Big Guy Posted August 23, 2014 Report Posted August 23, 2014 The Ice Bucket Challenge, sometimes called the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, is an activity involving dumping a bucket of ice water on one's head to promote awareness of the disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and encourage donations to the cause. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_Bucket_Challenge The challenge dares nominated participants to be filmed having a bucket of ice water poured on their heads and challenging others to do the same. A common stipulation is that nominated people have 24 hours to comply or forfeit by way of a charitable financial donation. I believe that the amount is $100. There have been many methods and promotions used to help elicit charitable donations. Recent initiatives have been sponsoring running, swimming, hair cuts etc. Once in a while a local fair will have an area where the local educator or politician sits on a chair above water and if/when a person hits a target, the chair releases and the “victim” gets wet. I attended one where the “victim” was teasing and baiting individuals and was raising a fair amount of money. What is the psychology behind these kinds of initiatives? What makes them popular? What different ones have you seen that have been successful? What can we anticipate in the future? WestCoastRunner Posted August 23, 2014 Report Posted August 23, 2014 Call it serendipity or synchronicity or just plain coincidence, but I was out for dinner tonight on an outdoor patio having dinner with friends and all of a sudden a bunch of people came out with buckets full of ice water. They proceeded to dump this stuff on the poor man's head and afterwards, he challenged other manager's of well established restaurant cafes to do the same. And btw, he donated 1250.00 to als. Good for him. I don't have a problem with these types of charity events. ALS doesn't get a lot of attention so whatever they can get is great! I think they have raised close to 60 million so far. waldo Posted August 23, 2014 Report Posted August 23, 2014 a touch of controversy over the challenge in that, apparently, some being challenged don't follow-up with donations... instead, feeling that having 'met the challenge' they aren't obligated to donate. But yes, ALS has been somewhat the overlooked disease in that it's relative afflicted numbers aren't high and consequently hasn't received appropriate research funding. I can speak from some periphery authority in seeing how a close relative rapidly degenerated with ALS... how I quickly became an internet ALS doctor... and was absolutely floored to realize just how little world-wide ALS research was going on at that time. Better late... than never! Quote

Bonam Posted August 23, 2014 Report Posted August 23, 2014 (edited) a touch of controversy over the challenge in that, apparently, some being challenged don't follow-up with donations... Not sure what the controversy is. It's a campaign that gets attention and makes some people donate to research. The ones that don't donate, certainly wouldn't have donated anyway if they'd never heard of it, so nothing is lost, and maybe have some fun along the way. Some do donate, so net gain for medical research. A bit silly with the whole ice buckets thing but hey whatever gets people their kicks I suppose. feeling that having 'met the challenge' they aren't obligated to donate No one is "obligated" to donate. It's a donation (voluntary), not a tax. If someone feels like "playing", more power to em. I'm sure plenty of people just ignore the whole thing, as well. If someone told me I had to pay money and/or get ice dumped on me, I'd likely just ignore them. Edited August 23, 2014 by Bonam Quote

WestCoastRunner Posted August 23, 2014 Report Posted August 23, 2014 Leonardo Dicaprio is in northern Alberta filming an environmental documentary. He accepted the ice bucket challenge with one of the chiefs. He also challenged Harper. Hmmm, wonder if Harper will accept. Quote I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels. Moonlight Graham Posted August 23, 2014 Report Posted August 23, 2014 An argument I've heard against this challenge is that it's a waste of water and ice (or the energy to produce ice). Compared to something like Movember that isn't wasteful and the argument kind makes some sense. It's been a great campaign that has not only raised a bunch of cash for the cause but more importantly awareness. Quote
