taxme Posted June 27, 2018 Report Posted June 27, 2018 I am not all up on how the markets work but can anyone here tell me as to why the Canadian dollar is so low compared to the American dollar today. The last I saw it was down to $75.24 which is a far cry from what it was a little over a year ago when the Canadian dollar was above par by a few pennies. I do not need a lengthy explanation. Just something short and sweet and simple for this simple guy. Thank you. Quote

Personally though, I think that it has more to do with how our dear leaders waste our tax dollars and keep putting Canadians deeper in debt rather than with the markets. Aw well, there will be no holidays be taken in the states until the dollar at least reaches $80 cents. LOL. Quote

According to my Russian troll manual, courtesy of Jimwd, it says here that the demand for fascist products are high and universal sadness is down. This caused a huge trade imbalance with Canada as their production line of sadness is over supplying, creating an abundance of sadness in Canada. If Canada can stop producing sadness and start adopting fascism you will see the exchange rate reach parity. 2 Quote
bush_cheney2004 Posted June 28, 2018 Report Posted June 28, 2018 Nothing new about the Canadian peso...errrr...dollar sinking to new lows. Low oil prices hammered the loonie and other commodities are not doing much better. An economy/currency which depends on raw materials exports is going to be impacted biggly by such things. And then there is Trump ! Good time to short the CAD..... Quote Economics trumps Virtue.
Queenmandy85 Posted June 28, 2018 Report Posted June 28, 2018 Just to set the record straight, the Canadian dollar has been below par for over five years. Quote A Conservative stands for God, King and Country

Along with that sadness our dear leader also always loves to apologize every chance he gets to some minority. I am pretty sure that all helps to create new jobs, eh? LOL. What Canada needs is business leader politicians like Trump and not the liberal socialist crybaby like Trudeau leaders that we have had for decades now. If we had business leaders here in Canada who wanted to create more jobs and less socialism/multiculturalism jobs we could have a dollar at par or maybe even better. I am dam sure that it is our liberal, socialist, communist leaders who are responsible for this low dollar. But will the conservative party be any better? Only time will tell and they must win the next election for us to find out. Another five years of Trudeau and the dollar will be worse than the peso. Quote

It is a great time for all Americans to start buying Canada up. Maybe that then could help the Canadian dollar to rise. Hey, you never know, eh? Quote

cannuck Posted June 29, 2018 Report Posted June 29, 2018 What makes you think a low Loonie is in any way a bad thing? Oh...because it costs you more to buy Yankee and Euro crap that is not made in Canada. Well, here's a news flash: it is not made in Canada because you buy the Yankee and Euro (and Chinese) crap. Canada exports resources (the old drawer of water) and even makes a bit of stuff (hewer of weed...er, I meant WOOD), but by and large, we have followed in the US footsteps and convinced ourselves that we can live on nothing but speculative transactions and resource sales. Fact is, the big wealth is created by adding VALUE to our resources (hewing the wood), while selling the resource is just taking value out of our "bank" and doing speculative crap creates absolutely nothing but does a fine job of redistributing wealth to those who really don't need or deserve it. We have lost the ability to understand and execute investment in Main Street altogether. The lower the Loonie goes, the greater the incentive to go back to work and build for domestic and export markets. Which party is in power has pretty much NOTHING to do with it. 1 Quote
Hates politicians Posted June 29, 2018 Report Posted June 29, 2018 Politicians manipulate it so that it's cheap for the u.s to buy our stuff. We need to go back to the gold standard so we as canadian's don't get raped over nothing Quote
August1991 Posted July 18, 2018 Report Posted July 18, 2018 The Cdn dollar is not low; it is the US dollar that is high. Now, why is the US$ high? Dunno. Maybe oil, and a return to US equity markets. If you were a Martian and you owned a delivery van but had no driver's license, in what country in the world would you put the truck to generate the highest income for you? Quote

Just something short and sweet and simple for this simple guy. Thank you. The Canadian dollar's value started its decline with the collapse in global oil prices in 2014. For a few years following the 2008/09 recession its higher value had been sustained mainly by high energy prices to the extent that some considered it a "petrocurrency". The current irony is that Trump's threats and policies, including tariffs, are driving down the currencies of many of America's trading partners, which has the effect of undermining his tariff strategy. The Canadian dollar should have started picking up steam as energy prices increased over the past year but this hasn't happened. So, Canadian exporters are benefiting from a Trump buffer, so to speak. On another note, according to recently released stats, Canadian travel to the U.S. hasn't declined but has in fact picked up over the past year. American prices for many products and services are generally low in comparison to Canadian prices, compensating to a significant extent for our discounted currency. Quote

I guess that all Canadians travelling to the USA have given up on their Canadian peso and have conceded that they will just have to pay and add another 30% to the cost of their travels to the USA. It's the cost that one has to pay for living. Aw well. Quote
