Hey Dougie, I am sorry for the loss of your dad. I understand loosing interest in hockey.

Back in the Yzerman days (I was a Detroit fan), the natural high of watching a game and sometimes attending was the ultimate! Now all my fav players are gone and when I was getting to know some of the new players or really like a player, he'd be gone. I got really frustrated a couple years ago and kinda lost interest. I miss Yzerman and the team spirit. #19 But he is back so who knows what the future will hold.

Well looks like the Red Wings got a good shot at Lafrienere or Byfield, keep on tanking Detroit. If they have the worst season in the salary cap era and miss out on one of those two though, that would be a real kick in nuts, much to my delight.

Thank you for your condolences.

I don't get excited about going to games live anymore neither.

I even have access to Leafs season tickets, but I don't even go, my wife goes with her sister, I have no interest.

For me, the ACC has no feeling to it, I was weaned on the Gardens, the Gardens was connected to the history, the ACC has no meaning to me.

Bill Gatsby next to Bobby Orr and Doug Harvery was the best defenceman in the NHL. That is the only guy for the Red Wings I respect. They are communist Satanists which explains their colour and name an pagan misuse of the angel' wing. Gordie Howe and Ted Lindsay were dirty. The only other exemptions are the BIG M and his brother Peter  who ended up redeemed by being brought to Montreal where they saw the light and will forever be proclaimed Les Glorieux. Also Terry Sawchuck who was in my opinion the best goalie in hockey although some swear by Vezina, Plante, , others.

Not really, like I say, even if the Leafs won the cup, I know it would be an empty feeling.

My father is here on my mantle, but it's not much fun to celebrate with a box of ashes.

The window has closed,  I'm just going through the motions, it's just something to watch on tv

Scotty Bowman has to be the greatest coach ever. I miss the good old days when there were real good hockey players around like Beliveau, Cournoyer, Bobby Orr, Phil Esposito, Clark and and so many more. I use to love the watch the games when Boston came to Montreal for a game. My wife and I would go to those games. I loved it when the Canadians beat Boston's butt. And then there were the Flyers. They were fun to watch also when they came to Montreal. But hockey today has lost my interest. Especially after the Canucks lost out to Boston for the Stanley Cup right here in Vancouver. Two games to win the Cup and they lost both games. The city went crazy over the loss. Riots all over downtown Vancouver.  That is when I finally gave up on hockey. Can you remember who was the goalie that went to Montreal in the seventies and later became a politician? He pretty much covered the whole net. :)

Lidstrom. Also Roy and Hasek. Two of the three played for your Red Wings.

Lol  my Red Wings?  Roy is unmentionable. He put himself before the team so we Habs fans consider him not to exist. We side with Mario Tremblay on that incident. In regards to Hasek he is the one who personally changed hockey for goalies to the flipper style which I do not agree with. I believe stand up goalies were far better at the angles and corners so I lik eBower, Broda, Esposito, Eddie the Eagle, Hall, Giacomin, Crozier, Worsley,  Parent,  Cheevers,Tretiak, Pele Lindbergh for style . Lidstrom of course. Yah of course we Habs fans loved Stevie Y. He was another Dave Keon-Henri Richard-Doug Gilmour kind of guy. Guts and class.

Stand up goalies are far worse, that's why no one plays stand up anymore. Siding with Tremblay lulz, delusional Habs fans are jokes, thanks for Patty Roy you chumps, I appreciate two Stanley Cups you helped my Avs win, you suckers.

They sure did. Absolutely Roy was pivotal as well as the fact you had the two best centres at the time. Of the two who do you like more. Man Forsberg was awesome but I might have to go with your other guy. On a serious note, we have a strong tradition in Montreal you put the team first. Boom Boom Geoffrion,  Guy Lafleur,  were given their buh byes for being too primma donna as well. Roy was a primma donna. You don't do that in Montreal. Not the place for it. Do not blame Mario. Mario was defending a tradition that no one was bigger than the team.  Mario pound for pound was one of the best fighters I ever saw and went from an offensive explosion to defensive specialist on the Habs putting the team first instead of being a one way scorer and getting himself more attention and probably money. He would have pulled Roy but Roy in the middle of the game quit on his fellow players and humiliated them and Tremblay defended their honour. No one but no one in Montreal blamed Tremblay for that fiasco. Roy was a primma donna hot head. Yes he was an excellent goalie but a large ahole as well as was shown after he retired and became an abusive coach. He's a hot head jack ass. Look at your two centres that won the cup for you. That is the example of class acts in hockey. We had our class acts, Cournoyer, Big M, Henri  Richard, Jean Beliveau, Lapointe-Savard-Robinson, Dryden, Gainey, Claude Provost. The Leafs had theirs, Armstrong, Horton, Keon, Bower, Sittler, MacDonald, Clark. Gimmee those kind of  guys anyday. On Detroit you want class acts, Norm Ulman, Alex Delvechio,  Sawchuck, Marcel Pronovost, Paul Henderson, Gary Unger, interesting all the Leaf-Red Wing traded players. I  liked Gary Bergman but he could be dirty. Mickey Redmond I liked to. He had went with  Guy Charon to get the Big M. Redmond would have been another Big M but he had a chronic bad back that cut  his career short which is why Montreal traded him.

