Why does any of this matter? Seven million Jews and two million Palestinians live in Israel. Neither group is going to leave, so the two sides need to develop a peace plan.

The problem is not with the Palestinians who were accorded their right of return (or never left). 

The dispute is with Palestinians who were driven out to cement the Jewish majority which was otherwise tenuous.

Or one side needs to kill the other off.   Historically that's how it works.

Hopefully they'll choose the former but it seems like hamas is a big fan of the latter.
