bush_cheney2004 Posted February 9, 2016 Report Posted February 9, 2016 Discuss what will happen in the 2016 U.S. presidential election party caucuses/primaries in the palmetto state, South Carolina. Will there be separation and resignations as political and financial reality sets in for trailing candidates ? Or will a new front-runner emerge, making for an even more dynamic campaign ? Rather than start a new topic for each U.S. state primary and caucus, perhaps all threads should be combined into one big star spangled U.S. presidential election thread. It's so exciting ! I think tonight's results will decide who moves on......I think Carson and Christie are on thin ice and could be gone after tonight, likewise Kasich if he doesn't finish in the top three.....Bush will move on regardless, his bank account mirrors a small nation, and I can't see him (or Rubio) giving up before Florida. Shady Posted February 10, 2016 Report Posted February 10, 2016 Hillary's fire wall is SC. Nobody in the Republicans should be moving on other than Trump, Rubio, Cruz, and Bush. Kasich is a decent guy, but he practically lived in New Hampshire for the last 4 months and only got 16%, mostly due to Rubio's weak debate performance. There's not a state Kasich will do well in until Ohio in late March I think. He's a one trick pony. Quote

There's not a state Kasich will do well in until Ohio in late March I think. He's a one trick pony. Though I don't honestly see, as of yet, a path for him to the White House, Kasich could pinch some of the Northern and Mid-West States on Super Tuesday, if he receives enough money now to continue on.........if he were to win a handful of States, he could very much so be in position toplay king-maker at the convention. Big Guy Posted February 10, 2016 Report Posted February 10, 2016 I see on TV that people have started taking notice of Kasich. His second place has drawn media coverage and will greatly help him and his campaign. During interviews, Kasich comes across as an intelligent, common sense potential president and the only candidate who appears to know what he is talking about on the Republican side. I can see the Christie and Fiorina people going to him. I believe that it will be Kasich and Rubio who will battle it out at the nominating convention with Kasich winning out. Quote Note - For those expecting a response from Big Guy: I generally do not read or respond to posts longer then 300 words nor to parsed comments.
Derek 2.0 Posted February 11, 2016 Report Posted February 11, 2016 I believe that it will be Kasich and Rubio who will battle it out at the nominating convention with Kasich winning out. As much as I like Kasich, even suggesting him as a potential VP before he entered the race, he doesn't have the support among Southern/Texan Republicans to win the nomination.....that's not to say he's not spoiling for the bottom half of the ticket though. The Republicans have never won the White House without the support of Ohio, so I expect the remaining GOP runners to treat Kasich with reserved respect. ---------- Going into South Carolina, its two separate races......Trump vs. Cruz and Bush vs. Rubio vs. Kasich. I expect Trump and Cruz to both finish in the top three, followed by one of Rubio and Bush, both of which have solid ground games in the State, a South Carolina Senator supporting each and an even split of congressmen.......it sounds as if George W Bush is going to stump for his brother, which could be a game changer is South Carolina, as "W" is very popular (still) in the State (and South), likewise, what could seal the deal for Bush (or a Rubio and Cruz) is a Gov. Haley endorsement.... If Bush finishes in the top three in South Carolina, I'd expect him to be in a good position going into Super Tuesday.......if he wins South Carolina, or finishes 2nd behind Cruz (not Trump), that might be it for Rubio and Kasich. Moreover, Democrats are in Nevada while Republicans are in SC. With Christie/Fiora out, it's about Jeb, Kasich (Who?), Rubio vs Trump/Cruz - according to the MSM. The Republicans don't have superdelegates (like Democrats) but at this point, I can see a Bush III/Christie ticket. My prediction now: Cruz in SC (not Trump) and then Bush III on Super Tuesday. August1991 Posted February 11, 2016 Report Posted February 11, 2016 (edited) What reason could you possibly have to think that either Jeb Bush or Chris Christie still have a pulse at this point? -k Because Jeb! is alive after NH, and SC will kill Trump. Moreover, Christie put the stake in Rubio for the benefit of Bush III. But heck, what do I know. I liked Walker. ======= Until now, it has been provincial politics. (Kasich should run for premier of New Brunswick.) Beyond Iowa, NH, SC or Nevada, there are three questions: air game, delegates take all, who can beat the opposing Democrat/Republican candidate in Fall 2016? I reckon that Democrats may, 1972 style, choose Sanders - another McGovern. Edited February 11, 2016 by August1991 Quote
Derek 2.0 Posted February 11, 2016 Report Posted February 11, 2016 My prediction now: Cruz in SC (not Trump) and then Bush III on Super Tuesday. I can see it.....there are a lot of evangelicals in South Carolina, that like Iowa, should flock to Cruz (more so now that Carson in a non-factor)......With Bush, I think a 2nd or 3rd place with Trump in the other spot.......nearly 25-30% of South Carolina are serving or retired military, which tend to support the Bush brand, and I think will be skeptical of Trump. Derek 2.0 Posted February 11, 2016 Report Posted February 11, 2016 (edited) What reason could you possibly have to think that either Jeb Bush or Chris Christie still have a pulse at this point? -k The Bush family's network in the State.......The one good thing Trump has done for Jeb, is that with his constant attacks on the family (name), he's allowed Jeb to stop running away from his name (which I think was one of his biggest mistakes from the start)........His 90 year old mother going to New Hampshire brought a tiny bit of life back into his campaign (and maybe some backbone into Jeb, based on the last debate)........"W" will be stumping for Jeb in South Carolina (W has already released a TV/radio add)........"W" is still very popular in the State and the South...... The South Carolina primary could very well be Jeb's Fort Sumter.....in that he loses the State to Cruz and/or Trump, but it becomes a rally cry for moderates/mainstream going into Super Tuesday.... Derek 2.0 Posted February 12, 2016 Report Posted February 12, 2016 Hilarious......Cruz launches new adds calling Trump sleazy, then has to pull his own adds, directed at Rubio, after it was found out one of the actresses was a porn star I still think both Trump and Cruz will finish in the top three, but its going to be nasty........can't wait for the debates on Saturday. bush_cheney2004 Posted February 12, 2016 Author Report Posted February 12, 2016 (edited) There is no "Newt" this time around for SC, so it will mostly be a test for how much Bush love is left. Nobody will run away with it. I lived in Charleston for a few years back in the early 80's to run patrols out of King's Bay, and the military demographic is large near the coast. Not sure how that translates to this group. Edited February 12, 2016 by bush_cheney2004 Quote Economics trumps Virtue.

I lived in Charleston for a few years back in the early 80's to run patrols out of King's Bay, and the military demographic is large near the coast. Not sure how that translates to this group. Bush has a cadre of retired flag officers in his camp, in addition Senator and recently retired colonel Lindsay Graham and big brother stumping for him among vets. Derek 2.0 Posted February 17, 2016 Report Posted February 17, 2016 Sounds like South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley is about to endorse Marco Rubio, who's currently polling 2nd-3rd in South Carolina......If Rubio gets a strong 2nd, that should be it for Bush...........Of the mainstream field, in my opinion, Rubio is in the best position to steal some of Cruz's support and beat Trump.......in polling against Clinton, Rubio, unlike Trump, wins in a general election. As a Yankee (northerner), I learned a lot about the history and importance of Dixie while stationed in Virginia, South Carolina, and Florida. Very important part of American character and identity, including/despite slavery and segregation. Trump has a superficial appeal and advantage because of his role in popular television media and development, but I would agree that a brash talker from Queens NY is not the best obvious fit for SC's GOP vote. The Bushes are carpetbaggers too, but they have some history in Florida and Texas, and didn't talk down to southerners. Could be a push....
