Will the Trump Tax Scandal Hurt Him?

Recommended Posts

Trump's popularity has been remarkably immune to things that would have ended most presidencies.  Open racism?  It doesn't matter.  He's caught on tape expressing misogynistic thoughts?  "Locker room talk".  He uses the presidency to line his pockets?  He's a "smart business man".  He rips off his contractors?  Everyone does it.

Will the revelation that he pays basically no income taxes hurt him?  Will his supporters finally see themselves as chumps for backing him?  It's too soon to say.  But this could be the thing that finally hurts him.  Ordinary people collecting paychecks have neither the tax loopholes nor the army of accountants and tax lawyers to do what he does.  How can anyone see Trump as being an "ordinary guy" now?

Everyone doesn't do it...but Bill and Hillary Clinton sure did...and the Clinton presidency survived anyway.

What "Trump Tax Scandal?"

Are you talking about the fake news article from the fishwrap of record?

NY Times tax return nothingburger helps President Trump win more voters

It was supposed to be the story that destroyed the Trump campaign. It won't. In fact, the New York Times bungled it so badly, they may have helped him.

Trump junior makes an interesting point connected to that.

There were cases where these refunds and such the left is pretending to be so outraged about happened under an Obama presidency.

Kayleigh Mcenany makes the point that the Dems and their media tried inventing what this thread calls "a tax scandal" in the last election. Didn't work that time either:

Trump has made his name on how great he is at business.  He's a damned fraud.  His main accomplishments are an unbroken string of bankruptcies.

You guys are all victims of the big con.

I don't expect Trump supporters to really care that the hundreds of millions of dollars of personally guaranteed debt owed to entities unknown make their president vulnerable to leverage.

Because, really, by now, they've demonstrated they care about nothing except "owning the libruls".

The tax code is the result of decades of bribery by various moneyed interests who paid presidents, congressmen and senators of both parties to adjust the tax laws to allow them to exempt a wide variety of things, to write down, write off, and pay minimal or no taxes on money made in various ways. For example, in the last tax cut a special tax provision was included which would help... real estate developers. No one seems to be able to explain why.

Which allows scumbag rich boys like Trump to pay a tiny fraction of the taxes ordinary people pay every year.

Wow.  Money laundering.  Can't say I'm surprised.  BTW this is Forbes magazine...

I don't know if it will hurt him.  Maybe the best bell weather is the response from his cult on here.

Yeah, it's pretty bizarre just how much corruption they'll accept from Trump.  Maybe it has something to do with sunk costs, but its gullibility instead of money.

As with almost everything about Trump, he shows rampant hypocrisy for repeatedly criticizing Obama for not paying enough taxes.

Will this bother his supporters?  Probably not.  They've shown the unique ability to tune out everything negative about him (and that's quite a trick given what a vile history he has).

It's only $170 million.  I'm sure over the years, Trump has ripped people off for a lot more than that.  Which of his businesses haven't been scams of one sort or another?

No doubt each one of his supporters on this board paid more than $750 in income taxes.  They'd be in prison for pulling the crap he's gotten away with.  Does it bother them?

I suppose when you're a true believer, you can swallow anything.

Nonsense. The rich find tax breaks. You're not breaking any groundbreaking news by telling people this. It's one of the arguments you hear when they talk about how at one time there was a 90% income tax. The rich were able to hire the people to find them tax breaks and could pay less than they did before the tax hikes. Much less. Remember Warren Buffet pretending to complain about paying less than his secretary on tax while his company fought in court to have billions in tax debt expunged?

Yeah.  Not so much.

I know you Trump supporters aren't so big on "librul" stuff like "reading" or "thinking".  But maybe before you talk BS, you could think that the rest of us have the internet as a resource.

The richest 400 Americans paid an overall tax rate of 23%, including federal, state and local taxes, compared with 24.2% for the bottom 50% — and compared with Trump's effective 0% federal income tax

Yep, the tax code is filled with carve outs that Trump isn’t responsible for.  He paid the legally required amount in taxes.

This is a rehashed story that Argus posted a couple of months ago.  Anyone can accuse anybody of anything, it doesn’t mean that it’s true.  Also, the non partisan characterization related to this group is extremely inaccurate.

And maybe you gullible TDSers might want to read the things you find on the internet before you start bragging about what you think is in there.

Here's the Intro to your article:

The tax-avoidance strategies that President Donald Trump capitalized on to shrink his tax burden to essentially zero are surprisingly common among major real estate developers and other uber-wealthy Americans.

How is that not what I said?

Still, Wamhoff noted, Trump claims “the special breaks and loopholes that are available in the tax code and sometimes just takes them to a whole new level."

In other words, he's a tax cheat.

The law became even more beneficial to them after Trump's Republican allies in Congress pushed through his $1.5 trillion tax overhaul, which took effect in 2018.

Oh, and look at that.  Your corrupt president signed a tax bill that provided a huge benefit to him personally.

But hey, drain the swamp, right?