As for your Avalanche, your a child. I remember when they were the Rockies and Don Cherry was their coach. Colorado is stoner country. Its like California. Everyone is high.

I'm high as giraffe pussy right now, 31 year old child ftw. Roy was a hot head jerk, sure, but he's also the greatest goalie of all time (or number two), so maybe you shouldn't be so quick to judge based on their personality and little quicker to judge players based on their actual on ice skills, or you end up handing another team a couple of stanley cups to side with a guy whose personality you like more.

You haven't won a cup since, the Curse of Patrick Roy still haunts the Habs to this day. Class acts are great and all, but winning is more important, just win baby. Thanks for embarrassing Roy unnecessarily just because you didn't like him, that worked out real well Montreal. People in Montreal might not have blamed Tremblay, but they should have, there was no good reason not to pull Roy, aside from the coach having a personal grudge against him, and it backfired spectacularly. I'm glad Tremblay was that stupid, it sure paid off for my team in spades.

You should be more concerned as to what Canadian hockey teams will make the playoffs this year? I predict that maybe one or two may make to the first round of the playoffs, and the Stanley Cup will once again stay in America. Canada has crummy losing NHL hockey teams. I guess the reason for that is that Canada has become a crummy country. Canada is lucky if any of their sports teams can beat any other sports team from other countries. There are just too many losers in everything Canadian. The only Cup that is sure to stay in Canada is the Grey Cup. But add a few American teams to the CFL mix, and in time, I am pretty sure that some American team will win the Cup, and take it back to America.

So, seeing that you want to make it appear a though you are an expert on the NHL, what Canadian teams do you see getting into the playoffs, if any of them can at all? Give us a prediction, will ya? I cannot see the Canucks making it to the playoffs. ;)

No. A true Habs fan judges his Habs by what they bring to the team as a whole. He was a primma donna. He was not in the same league as Gump Worsley,  Jacques Plante, George Vezina or Dryden and now Price  for the Habs in terms of leadership and winning. He did not play enough and do as much as they did to warrant respect. Until he apologizes to Mario Tremblay he can kiss my tri-coloured bum bum.I admit he was an excellent goalie but no better than Brodeur or Parent . I also  think had Pele Lindbergh not died he would might have been one of the best .I would take my hat off to  Sawchuck, Tretiak, Hasek, Linbergh, Parent, Tony Esposito, Ken Dryden, Jacques Plante,  Terry Sawchuck in their prime before Roy. Also I think the goalies in the 6 team leagues with no masks were far more skilled. So I have deep respect for the guys I watched growing up, Hall, Crozier, Bower, Worsley, Giacomin, Cheevers-Johnson. No one is in the same league as Sawchuck and from a purely technical perspective, Bernie Parent  and Tretiak to me were the goalies to coach kids to be and before them Plante. I still swear by the Tretiak-Parent=Plante  posture which comes from Plante and Sawchuck  but Sawchuk had one arm was actually longer than the other. Another guy with perfect style was Eddie the Eagle the last of the Plante Parent type goalies and he had no discs in his back and played into his 40's so there is never knowing how good he could have been with a good back. Likewise Mike Palmateer's knees went out before we could properly assess his greatness and Linbergh died in that car cash. If Grant Fuhr had not been an alcoholic he may have been better than he was as well. Brodeur in my opinion is equivalent to Roy and was more of a leader.

Roy I know is considered one of the best but not for me. I measure temperament, leadership qualities. He had no emotional control or leadership qualities. As a Coach-GM he's been a punk who needs his head slapped.

Regards,

Mario Tremblay fan.

You not respecting Roy and thinking they are better is just a laughable emotional position. Your position is not based on accomplishments and skills, but on personality and nostalgia, that is not a proper way to evaluate goaltenders. Who you personally like and don't like clearly effects your judgement to a massive degree, to the point that you undermine your credibility. Evaluating goalies with your heart and not your eyes, that's fools math.

