Or in the particular case as minimally 'woke' as possible.

The books are no longer part of the curriculum. They are still in school libraries and if a teacher wishes to use them, must review with the schools principal and discuss in class any harms in the book.
They aren't banned.

Nor are they of such outstanding literary stature students of colour must read  books that refer to themselves in negative and derogatory terms. But they still can, so long as that point is made clear to everyone.

You're telling me high school students can handle n-words in the music they listen to but can't handle a few of them in some books?  These are just problems some do-gooders invent because they have nothing productive to actually worry about.

20 bucks says you're from BC.

What else is there to worry about? Well there's climate change, economic inequality, war. But everyone's given up on ever getting anything productive done about these so why not sweat the small shit?

Did you know Citharas are what Romans played near the end? They actually didn't have fiddles for another 1500 years.

Which doesn't exist in the first place but is certainly not an issue now as the wealthy are taking their money out of Canada so we won't have to worry about it

because given how badly they handled climate change, economic inequality and war, they're pretty much guaranteed to destroy the little 'small stuff' we have left.

Sigh.  You lefties never learn. And once again it'll be the poor who pay, just wait and see.

If you can't distinguish black musicians using those words in their own music genre from white authors in books, YOU have the problem. Clue: it's got to do with referring to themselves or being derogatory to others.

This is happening in Surrey BC where they're about as left as that obstinate ass Danielle Smith by a School Board which is a handful of people anyone can run against should they want to do more than snivel and whine.

The real problem is those that continue to iMAGINE that this is a left or right 'problem', not one book was "pulled" they're still in the school library and it sure as f*ck has dick all to do with carbon taxes or any other level of govt.

If you don't realize how racist that is then the problem is yours, and racism will continue to grow within this country and around the world.

I mean - if black people have words that only blacks can use, why should I let black people use the words of MY people?  Why should we share the same space if we don't even share language.  They should live apart from my race, we shoudln't have them mix with our children

Etc etc. That is how racism works. You're a racist, and you're  promoting racism.  Where do you think that ends.

You MUST read and report on these books that refer to you as such or you will fail your Literature class as these are historical books your Grandad was required to read, nothing of value has ever been written since.

Good God! White privilege at it's blindest.

it doesn't take long to see why your posts are ignorant - so responding to that doesn't take much time :)

Say something worth thinking about and people will take longer.

All of those are things black people can and do call others.  So how are they examples of things which are only 'white words'?

What why people refer to themseves as 'whitey'?

Swing and a miss kiddo - those aren't 'white' only words - those are STILL black words that we don't use.

Books? Hell you can find most of those in the weekly newspaper :)

And sorry punkin but if it's  a good story i'd read a book with those phrases toady. In fact - i'm reading your post and somehow i haven't collapsed in tears or had my life ruined.  How is that possible?

IF anything you just proved my point - and you're still a racist.

Just some fun with a couple quick searches:

'Redneck' government was anti-Indian, Ipperwash inquiry hears

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Settler_colonialism_in_Canada

Two for one in that link :)  Settlers AND colonials

Not hard to find the others either.  So - looks like  "whitey" is expected to put up with that, where somehow it's just horrible if someoen other than a black person says 'n*gger'.

You're not JUST a racist - you're also a hypocrite :)

You think some kid who isn't an annoying entitled future Karen is going to care if a white author from 60 years ago puts the N word in a book written about a time when people used that word?

As someone who has read a ton of classic literature, there is a fair degree of racism in the pages. However, it is revisionist to expect them to not be. Does that completely invalidate it? Not even close. I realize that these books are not being banned but still it is fairly reflexive and immature to exclude these. If you really want to understand the 1917 Russian Revolution, you need to read War and Peace by Tolstoy and The Id10t by Dostoyevsky. These novels are full of stuff that would get you cancelled in 2024, but are also full of historical backstory that clues you into why the 1917 revolution came to be.

Hell if you want a clearer picture of what life in america was like then even classics like tom sawyer and grapes of wrath are incredibly valuable.

And the CORRECT answer to the racism in those books is to talk to the kids about it when they read it.  Read the books with them, talk about the past, talk about the racism of the day and why we've learned better, discuss how they can be better.

Burning the book and trying to pretend it never existed is just childish.

Wow - what a really well thought out reply, so insightful, so to the point! LOL

You're an excellent example of our education system at work and why we need to keep the woke from it :)
