More tightening of image restrictions from the mods. I posted a very relative and commonly used "Bingo Card" for tonight's U.S. presidential State of the Union Address in the U.S. politics area but it was removed and I received this non-warning cry for attention.

Same mod has been peppering me with chatty, but undesired PMs. Why ?

"Large images not conducive to the discussion NOT allowed. Your bingo card was hidden by me.

I'm going to assume you thought people would actually play - which would be a kind of political discussion - which is why this isn't a warning. But don't do this again.

I suggest going onto 'Chat' during the State of the Union - perhaps even post that you are going to do so. Then you can provide a link to the card there so people can play at home.

Cheers."

I posted a requested image of a state trooper shaking hands with a protester last night and it was not removed. Images are not videos and the policy remains unclear and arbitrary.

It will always be unclear and arbitrary as we have to make a very subjective evaluation as to relevance.

Also - don't make the rookie poster mistake of thinking because something was approved then it's "ok". That's not so.

Well, forgive me for being friendly I guess. Your participation here is valued, so I see no need to be surly with you unless you prefer that. Also I value diversity, so I acquiesce to your (I assume) natural tendency to slap people on the back and be friendly as Americans are wont to do.

In any case, I do send PMs for edge cases and this was that.

Thank you for an explanation, but please don't make the rookie moderator mistake of thinking this requires the wisdom and finesse of King Solomon.

Also, please stop sending me personal messages unrelated to the moderator function. If you desire an American friend,

get an American dog.

You have sent me PMs unrelated to any "cases" for reasons only you know. Please do not do this in the future unless it is related to a forum issue or concern. My PM option is disabled by choice. Thank you.

Ok - I don't recall sending you such notes, except for asking you to change your (IMO) unsightly avatar.

Really ? Do I have to post all of them to drive the point home ? You just sent me another one related to my request. Since we can't disable moderator personal messages, please do not abuse the PM function.

The "other one" was moderator related. Not sure what to do with this request. I'll just try not to PM you unless it's required for moderator business but honestly I don't recall PMing you for other reasons. Maybe I have.

If you have a better approach let me know, thanks. It will be difficult since you can't PM me.

You have PM'd me for all kinds of nonsense (several insisting on an avatar change, post count milestone, HTML code, etc.). Please stop.

That's the idea. No PMs unless required for "official duties". I do not harass other members with PMs....is this a generational thing ?

Seeing that red notification flag is like a police warning light. Thanks.

Oh, right. I emailed you recently to congratulate you on surpassing the 40K milestone. My apologies. I totally forgot about that.

The HTML code question was a follow-up to something you PM'd me about, ie. how to post tables in Invision. I would call that 'official board business' but I'll note that you don't want to help out with such things in future.

I don't know what gene rational is. Anyway, noted. I will try to reduce the number of PMs I send you.

Relax, man. There's no "stop and frisk" on MLW. :D

No it wasn't...you wanted to know some table information that I had previously provided.

Please don't send me any PMs unless it is for forum related matters. Relax...I am not your life coach.

You are #1 and I happened to just notice it. Don't overthink this.

It was for a new resource I was setting up for the board - a source lookup and reference file. That project has since been abandoned.

I would be glad to have you as a life coach. Cheers to you...

Good...just because the forum engine and web hosting service is American doesn't mean I provide free support. Please contact the appropriate vendor for customer service in the future.

I would be glad to have you as a life coach. Cheers to you...

Whatever....

If only others could get on the 'promote good discussions' bit. Many threads I see as of late prompt me to skip the entire thread due to ...garbage.

Indeed. To be a Forum Facilitator, click the Report button associated with any post that is perceived to be objectionable and state: WHAT, WHY and HOW.

WHAT: Identify the infraction.

WHY: Explain briefly why you believe it is an infraction.

HOW: Recommend an intervention.

For example: "MhH is derailing the thread with this post because he is repeatedly asking ChA why the sky is blue despite the fact that ChA already responded that the color of the sky is not the topic of discussion. I recommend a flip of the coin: heads, ChA gets a stern warning or tails, MhH is banned permanently since this is the 8th time he has done this same thing."

