Boges Posted October 31, 2013 Report Posted October 31, 2013 I'm sure this parent will have her house egged tonight. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/10415898/Woman-issues-obese-Halloween-trick-or-treaters-with-warning-letter.html An American woman launched a Halloween campaign against childhood obesity by issuing trick-or-treaters she considers fat with a warning letter instead of sweets. The woman in Fargo, North Dakota risked leaving herself open to reprisals from disgruntled costume-wearing youngsters by withholding confectionery and calling it “unhealthy”. The letters, which were addressed to their parents, said: “You are probably wondering why your child has this note. “Your child is, in my opinion, moderately obese and should not be consuming sugar and treats to the extent of some children this Halloween season. “My hope is that you will step up as a parent and ration candy this Halloween and not allow your child to continue these unhealthy eating habits.” Quote

Shady Posted October 31, 2013 Report Posted October 31, 2013 I'm dressing up as a progressive this year. So far it's really fun. I get to tell people what's good for them, and take their money at the sametime! Quote

guyser Posted October 31, 2013 Report Posted October 31, 2013 I hope this is a hoax. Kind of doubtful, she was interviewed on radio and numerous sites and papers picked it up. Quote
Guest American Woman Posted November 1, 2013 Report Posted November 1, 2013 I hope this is a hoax. It was broadcast on Y-94. John Austin, a member of the “Chris John and Jane in the Morning” show on 95.1 has worked at Y-94. He said the letter is almost certainly a hoax. “It’s their shtick, that’s their thing, it’s what they are kinda famous for,” Austin said. http://www.inforum.com/event/article/id/416910/ Quote

There's a great analogy there: candy-grubbing-children as individuals who don't know what's best for them, who need a parent to parse our the candy. kimmy Posted November 6, 2013 Report Posted November 6, 2013 I was pretty surprised on Thursday when some little ghosts and goblins came knocking on my door trying to scare up some treats! I didn't realize that any children lived in this building, so I was completely unprepared! Not a single piece of candy in the place! Of course I didn't want to send the little tricksters away disappointed, so I tried to think of something else I could give them. I didn't think they'd like potatoes and onions very much, and I was about to give up, but then I remembered that I had a 6 pack of Palm Bay in the fridge! Boy were they surprised! -k Quote (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Friendly forum facilitator! ┬──┬◡ノ(° -°ノ)

bleeding heart Posted November 6, 2013 Report Posted November 6, 2013 It is. Interestingly, despite August's protestations, I discovered that typing "WTF is Palm Bay" into Google not a bit more onerous than typing "WTF is Palm Bay" onto a post on this site. But then, WTF do I know? Quote “There is a limit to how much we can constantly say no to the political masters in Washington. All we had was Afghanistan to wave. On every other file we were offside. But then, WTF do I know?BH, you make my point better than I do. Oh, the sarcasm. Oh, the irony. But as you and I say, WTF. ------ Let me go back several thousand years in human history and make my point more clear: I could have googled "Palm Bay" but I chose instead to post my confusion here. The "Ancient Greeks" called this sarcasm, and then irony. It is saying one thing when you mean the opposite. [bTW, the Internet portrays sarcasm and irony badly.] Religious fanatics from the medieval ages (eg. Islamists) barely understand sarcasm, and irony utterly confuses them. IMHO, as modern Westerners, our best defense/offense against religious fanatics & superstition is not Charters or laws against beards. It is sarcasm and irony. ----- All modern Western teenagers understand sarcasm. Understanding sarcasm is what we now in the West call adulthood. Islamists are mere children. Once any Muslim kid understands sarcasm, or even better irony, she or he is no longer an Islamist. Edited November 8, 2013 by August1991 Quote

I was only taking the micky. As you say, the internet & co. Religious fanatics from the medieval ages (eg. Islamists) barely understand sarcasm, and irony utterly confuses them. I doubt this is really true. IMHO, as modern Westerners, our best defense/offense against religious fanatics & superstition is not Charters or laws against beards. It is sarcasm and irony. Now this could well be the case. Quote “There is a limit to how much we can constantly say no to the political masters in Washington. All we had was Afghanistan to wave.