I'm not a huge Roy fan, but lets face it, the guy was a phenomenal goalie.  He invented the modern "butterfly" style.  Every goalie in the last 20 years is copying his style right now.  The guy almost single handedly won 2 cups for Montreal and Trembley is gonna embarrass him and leave him in a game for 9 goals against...yeah, I don't think so.

He was a prime donna. The CH comes first. You want great you need to look back. You do not get it. History.  Go look at some old tapes before the large pads.

The CH haven`t won a cup since they traded him, pissing off Roy hurt your team a helluva lot more than it hurt Roy. Looking at the old tapes will simply cause one to have a greater appreciation for Patrick Roy, not less.

Speaking of old tapes, seriously Y, when comparing goalie styles, and I know its tough comparing eras as the size and speed of the game has changed, check out some of the old tapes to see just how crazy good the old 6 team goalies were and remember that was a time of no masks.

What I want you youngsters to seriously question is the difference in technique. You see in my day you stood to the corner up and choking it with no holes and slid over to the other side and spent hours with a figure skater coach teaching you side to side movement and balance. Today the goalie does down in a wide flipper leaving many holes. The reasoning is in the flayed out flipper he supposedlu  can cover more side to side down low. I disagree. I think more shots are going in on the side holes and over the shoulder with screens this wau  and thus the come back of the up close flick wrist shot and the erosion of the wind up slap shot from outside.

The flipper or pyramid styles gave goalies confidence to come out and cut off long shots at a time of the super wind up slap caused by Bobby Hull curved sticks..but  totally vulnerable inside up front to screen shots, stick side low shots, anything over the shoulder and in the corner.

As a goalie coach I hated seeing pyramid come in. Tony Esposito and Bruce Gamble were the only two I saw do it well. Then Hasek reinvented it coming down lower until I forget his name but not Patrick Roy but Roy's coach a Quebecer then perfected the splay legged flipper style. Don't credit Roy credit his coach and help me out his name slips me he coached the goalies in Toronto. Hasek really took the pyramid to the level before it was readapted to Roy. Hasek's style ushered in the era of groin pulls the legacy of this style which is  a problem to this day but superior stretching techniques to help and while the groin is now most injured, the back lasts longer then the old style stand up with was murder on the   lower spinal cord.

Sorry but you ask me Jacques Plantes and Vladimir Tretiak's goal coaching was far more beneficial to their proteges. Look at Eddie the Eagle, Bernie Parent, In their day the best at the top of their game. Flawless in angle cutting and lateral movement. Also please do take note of Plante, Eddie Johnson, Cheevers, Sawchuck, Giacomin, Hall, Crozier, Johny Bower, Gilles Villmeures, Worsley, Vachon as flawless styles. Flawless technique. Very few bad  goals.

Tony Espo, always let  in stuff over the shoulder. Gamble did not have a glove or blocker but was good sprawling.

Nah you can't tell me today's style is better than the Plante-Sawchuck-Eddie the Eagle-Parent style.

Today's goalie now has to be over 6 feet, and immobilizes their bottom half going into the flipper. They allow far to many over the shoulder and side pocket goals. They can cover lateral side to side up front if not screened but otherwise flick wrists put it in over their shoulders every time.

Don't like it. It's based on the law of averages that the puck is more likely to hit your chest than you stopping it.  Its epitomized by Carey Price.  I don't like it. In the old days goalies challenged you to shoot at their weak sides then robbed you blind. Watch how many times they could do the splits or zap it out to one side with both legs.

Watch the difference in how they used their blocker and shoulders to stop pucks and never did you see a puck between the legs like you see today.

Last guy I coached everyone laughed at. They wanted him playing flipper and he loved the way I taught him to stand. He made it to college before he became a dentist.

Flippers are for seals damn it. Also don't get me going on stick handling. No one can do it. I do like the come back of the wrist shot. Rick McLeish had a great one until these days. Now I see that stoner on the Leafs Mathews has a great wrist shot. Someone take the joint out of his mouth. He is the Keannu Reeves of hockey man. Surfer dude player man. He need bucket of ice water over his head. Wake up dude. Soft. These guys are too soft damn it.

It is not difficult to judge old goalies as worse, because you can see they give up far more bad goals being completely out of position, and blaming that solely on the equipment is just silly. Goalies have gotten a lot better, it's not just the equipment, they actually understand angles and positioning now, the old timers didn't have a clue. They'd either get beat on deke being way out of the net, or bite on a shot that left them way out position for a long distance shot, Gretzky was a master at exploiting this until they wised up. They looked like fish out of water, flopping around like Magikarp, if you actually examine the tape, this trend is not hard to see, stop letting nostalgia blind you.
