Boges Posted July 13, 2020 Report Posted July 13, 2020 (edited) https://www.cnbc.com/2020/07/13/washington-redskins-officially-retire-name-and-logo-after-sponsor-backlash.html This has been hotly debated amongst sports fans for years now. The name is obviously racial slur. Many broadcasters had refused to utter the name, saying instead: "The Washington Football Team" or just "Washington". The owner didn't have to change the name so he didn't. The team makes money (even though they've largely been bad on the field) and there was no need to. . . Until corporate sponsors decided they wouldn't sell Redskin gear or do business with the team. FedEx had even threatened to pull it's sponsorship of the stadium they play in. Today, the team announced that the name will finally be changed. This is not cancel culture, this is corporate America deciding who they want to do business with and effecting change that way. Free Speech works in this instance. Will the Edmonton Eskimos follow suit? Edited July 13, 2020 by Boges Quote
Shady Posted July 13, 2020 Report Posted July 13, 2020 I think they should just call them the Warriors. They could keep the same colours and logo. Edmonton will follow suit, and unfortunately even Notre Dame is being asked to change from the Fighting Irish. Hopefully this insanity will stop at some point. Quote

I can certainly see PETA getting involved in a movement to ban such exploitative names as "Sharks" "Lions" and "Bulls". Stick to "City" and "United" guys. Quote

Again it's not about small groups that may be offended. When corporate groups feel the pressure, that's what ultimately effects change. I have never heard anyone say anything about an animal Sports name. Quote

I actually couldn't care less what a team is called. If they are not Bradford City, they are all just spinning their wheels... Edited July 13, 2020 by bcsapper Quote
bush_cheney2004 Posted July 13, 2020 Report Posted July 13, 2020 But the "Vikings" team name is still OK...because they were "white" ? 1 Quote Economics trumps Virtue.

So are the Spartans or Rangers. Braves and Chiefs get to stay for now. Redskins is particularly offensive. I'm wondering when the Ole Miss Running Rebels get targeted for a name change. My favourite name change was Syracuse Orangemen changing to just the Orange. I think it was because of the "men" part but I thought it was funny because Orangemen are Protestant militants. RedDog Posted July 24, 2021 Report Posted July 24, 2021 The Eskimos of course DID follow suit and are now the Elks. In addition, just yesterday actor Tom Hanks announced the new name of the former Cleveland Indians. They'll now be the Cleveland Guardians. I've yet to hear any word on a new name for the former NFL Redskins. Quote

Canucks is a misnomer, there are hardly any Canadians on the team. They just traded for an American and a Swede, then drafted a Belarusian, a Finn and two Swedes. TreeBeard Posted September 21, 2021 Report Posted September 21, 2021 Racist epithets of the past are becoming less palatable to the general public and companies/sports franchises are realizing that it is costing them money. Why is that wrong? Quote