The idea here is that Kimmy should not facilitate in a fair way, that her purpose should be to advocate a certain perspective,

I am not confident the idea is that clear but the concept of "fair" is in the eye of the beholder. I constantly have to remind my brats about this. They have this peculiar habit of complaining that things are not fair. I do not get it.

I do not think of my moderator actions as fair. Rather, I would like to think of my actions as upholding the standards of the forum. Fairness be damned.

More tightening of image restrictions from the mods.

Yes. Everybody should be ready for that. We reserve the right to tighten restrictions as we see fit. We may choose to tighten them even further in the future. Time will tell.

Next time, just post a link to the image you want to share. We do not hold any of these truths to be self-evident but you responded to a member who did so.

I posted a requested image of a state trooper shaking hands with a protester last night and it was not removed.

The operative word being requested.

somebody asked + somebody delivered = some fruitful discussion; time to move on.

It was clear that the image was posted to further the discussion.

Our standards for starting a new discussion are higher than our standards for a bit of perhaps-clutter in the middle of a multi-page thread that has little focus. The only reason why your Opening Post was not taken down entirely was because it contained a faint whiff of potentially intelligent focussed discussion that could arise from that topic as presented. MOD BIAS: In my most cynical and sardonic outlook of the world, I consider your OP to be valid political discussion without which the entire thing would have been tossed into the Trolling bin. In our estimation, we are being generous.

Then again, MLW is not a poetry circle. Maybe the proper intervention would be to move your OP to the Beer and Sports section.

Thank you for an explanation, but please don't make the rookie moderator mistake of thinking this requires the wisdom and finesse of King Solomon.

We like to think it takes the wisdom and finesse of people like Ray Charles or Stevie Wonder or Blind Willie Johnson ---- you know, folks who have never seen an harmonica nor a piano before but still seem to shine above the rest of us.

That's great...eventually arriving at the point of no images allowed, just as I recommended years ago.

You're call....either way...there will still be a State of the Union Address tonight and it will invite some political discussion.

OK, but Ray Charles definitely saw and played the piano as a sighted child...he was not blind from birth. Ray Charles was wise for his music, not just for being a blind piano player.

I agree with you. I have no idea what my opinion was at the time of the change.

MOD BIAS OFF: Sure. Feel free to start a thread on the topic.

Meh. I try putting myself in their mother's shoes and I can not do it. I wonder how they explained to their blind kids why they have to sit at the back of the bus. It is a crazy world and life aint fair!

Double Meh....my parents and siblings survived it just fine...this MLW forum hardly compares.

here's a thought: is the "complaining banter" over PMs between the new moderator and a member meaningful to this thread?

as for reduced images... potentially moving to no images in threads? What a stooopid decision - imagine that, conveying information by a graphical means! Over the interweeb yet! What a concept. Perhaps someone should lighten up and realize forums have moved beyond the days of modems and BBS'

Hi Waldo - "no images" is not in play, as far as I know. We deal with people posting large images, images that aren't necessary to any discussion, joke images and that's what this is about. There are plenty of examples where images can be fairly used.

Same with embedded videos but that's not allowed here anymore either. I guess the real solution would be to address those who are shitting up the threads with garbage instead of a blanket type rule. I mean there are rules against trolling but we still have that going on. It's all arbitrary.

Don't bother arguing against it, because you know it's true.

Oversized images were discussed in the <img> tag thread back in 2012. Most forum engines have an automatic image resizing feature, but apparently it is not deployed here (Gallery). I agree that embedded images can be too large and awkward, but often there is no way for a member to resize an image without copying/editing/hosting the image elsewhere, or using HTML code that is often rejected by the IPS forum engine.

This thread applies: http://www.mapleleafweb.com/forums/topic/20539-img-tags/?p=774017

Oh, yes it's true. Trolling happens.

No shit, now what do you do about it? I have made some reports of trolling posts, but the decision was to keep most of them. So my definition of trolling is different, but when I post exactly that way, I get my posts removed. Very interesting.
