There is currently a private members bill in its third reading which would change the wording of our national anthem:

The current line reads:

“In all thy sons command.”

This would be changed to:

“In all of us command”

Good idea or bad idea?

I am so excited they have spent several scarce days of time in the Commons debating this subject, which is of the utmost national importance.

I used to be opposed to changing it. I hated it when they made the previous changes when I was a kid. But I now know that the anthem has been changed MANY times, and that the original version was gender neutral. So now I no longer care either way about the lyrics.

Politically though, I do find it interesting. The Conservatives proposed this same change in 2010, but when public sentiment was shown to be opposed to the change, they responded to the will of the people and dropped it.

But now the Cons are evil bastards who are breaking the heart of the doomed and ill MP who has brought the bill to the floor.

They only interrupt their eating of live puppies in the Commons cafeteria long enough to come the the Commons and heckle the guy in the wheelchair.

I remember in elementary school, long before my mind was corrupted by the femnazis of higher education, I used to feel odd singing that verse. I don't know why, but it just felt wrong.

Maybe I was a precocious femnazi, or maybe excluding half the population from their 'true patriotism' is innately wrong.

Whatever caused me to feel that way, I support the change.

Change "God keep our land" to "Humans keep our land".

Change "Il sait porter la croix" to "Nous portons quoi nous voulons porter".

Change "Et ta valeur, de foi trempée" to "Et ta valeur, de liberté trempée".

Go ahead and change the lyrics. I'm sure women will suddenly feel more "included" and their lives will change drastically for the better.

How about: Don't change the lyrics, because men will be angered and feel left out?

Nobody really cares.

What about the rest of the cheesy, sexist, religious lyrics ? God must be very popular in Canada !

O Canada! Where pines and maples grow.

Great prairies spread and lordly rivers flow.

How dear to us thy broad domain, From East to Western sea.

Thou land of hope for all who toil! Thou True North, strong and free!

Chorus:

God keep our land glorious and free!

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada! Beneath thy shining skies

May stalwart sons, and gentle maidens rise,

To keep thee steadfast through the years From East to Western sea.

Our own beloved native land! Our True North, strong and free!

Chorus

Ruler supreme, who hearest humble prayer,

Hold our Dominion in thy loving care;

Help us to find, O God, in thee

A lasting, rich reward, As waiting for the better Day,

We ever stand on guard.

Chorus

I think that the Conservatives just shot themselves in the foot. MP Belanger, is the back bencher who authored the private members bill to make the gender change. The legislature was asked to pass it by unanimous consent but the Conservatives refused which means Belanger will have to show up or the bill dies (just like Belanger). There is no question that the legislation will eventually pass if the bill has to be shifted around.

The way things sit now, because of the move by the Conservatives, Belanger is going to be wheeled into legislature on a stretcher, hooked up with his IV's, and get the vote done. Meanwhile, the female Conservatives will be forced to stand to vote for or against this change. What will those female Conservative MP's explain to their female constituents when they vote against our national anthem becoming gender neutral?

This move just does not make any sense to me. Time for Rona to get together with her party members and have a serious talk.

No it is time for Canadians to have a talk with all our politicians , about wasting valuable time in parliament on issues that do nothing for this nation, or it's people.

When our nation has so many serious issues to contend to....But nobody wants to tackle them because it might loose them some support or offend someone, some where....

There should be someone who vets all this bills, and when a bill comes in like this one, that person should be loaded on a catapult and flung out to sea. we could broad cast it on national media...so all the good idea fairies out there will get the picture......

We as tax payers pay these people very good money to run this nation, and show the leadership required to do so.....and when all the major issues are handled then we can on with changing the cross walk signs because they are not gender friendly, or the signs on the bathrooms because they are not gender friendly.....How about we tackle health care issues, or education....the list goes on and on....but shit they won't pad a resume like I changed a word in our national anthem will they....

We, the willing, led by the unknowing, are doing the impossible for the ungrateful. We have now done so much for so long with so little, we are now capable of doing anything with nothing.

Agreed. There are more pressing issues. They should just change the damn thing. No consultation or debate required.

On what basis do you think Rona Ambrose supports an anthem change?

Believe it or not, it's possible for women to be conservatives.

The majority of women in Saudi Arabia support the ban on women driving.

How about we tackle health care issues, or education....

Those are provincial issues.

Are you saying there is no federal responsibilities in either by the federal government.....why do we have health and education ministers then....why do we have a national medical care system.....why are there so much transferred tax payers dollars....

We don't have a national health care system. Each province runs their own. The provinces are responsible for providing health care to individuals under the principles of the Canada Health Act. The tax transfer is from individual taxpayers to the federal govt, then back to the provinces, then back to the individuals. I wonder at the efficiency of all that.

There is no MInister of Education at the federal level, and I join you in wondering at the role of the Minister of Health. The department has some agencies for specific tasks, and provides medical care to indigenous people. All those indigenous people live in provinces or territories, which all have their own systems. I am not sure why it is necessary to duplicate that administrative task with a department of some 12,000 staff and nearly $4 billion annually in expense.

Change "God keep our land" to "Humans keep our land".

That sounds inane and idiotic.

Belanger's medical problems have nothing to do with changing the anthem. If the people don't want it, why should we change it simply because he's sick?

So does God keep our land...

Exactly.

The anthem changed to be sexist and religious. It can change back.

From Wikipedia.com:

Weir's original lyrics from 1908 contained no religious references and used the phrase "thou dost in us command" before they were changed by Weir in 1914 to read "in all thy sons command".[1][9][10][11] In 1926, a fourth verse of a religious nature was added.[12]

So does God keep our land...

No, there's nothing about it that sounds wrong, especially given the history of this country. And I'm particularly religious.

Particularly or not particularly?

It is extremely silly to ask a fictional supernatural being to keep our land glorious and free. Might as well ask Superman.
