The only outlier since 1972, is Obama beating Clinton, and that's because he was Obama, there is a reason no one else has done it. His time has passed to become POTUS, that window was 2008, unfortunately he ran into stiff competition in the primary instead of a weak field, but he would have beaten McCain or Romney if he had won the primary. Running against incumbent Trump is not a good opportunity. Don't think he would have beat HW Bush in 1988 either, he would have done better than Dukakis though, that was a pretty bad screw up on his part, even though he still would have lost. The whole point of this impeachment process is to soil Trump's name so that whoever runs for the Demos can look like a new and clean alternative. Biden is to closely attached to the very dirt Trump is attached to. They are the same, old and dirty. The Demos need someone they can pass as clean which in this day and age may be tough. Its still time to bring in another Senator or Governor for the Dems. The Reps have decided to go with Trump which I think is a strategic mistake but they believe if they do not back him they are toast because it admits they supported a corrupt idiot for the last 4 YEARS and let him. The Reps want him beat by a Demo and have the smell drift away until they can put back in an alternative. You will not see anyone in the Senate go after Biden the same way they won't go after Trump. That Senate was Biden's playground. He is owed more cover up favours that anyone. Mitch MacOnell is his buddy. Right now the Demos have no one who could beat Trump. Warren's medicare issue would be considered Communist to mid America. Kamila Harris the black Hilary Clinton is hated by Biden and he has enough clout to sabotage her so I do not know who else is left to come up the middle.
