-1=e^ipi Posted August 5, 2014 Report Posted August 5, 2014 Whether or not it's reasonable doesn't really matter. It does matter. It makes no sense to be proud of things that you had no influence over. Want to be proud because you worked really hard at your job and earned some money? Sure. Want to be proud because you won a competition? Okay. Want to be proud because a soccer team that you coached won a game? Okay. But want to be proud because you were born into a certain ethnic group? No, that makes no sense. Quote
eyeball Posted August 5, 2014 Report Posted August 5, 2014 Tim Horton's Tim Horton's unites all Canadians. Crappy coffee unites us. Gag. Quote A government without public oversight is like a nuclear plant without lead shielding.
Boges Posted August 5, 2014 Report Posted August 5, 2014 Crappy coffee unites us. Gag. Starbucks or Second Cup certainly doesn't. Quote
Moonbox Posted August 5, 2014 Report Posted August 5, 2014 No, that makes no sense. It's not for you to decide what people should or shouldn't feel proud about. Nobody cares what you think, just like you shouldn't care about people feeling proud of their ancestry. -1=e^ipi Posted August 5, 2014 Report Posted August 5, 2014 (edited) It's not for you to decide what people should or shouldn't feel proud about. I didn't decide upon it. It just doesn't make sense. Nobody cares what you think Some people care what I think. Nor would nobody caring what I think negate my arguments. just like you shouldn't care about people feeling proud of their ancestry. I care because I think that nationalistic or ethnic pride are dangerous concepts. Edited August 5, 2014 by -1=e^ipi Quote
Topaz Posted August 5, 2014 Report Posted August 5, 2014 Maybe it would be easier to ask ..what aren't you proud of and what divides Canadians??? Let's see...the PMO, the senate....over paid MP's.....government that doesn't treat the vets well ,but is more an willing to send them into war...... Quote

Moonbox Posted August 6, 2014 Report Posted August 6, 2014 (edited) I didn't decide upon it. It just doesn't make sense. It makes perfect sense, it's just a subjective concept that you're getting hung up on. Some people care what I think. Nor would nobody caring what I think negate my arguments. You have no argument. You're trying to objectively argue against people's vague and subjective feelings, which is ridiculous. I care because I think that nationalistic or ethnic pride are dangerous concepts. It can be, if misdirected, but it can just as easily be a good thing. The same can be said about any type of inclusive/exclusive groupings. Fact is that us and them is an instinctive concept for humans and arguing against it is like arguing against the concept of family, which is just as dangerous or good. YellowDucky Posted August 13, 2014 Report Posted August 13, 2014 I am not being sarcastic here. Realistically, the thing that most unites Canadians is not being American. Quote
bush_cheney2004 Posted August 13, 2014 Report Posted August 13, 2014 True that.....the Canadian identity is defined as not American. Quote Economics trumps Virtue.
On Guard for Thee Posted August 13, 2014 Report Posted August 13, 2014 My grandparents chose to come to Canada from Scotland early in the last century, so I just have to read a few chapters of "How the Scott's invented the Modern World" and I feel quite proud of my heritage and my country. Quote
