Harper has cut off all social assistance to all Indigenous people living on 'reserves' in BC ... including welfare and disability support?

They only reason these bands even entertain the idea of rejecting a billion dollars in resource revenue is because they think the Canadian taxpayer sugar daddy will keep paying the bills. I don't see why it should. If they have an opportunity to support themselves with revenues from the traditional lands then they should be expected to take those opportunities if they want continued taxpayer support. bc-first-nations-lose-federal-social-funding

Am I reading this right?

Harper has cut off all social assistance to all Indigenous people living on 'reserves' in BC ... including welfare and disability support?

With no explanation at all?

And his minion Minister Valcourt refuses to answer any questions about it at all?

.

What treaties give these FN the right to social funding. It was my understanding their are few treaties in place in BC.

Time for them to make it on their own. I am sick and tired of handing billions over to them to piss against the wall and then whine about being broke. Enough is enough.

I agree. They should be the one's taking about sharing their resources royalties and profits with Ottawa instead of the other way around.

Canada has had it way too easy for way to long. It's sense of entitlement is over the top and out of control.

No wonder 1st Nations are getting fed up.

They want more money from resources ,fine. But that is it. And for them to have so called powers to say no to a project is going a little to far.

Why wouldn't they have some serious input to what happens on their land?

Turn it around. I decide I'm going to drill a gas well in your back yard without permission, discussion or compensation.

You wouldn't have a problem with that, because that is what you expect from people with brown skin.

Science too hard for you? Try religion!

And if a billion dollars of compensation was offered because the land was needed to build a port? Is a reasonable to turn it down then? Or would you expect the government to simple expropriate the land because the need to develop transportation infrastructure trumps individual land rights?

Off reserve social assistance is a provincial responsibility.

Well I am sure the Indians would not mind you white people just give them back their land and go back to your country. And I don't think they'd care if you "took everything you brought here". Without the Indians there'd be no BC and no country, they should get the same amount of funding as any other people. And if they don't want to destroy the little fraction of land that they are given when they are entitled to far much more land legally because white man stole their land, then why don't the whites give them back all the land they stole and call crown land, and then cut off the indians and the indians can decide what they want to do.

If anything, the royalties in the oilsands should be going to indians, not edmonton and ottawa.

Why? Don't forget you do have a planet you're indigenous to.

As far as I'm concerned us Earthlings were here first.

That's nice and all, but in grownup land, there are laws and constitutions that need to be followed. It's how we organize ourselves.

Every single individual nation that was born had to grow up. So too will the one I'm talking about. It's how we organize ourselves grandpa. Lead, follow or get out of the way.

You need to beat that into people which means you need to stop choosing milquetoasts like Harper for a leader and get somebody like, well, like yourself to run Canada. You'd probably have us and especially the natives whipped into shape in no time - yep, that's the ticket.

All settled land, or very nearly, has been stolen from someone at some time, it's called the real world, believe it or not but in some places the orignal owners don't get any of it back, ever. Fortunately we are more generous.

So now genocide is considered generous.

Can this get any more Twilight Zone?

Can't you simply be happy you made it alive, and let the dead rest in peace?

For all we know maybe they are the lucky ones.
