Big Guy Posted April 2, 2014 Report Posted April 2, 2014 Jim Karygiannis is resigning as a Liberal MP and turning his sights on a bid for a seat on Toronto city council. The resignation will create a second vacancy in Toronto, following Olivia Chow’s recent resignation as the NDP MP for Trinity-Spadina to run in the city’s mayoral race. I wonder how he will get along with the new or old mayor? Boges Posted April 2, 2014 Report Posted April 2, 2014 I wonder if this will hurt her popularity in the core. http://www.thestar.com/news/city_hall/toronto2014election/2014/04/02/downtown_relief_line_not_an_election_priority_chow_says.html The downtown relief subway line should not be an issue in Toronto’s 2014 municipal election campaign, mayoral candidate Olivia Chow says. During a morning radio interview, Chow was asked about her commitment to building the subway line. Critics have accused her of waffling on her position since launching her campaign last month. Chow said while she supports the line, she noted it is not projected to open until 2031, 17 years from now. “Can we do it faster, maybe, but it’s $8 billion, a lot of money, so we need to negotiate with the federal and provincial government on how we are going to do this,” she said in the interview broadcast on CIUT 89.5 FM. “We need to determine what route and which alignment, which we’ll do this late spring and early summer, so once we have that then we can begin to negotiate. But I don’t think it should be an election issue because … nothing is going to break ground for another four, five, years, six years, because the study itself will take that long.” Environment assessments and engineering studies would have to be done before construction could start. Mayoral candidate John Tory has made building a downtown relief line, which he calls the Yonge st. relief line, a key part of his platform. Tory and Stintz could pound away at her on this. Quote

Maybe, also could strengthen her support because she is successfully communicating the fact that it's a no go unless other levels of government step in to help with the 8B budget. Tory could be walking into a trap if he doesn't use caution. WWWTT Quote Maple Leaf Web is now worth $720.00! Down over $1,500 in less than one year! Total fail of the moderation on this site! What's the problem with what she said? She identified it as a priority and she said she'd work to get money for it. What could Tory possibly say? Oh wait, he said this: “Toronto needs a leader. They need a Mayor who will push aggressively to get the Yonge Street Relief Line and Scarborough subway built. 2031 isn’t good enough. We need to get started now. Ms. Chow thinks the present Yonge Street subway line is just fine. I don’t. What is even more incredible, is that by waiting until 2031, as she advocates, Toronto will add between 1.5 and 2 million people in that period of time. Can you imagine the added transit and traffic congestion? Her lack of response to this important issue is totally unacceptable. Except I don't see any plan from this guy to get it built any fast than that. Where's the money? Where's the route? Quote

If the NDP is truly one party nationally no matter if it's federal or provincial I could see where Chow doesn't want to burden the "Middle Class" with extra taxes. Edited April 3, 2014 by Boges Quote

Maybe he was in a drunken stupor and is not responsible for his actions. Maybe not. Ya I didn't get that? Actually a lot of what this guy does I can't figure out? Like when he said that he was probably to drunk to remember smoking crack? Is he lying, or is he really telling the truth? Does he think that nobody is listening? Either way, there's got to be a lot of people out there that don't want to even hear Fords name anymore, public life is out of the question for this guy, that's the clearest thing coming out of all of this. Oh by the way, this comment would be more appropriate in the RF update. WWWTT Quote Maple Leaf Web is now worth $720.00! Down over $1,500 in less than one year! Shady Posted April 3, 2014 Report Posted April 3, 2014 To-day Rob Ford votes against congratulating our Olympic athletes and then votes AGAINST naming a street in honor of Nelson Mandela. Maybe not. Sorry Olivia, that's for the voters and media to decide, not you honey. Quote

I get all that, I still feel Tory is off base here. If anything, Chow saying building the DRL shouldn't be an election issue makes sense because there isn't really any doubt that it needs to get done. The issue here isn't the the DRL per se, but the matter of how to pay for it, which speaks to the much larger issues you touch on here. Quote
overthere Posted April 3, 2014 Report Posted April 3, 2014 I am really hoping Ford can sneak up the middle somehow and get reelected. There is a simple and legitimate reason: the election night party that would follow would be one of the greatest shindigs in the history of hullabaloos. They'd consume the entire crack supply of eastern North America before midnight. Quote Science too hard for you? Try religion!
guyser Posted April 3, 2014 Report Posted April 3, 2014 Complete nonsense. Gotta laugh at egg on the face huh? TORONTO - Mayor Rob Ford’s penchant for lone-wolf votes got him in hot water Wednesday — and council wouldn’t let him get out of it. Ford was the only vote on council against naming a street in honour of Nelson Mandela and congratulating Canada’s Olympic athletes. Anyways, I think it's funny how Chow is telling voters what she thinks should be issues, and what she thinks shouldn't be issues. Sorry Olivia, that's for the voters and media to decide, not you honey. Its not funny, its politics. What is funny is that you think its funny when political parties and politicians all do this, but now its a problem because Chow tries it. Curious world some live in. Complete nonsense? Quote
