Civilian aircraft and drones have transponders that indicate their unique ID and altitude. If you find a drone with no transponder, it's safe to say it isn't a civilian aircraft. I will say, 99.99% of the X videos and photos are airplanes. That doesn't eliminate the possibility of some drones in NJ. It just means that people don't know what they are looking at. I don't think China, Iran or Russia would fly drones in our airspace and leave the lights on for everyone to see. But that's just me. Airplanes and helicopters have a steady red light on the left, a steady green light on the right, a red light on the top and bottom that appears to flash and two white strobe lights (one on either side). Most amature and commercial drones have 2 green and 2 red (one on either side) lights to help the operator orient for line of sight control. Some military drones have lighting systems identical to aircraft and helicopters. Airplanes, helicopters, and drones have transponders that send discrete codes and altitude to the ATC radar system. Military drones do as well, but that can be turned off for combat operations. The thing about stories like this is they tend to get tons and tons of false reports. That's what you will see all over social media. Scattered in those false reports are a precious few real sightings. It's possible this is a mass hysteria event brought about by a single (or several), misguided report. In Canada, and I'm sure the US as well, you have to get a license to fly drones above half a pound or something like that, you have to register them with some kind of aviation authority, and then you can't just fly them wherever you want. There are quite broad restrictions around airports, probably also schools and private residences. Side note: Delivery drones are quickly becoming very critical components of the supply chain in other parts of the world. There are some African nations with underdeveloped road systems which get all of their medications delivered by drones because they're incredibly cheap to buy and operate, they're basically 100% reliable, and they're lightning-fast compared to using regular vehicles. Those drones are shaped quite like planes, but with variable geometry so that they can switch between fixed-wing flight and hovering as needed, but there are companies with plans to build "mothership" type drones, which carry several smaller drones to different communities, which just drop down to street-level to pick up/deliver packages and then return to the "mothership" for group travel. It stands to reason that companies that are developing these delivery drone systems over here would be very secretive about their designs and how they intend to deploy them for widespread commercial use. Imagine if you could buy drones for $500 each, and they offered the service of picking up and dropping off packages anywhere in the GTA within 1 hr... How much would that be worth per trip? How much would it cost if you could call a courier at 10 AM on Wednesday morning and they could pick something up in Mississauga and drop it off in Oshawa within the hr? That's not doable by car. Delivery drone services stand to be very lucrative. It's very likely that there are a lot of big, highly secret drones flying around the US, but the secrecy around them is commercial in nature, and has nothing to do with clandestine operations from hostile foreign nations. BUT... imagine other drones, the size of a big bumblebee, that deliver a small explosive charge to the heads of unvaxed chuds... Drones can be used as very aggressive and precise weapons system.
