It's all about those pensions being changed. People are going to say it's foreshadowing a Conservative loss, but that would be wrong in this case. Baird and MacKay are both leaving so they can secure the old pension plans and not face the new restrictions.

Yes, your right and I wonder if Harper will really give up 2 million of his, like he said he would....probably not, the media should ask him.

You think he might leave too? :D

Wouldn't it be ironic if the Harper government is taken down by their own greed to avoid their own pension cutbacks!!

Harper would give up $2 million to stay in power. That's far more important to him than money.

Do you think he would stay if he only had a minority government and he will have many new MPs, so he may be lucky to get a minority because I saw on one of the polls that some Tories are moving over to the NDP and I think it was in Quebec but not sure where.

It's just my opinion, but I think he would stay in a minority situation and try to paint any attempts at a coalition as undemocratic. He did that already in the past.

If he lost to a minority NDP government, I think he would try to form a coalition with the Liberals to "save Canada from the socialists."

If he loses to a minority Liberal government, I think he tries to bring down the Liberals with the NDP's help as soon as possible but would not form a coalition with them.

What restrictions? I thought the pension changes would just force MPs to contribute a little more of their own cash.

If MacKay hangs around he won't collect his parliamentary pension at 55. He will have to wait until he is 60. Expect more to leave as a result.

Expecting a second child and being relatively recently married seems to be a good reason for exiting politics. Not everyone is a politician for like. He's accomplished just about everything he set out to do - and contrary to media speculation, I doubt he was ever going to consider running for the leadership given his new family. He's proven to be a pretty nice guy - good luck to him.

I believe that this is just another step in the MacKay plan for a political future. He has been a political animal weaned in a political household.

My expectation is that after the next election, the Harper Conservatives will not have a majority - they will either be a minority or in opposition of a Liberal minority government. This would result in Harper retiring and a leadership race in the Conservative Party. There will be a movement to bring it back closer to the center and the old Progressive Conservative Peter MacKay (he was leader at one time) led Party.

At that point MacKay will reappear as a candidate without the defeat at the polls as a negative. Prentice will be back into the running as may Baird - although I do not think a gay individual can yet be elected PM in Canada. There will be at least a 3 man race - with a dark horse coming out of Quebec.

And the new leader of the (now center-right) Conservative Party will be ..... Jean Charest!!!

You heard it first here!

Not everyone is a politician for life, but the former leader of the Progressive Conservatives and a front runner in the leadership race that put Harper in is a lifer if there ever was one.

What this says IMO is that Harper isn't going anywhere any time soon as CPC leader. MacKay would be one of the contenders to replace Harper. Maybe he sees no path to CPC leadership in the foreseeable future? Maybe we'll see the man run for office again when a path to being PM presents itself?

Big loss for the party, though not much of a loss in my opinion, good riddance. David Orchard sends his regards!

That would definitely be Very Ironic, It's even funnier to think it's actually a possibility.

Wow, where are all the usual suspects?

Is this rats abandoning a sinking ship?

At the rate it's sinking it will be a other 40 year of Harper government.

The conservatives can't lose as long as the left splits the vote.

The left should invest into making a decoy far right party. ?

You heard it first here!

And probably the last.

Just heard from a source that polling in NS shows that McKay would lose his own seat.

Too many f ups and not enough pin ups.

Y'all have the far right, the tea partyiers, in your tent. Without them there'd be no Conservative party at all.

You really are such inclusive folk. And Harper is the perfect PM for y'all.

MacKay can read polls like everyone else. EKOS has the Conservatives at 17% support in Atlantic Canada, which likely means the loss of many seats. A friend in the polling business claims this 17% figure is in free-fall.

The description of rats fleeing the floundering ship is an accurate one. With Baird, Flaherty, Prentice and now MacKay history, the Tory front bench consists of wannabe lightweights.

To be honest I've always voted Center, Which is liberal isn't it not?

Legalizing pot is steering a little to far left to my liking though.
