugee camps, the policies of the Trump administration are already having profound consequences for some of the world’s most vulnerable people. The president’s decision to cancel or suspend billions of dollars’ worth of foreign aid — followed by ill-defined exemptions — are deepening humanitarian crises and putting an untold number of lives at risk, according to front-line aid workers and civilians who rely on American-funded programs.  Quote

No where does it say that the US (or Canada) should keep supporting/funding other nations and their issues. I kinda agree that all external support and funding should be reviewed and with a fine tooth comb. There are certainly lots of waste and corruption going on especially when the money gets in country. Proof of where the funds go should be demanded and given r they get cut off. I feel the exact same about our constant funding of first nations here. If you get government funds, you need to prove where it goes and how it is spent and the boks need to be open and up for audit.  1 Quote Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Do you think all the other nations of the world are failing here, that Canada should have picked up the tab and they are just as guilty for people dying? 1 Quote  Â
ironstone Posted February 6 Report Posted February 6 Over many decades, billions of dollars in aid has gone to sub-Saharan Africa, primarily from Western nations. It is fair to ask why all those countries still seem to be always lagging behind the rest of the world. Where did all that money go? Sani Abacha, Nigeria’s former military ruler, was a billionaire - and not in naira, but in dollars. Upon his death in 1998, the Nigerian government uncovered over $3 billion linked to the sadistic despot held in personal and proxy bank accounts in tax havens as diverse as Switzerland, Luxembourg, Jersey and Liechtenstein. Following a series of negotiations between the Nigerian government and the Abacha family, Abacha’s first son, Mohammed eventually returned $1.2 billion to the Nigerian government in 2002. Another theoretical billionaire was Mobutu Sese Seko, the former president of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Over his 30-year reign as ruler of the resource-rich Central African country, Sese Seko amassed a personal fortune estimated by various sources (including Transparency International) at somewhere between $1 billion and $5 billion. Experts believe virtually all of it was illicitly acquired from the nation’s coffers and stashed away in Swiss banks. While his reign lasted, Sese Seko earned an international notoriety as a poster boy for the excesses of typical African despots. He owned a string of exotic Mercedes cars and divided his time between plush palatial residences in Paris and Lausanne, Switzerland. He also developed a special taste for pink Champagne and flew in fresh cakes from Paris for his consumption. But one of the wealthiest, albeit lesser-talked about African leaders to emerge from Africa is Nigeria’s former military president, Ibrahim Babangida. The gap-toothed military general and self-acclaimed “Evil genius” is unofficially one of the richest men in Nigeria and in Africa. The 70 year-old former military ruler governed Nigeria from 1985 to 1993 and is widely believed to have laundered some $12 billion earned from an oil windfall during the 1992 Gulf War. 1 Quote "Socialism in general has a record of failure so blatant that only an intellectual could ignore or evade it." Africans have black skin. You'd be a real live racist if you asked such questions of them. Just keep the taps open and let Africa do what it wants. That's the "woke" thing to do.
