OTTAWA — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Hunter Tootoo is stepping down as minister of Fisheries and Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, and also leaving the Liberal caucus.

“Mr. Tootoo will be taking time to seek treatment for addiction issues,” said Trudeau in a statement.

In October, Tootoo defeated incumbent Conservative Leona Aglukkaq to become the Member of Parliament for Nunavut.

This to bad and I hope he gets cleaned up. We all know someone that has had troubles. BUT why did he get dumped and no support from the PM . When Liberal MP Seamus O'Regan had some issues with addiction, trudeau reaped praise on him and support for his friend and colleague, but with this minister the PM said nothing and he is gone even from caucus. What happened to cause this?

What are you even on about? How do you know he's getting no support from the PM? How do you know it wasn't Tootoo's choice to leave caucus? You make a lot of silly assumptions.

Trudeau went out of his way to support Seamus, but nothing public for Tootoo. Just wondering.

Trudeau released a statement. Tootoo is asking for privacy. That's all there is to it.

Now let me be the first to point something out. If this guy is resigning over his alcoholism now he was almost certaintly an alcoholic when he was appointed. Why did Trudeau appoint an alcoholic to the cabinet? Did he lie when he was questioned or was the background check inadequate. Or did they know he was an alcoholic?

And don't give me any crap about my only criticizing this because I'm a conservative. I've criticized Harper for his appointments on many occasions. In fact, I think I once wrote that they needed to find out who was advising him on appointments and have them shot.

Trudeau did say that he wanted a Cabinet that represented Canada lol. I guess we need a few alcoholics and about 50% of them should smoke weed too.

It would be illegal to ask questions about that unless they are specifically related to the job. You cannot ask a perspective employee if they drink... or if they're married, or when they were born. And you most certainly cannot ask them if they have been diagnosed with alcoholism unless there is a specific and direct connection with the job you are hiring them to do.

I question things because I am human. And call no one my father who's no closer than a stranger

As far as I know, dre, this would apply to prospective employees under public service employment legislation (such as the federal Public Service Employment Act). I would add prospective federal employees who have received a pardon for past criminal convictions don't have to divulge such convictions when they apply for a position. My question would be, would these conditions also apply to political appointees? Would scrutiny related to these matters form part of the vetting process?

He is not an employee, he is an elected representative. And btw, we don't know it's alcohol. Now that I've seen Trudeau's brief statement its' "addiction". I think if it was alcohol they'd have said alcohol, so we can assume it's likely drugs of some kind. Trudeau also said he was resigning after a "difficult situation". What difficult situation? I think the voters have a right to know what their MP is addicted to before they vote for them again.

I was skimming the political panels tonight and their attitude is that there's something wrong with this, that the news clampdown has been too strong and the information is too scanty as compared to previous such cases. They also felt that people have a right to know what this guy is addicted to and what the 'difficult situation' was which prompted him to quit the Liberal caucus.

what the 'difficult situation' was which prompted him to quit the Liberal caucus.

My guess is a loyal Liberal was harmed by his excesses (e.g. physical or sexual assault). Seeking treatment and leaving caucus was the compromise in return for the loyal Liberal's silence. I would also assume the assault was minor enough that this was considered a viable option and more likely physical than sexual unless the Liberals are complete hypocrites. Edited by TimG

His family has a history with alcohol (see Jordan Tootoo) and he was a noted piss-tank when he was in territorial politics.....not too many drug addicts, outside of huffing gas, in Nunavut.

Trudeau also said he was resigning after a "difficult situation". What difficult situation?

The rumor I heard, suggested there was some unusual grab-ass and hanky-panky at the Liberal convention in Winnipeg......who knows, there is certainly something rotten in Denmark......how else can one explain the differing reactions by Trudeau to this and O'Regan earlier this year?

I didn't hear anything to suggest anything violent, but more along the lines of marriages ending.

I am saying there had to be a serious incident that triggered the resignation. Your guess is no better than mine.

My "guess" comes from a CPC observer at the convention........rumor? Sure, but then smoke=fire.

I think the last 7 months of government is adequate evidence that a significant portion of cabinet must be doing a lot of drugs.

I'm sure the media will find out the big secret but, it may be his drinking got out of control, IF its drinking, due to the pressure of being minister, and since he's gone, its none of our business.

why is your appetite not satisfied with the "addiction" reason? How would knowing the precise addiction make you any more satisfied... how would/why it be any more meaningful to you?

Good luck to him. Maybe some time in rehab, time with family, time away from Ottawa will be helpful, and he might be back in Cabinet at some point. At the risk of being culturally insensitive, Tootoo has lived and worked in the North for pretty much his whole life. All his former political career in Nunavut has been more or less nonpartisan, that is how they do things there. The culture shock of the brutally partisan Commons and Ottawa daily life might be a bit much, and he is far removed from the support of community. I wish him a speedy recovery.

IMO It is more then the addiction. Trudeau being so upset, tells me a women was involved.

I don't get where you see "Trudeau being so upset." He made a blunt announcement and stated that resigning from cabinet and caucus was Tootoo's choice and he also asked for his privacy right now. So why would Trudeau go around talking at length about the situation? He's respecting the guy's wishes.

Like I said earlier, what he said about sean compared to hunter.
