Muslim Employee of Kosher Market in Paris Praised for Hiding Customers From Gunman (link)

This act of heroism was highlighted recently after the Nice truck massacre (link to article). I had been aware of the heroics. The hero, Lassana Bathily, 24, was brought to Washington in June 2015 to speak before the American Jewish Committee. I attended his stirring speech, which was highlighted by the leading Jewish advocacy organization.. I first learned on reading the article linked at the top of this post that he was properly granted French citizenship in recognition of this courage. What Mr. Bathily did was to hide intended victims of the slaughter in a meat freezer until it was safe for them to emerge.

By so doing he placed himself in immediate and long-term peril. Murderers become well-known; not the quiet, decent people that make civilized life possible.

  • The mantra of "world opinion" or the views of the "international community" betrays flabby and weak reasoning (link).

Some people are courageous and compassionate, and some are not, regardless of ideology, religion, culture or skin colour. :)

I agree with everything you say except for your mis-spelling of the word "color."

Colour is the proper English and Canadian spelling.

I tried to convince my children that "Canadian" was another language. Didn't work too well, even when they were 11 and almost 10.

There are a lot of examples of dumbing down the english language for americans.

Just like there were Germans who courageously risked their own lives, hiding Jews from the Nazis.

What was your point Besty? Do you have one?

JBG's point is that there are good people in all nationalities and religions. What is yours? Why the focus on Germans and not Dutch, French, Polish, Norweigans Czechs, Hungarians who did the same hmmmm? You have a point in selecting Germans?

Your point?

You got something else you want to say?

The hero is a Muslim! The terrorist is a Muslim.

Why focus on Nazis and Germans? What do you think? You don't get it? The parallel's lost on you?

I don't even know what your problem is with using Germans for an example! Are you German?

Why? Maybe, because I just saw Schindler's List? Defiance? The Pianist?

Why this over-sensitivity?

Geee.......talk about whatever-it-is-that-sets-people-off...... <scratching head>

Sweden is the rape capital if Europe. Guess who’s being raped?

The same day the Arab young boy was found drowned on the beach in Greece, an elderly couple was knifed to death in a home invasion in Italy by an Eritrean migrant.

Guess which incident got worldwide attention?

Swedish rape statistics are not comparable to other nations. Let's look at the words of a criminologist at Stockholm University. Since some xenophobes have trouble with geography, that's the capital of Sweden.

“What we’re hearing is a very, very extreme exaggeration based on a few isolated events, and the claim that it’s related to immigration is more or less not true at all,” says Jerzy Sarnecki, a criminologist at Stockholm University who has devoted his career to the study of criminality, ethnicity and age. LINK

Exaggerated? What does he mean? Sweden clearly reports more rapes than any other country. That's data! And data is truth!

Yes. Sweden does have more sexual assaults. Sweden also reports sexual assaults very differently than other countries, which is why their statistics are not comparable with other countries. In 2005, Sweden's Social Democrats (think a further left version of the NDP) introduced new sex-crime legislation. Sweden has the broadest definition of rape in the world now.

Here's the example from the article I linked above. Say your boss rubbed up against you in an unwanted way at work every week for a year. In Canada, you would have a sexual assault case, that is one sexual assault case. In Germany, this would be zero cases of sexual assault. In Sweden, this is 52 separate cases of sexual assault. The author expands the illustration, "if you had half a dozen sex acts with your spouse, then later felt you did not give consent, in Sweden this is classified as six cases of rape."

The massive increase in the cases of sexual assault in Sweden that the alt-right blogosphere likes to correlate with the increase in Muslim immigration is entirely attributable to changes in the law. By Sweden's old definition of sexual assault, they do not have more rapes. The correlation between Muslim immigration and increased rapes is not because Muslims are going around raping everything with a pulse. It's a false correlation. The increase in rapes is a result of the broadening of the legal definition of rape in Sweden, not to due increased incidents.

The criminologist in Stockholm also points out that the victims of these crimes are almost entirely foreigners as well, as opposed to the ridiculous narrative that Muslims are invading Sweden and preying on Swedish women.

More importantly, there is a strong connection between poverty and crime. Sweden does not let refugees out of "displaced persons camps" in order to find work sometimes for years. They are stuck in miserable, welfare-dependent camps. In these awful conditions, the refugees themselves become victims of crimes and economic exclusion that most of the people here can only try to imagine. The same was true for displaced people after World War 2. Once the war ended, people were still subject to atrocities living in these camps.

So next time you decide to bring up Sweden as the rape capital of Europe (the world actually) and you ask who is being raped, maybe delve a little deeper into the statistics and legal context than what the zealots in the conservative blogosphere feed you.

In the 70's Sweden was probably the best country in the world; a paradise on earth. Since then they have managed to ruin and spoil it.
