A Liberal MP was found to be connecting to a Parliament session from the toilet. How much attention should your representative spare on the representative duties consumed in whatever priority matters?

No further action is necessary - this is just as it should be. $185K (minimum) for a few minutes of your most precious time. As featured on BBC.

You pay them like a small CEO and this is the kind of attitude and attention you get. What do you get for $186K annually from a toilet real estate expert what rate of button-pushes? How many small and medium business CEO and managers can't dream of having a salary like that? It started as a decent imitation but will end ridiculous or much worse.

What kind of meeting was it to take your computer and take a dump... I mean who does that, first, it was hey take the meeting naked, now they have a meeting in the toilet stalls... got to be the new generations... I know my generation took a book to read, today you show everyone your poo face, and grunting is the new norm...

We, the willing, led by the unknowing, are doing the impossible for the ungrateful. We have now done so much for so long with so little, we are now capable of doing anything with nothing.

That is a good question: who does that being paid $186K, bare minimum? Let's guess: Demigods? Nibelungs? The Exalted Ones in a Full and Accomplished Detachment from the lowly reality; or any other ideas? or your friendly, approachable neighborhood representative?

Fitting. It's the perfect metaphor for the LOPC, and probably the most productive ten minutes of his career as a politician.

And by the way it's people like this who will keep your PM and government in check. Along with appointed by him independent" party exec AG and ceremonial GG. Just watch them (literally, now). Never worry, your democracy is in sure hands.

Regular MPs should be part time, on real job and paid by the taxpayer a stipend equal to the median income in the country with reasonable expenses directly related to the duty (no $17 juice). That would be fair and equitable and whatever you like to say that isn't true in any approximation.

Constituents donate for the registration fee that has to be cut by 5 or more to prevent superficial barriers to representation playing into the hands of default governing parties.

Whip system should be discontinued and made illegal. Parties are political clubs and no more. MPs vote on their conscience and will of constituents.

Constituents can pay their MP more if they really like what they're doing for them. But not a dime more form the taxpayers.

Otherwise there will be no end to the grotesque show and it'll never stop to amaze us with new heights of detachment and absurdity.

I take it you have not read "The Good Soldier Švejk" by Hashek.

Schvejk was commended for standing up to salute a senior officer while on the toilet.

Myata, your first democracy thread went down the toilet, now you start a new one and always about the $186K (minimum).

See a specialist please.

Its easy to see that you're fine paying your employee-representative this kind of wages for working out of that place, with all the care and attention it requires. Would you pay a toilet-worker to swipe your house or clean your nose? That is your call and your choice. That much is clear and I agree. So what would it have to do with me?

It does.  You are constantly barking at the wrong tree, distracting people with non-existing problems.

I don't care that $2.47 of the $10K in taxes I paid in 2021 went into the pocket of an MP.  I can give you $10 to compensate you what you've paid and will pay in the next 3 years, just so you stop that stupidity!

The problem is totally different !  The problem is that lots of the $320 billion comes from land sales, so the places I can go to get smaller and fewer; lots comes in as a result of resource based industries, so my environment gets polluted and my forests are destroyed.

And then much of the $320 billion collected gets spent on bullshit projects that I did not want to support.

How can a specialist fix your narrow mindedness is the question.

And what if it's only the mirror? These are parts of the same problem; one cannot exist without the other. The selling party can only go with out of all bounds happy democratic" bureaucracy and it goes on exactly to prolong its (trigger)happy and careless rule. Debt and selling the land, there are only two sources of funding. The debt will run out first.

The MP salaries is a non-problem to me, even if they received $500K/year - if this would stop littering along highways, the mass immigration, the monstrous pipeline, damn, mining, logging projects, they can go ahead and give themselves a 300% raise, I don't care.

What you mean by "The debt will run out first." is not clear to me.  The resources will run out before the debt.

You fail to grasp connections; focus on one piece of agenda to the exclusion and ignorance of all else. It, the system needs these outrageously paid as expensive as useless decorations to maintain democratic facade to keep doing what it's been doing, happily, for decades (and centuries). The party committee buys MPs with obscene, unreasonable privileges; then it strips them, de facto, of all and any vestiges of independence. And then, sky is the limit and future looks bright as ever.

Sorry - that would be: sound AND camera.  If you are in a 2-hour Zoom call and you don't want to miss anything you stay online.  Makes more sense to leave the laptop on the floor outside the bathroom with the sound turned up.

Or so I have heard.

Funny and still funnier. Like anything would change whatever they do. Just can't go p*ss without some major national impact. This is why you must have us, no we insist.

It is very clear to me that you have absolutely no idea what it entails to be an elected official. The effort, the time, the hours and travel are far more than you would put up with in any job you ever had or will have.

Not defending politicians just trying to expand your narrow mind.

Are you saying the environment and forests and lakes etc are not yours? (89% of the land and lakes etc are public)

Oh? OK.

Oh? OK.

If people are worried about what is their being taken, maybe we can make a publicly viewable register of how many assets people have ?

Then we could focus on those who are truly in need and have the ones whining ignored.

Just a thought, don't get angry people...
