It was a vast wasteland back when it was invented and it has only gotten worse. The brain dead watch TV/American movies.

With this we finally agree.

I find myself watching more and more shows from Europe. The quality of the shows are mush better then the big budget crap on the American networks.

There are of course exceptions to the rule with Amazon, AMC, HBO, Netflix,Hulu and others that have changed the rules

It's that time of the year again...Canadians fighting over American programming and advertising substitutions (simsub):

Quote

"There is a certain irony that legislation that has the protection of the Canadian broadcasting industry and its employees as one of its important objectives is being used to allow for the broadcasting of American ads during the Super Bowl to the apparent detriment of the Canadian industry and its employees,"

Nothing says "Canadian culture" like American television programming.

The battle has now reached the Supreme Court of Canada....that's right folks....for  American Super Bowl advertising and simsub.

Note:   the very term "Super Bowl" is a registered trademark of the National Football League.

The Canadian right to view foreign advertising during a foreign television broadcast will now be decided by the Supreme Court of Canada....amazing.

The Supreme Court of Canada is going to play referee to help resolve the question of whether Canadians should be able to watch big-budget American commercials during the Super Bowl.

The court said Thursday it will hear appeals from Bell Canada and the National Football League over a CRTC ruling that exempted the football championship from normal practice in which Canadian ads are substituted for U.S. ones on Canadian TV.

Sorry BC,,,  Letterkenny is not available south of the border.

First of all, a nod to you for recognizing one of the best Ontario shows ever to make it to air.  The Oreo rant is perhaps only second to Hamlet in terms of dramatic monologues by a despondent heir or Junior C hockey coach.

Secondly, while I had heard of it I knew there was something special about the show when some backwoods Montana youngsters, upon hearing I was from "Canada", asked me if I had seen Letterkenny.  They loved the web series, and the web goes everywhere.  ( Oddly, this parallels a situation where a kid in the Nevada desert, beside a gas station on an empty highway, asked me why I talked like the guys on "Trailer Park Boys")

Culture is global, and thusly Canada will one day dominate in the same way Greek culture dominated the Romans.  Mark my words.

I like quality shows no matter where they are from.  There are a crap load of Canadian shows I cannot stand.

Prior to 'Trailer Park Boys' there were only two great ones IMO:

SCTV

Kids in the Hall

I am including all genres of TV, not just comedy.  However, I was a big fan of both SCTV and Kids in the Hall. Hard to argue with those two choices.  Maybe throw Corner Gas in there as well for some very dry but very funny humour.

I think CG came after TPB.  I do think that the 'rural comedies' have been amazingly good since TPB including Fubar.

CRTC hearings currently underway on the future of Canadian pay and free TV are very revealing. Ironically, much of the discussion involves access to and ad revenue from foreign programming, mostly from the United States, the very thing that the CRTC was, at least partially, set up to counter.

Should basic cable service packages include the "4+1", Canadian shorthand for American networks ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, and PBS, or be exclusively Canadian content ?

The CRTC has proposed that cable companies adopt either a "skinny basic" package that would include only Canadian channels or an expanded basic package that could include other channels but would be capped at a rate of $20 to $30. Both would have to be "promoted in an equivalent manner to other packages" and neither would include the 4+1 U.S. networks (NBC, ABC, CBS, Fox and PBS), whose signals are available free over the air in many parts of the country.

...Bell was the lone voice among this group to support the removal of the 4+1 from the basic package, saying the inclusion "undermines the cultural objectives of the system."

Is all of this moot as content distribution models displace traditional broadcast and cable television ? What should the CRTC do ?

http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/crtc-gets-an-earful-at-hearings-on-future-of-tv-1.2764290

We've long abandoned cable. As for online content, we watch much Chinese-language content.

What I do find odd though is Canada's priorities. For example, the UK now requires internet providers to block porn by default and requires customers to identify themselves and their age in person to opt in to it. In other words, the UK focuses its content-regulation policies on public-policy objectives relating to porn and other addictions for example and not on country of origin. I'm not sure, but I think it covers gambling sites too.

Compare that to Canada's system, and that system focuses more on ethnic identity construction rather than on practical public-policy considerations.

This comical story goes on and on....Canadians may lose their "right" to watch American Super Bowl® commercials because of USMCA:

Quote

The new trade pact between Canada, the U.S. and Mexico may make trade freer between the three countries, but that freedom will not apparently extend to Canadians who want to watch American Super Bowl ads.

In a section of the agreement governing the trade in services, Canadian officials agreed to abandon a recent Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission rule that forced whichever Canadian network held the rights to broadcast the Super Bowl to show the original U.S. ads on them, and not replace them with Canadian ones.

Hate America...love American Super Bowl® ads !

Another year, and the begging for a "Netflix tax" continues from the CRTC and state broadcaster CBC.

They can't compete, so best to tax those who produce the content platforms that many Canadians actually want to watch (Netflix, Google, Youtube, etc.).

Streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime should be required to pay their fair share toward producing Canadian content, according to some arguments filed during public consultations on an overhaul of broadcast and telecommunication regulations, which wrapped up Friday.
