kimmy Posted August 6, 2013 Report Posted August 6, 2013 My standby is Okanagan Springs Pale Ale or Okanagan Springs 1516. I also like Vancouver Island Brewery's Dark Lager. -k Quote (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Friendly forum facilitator! ┬──┬◡ノ(° -°ノ)
Guest Posted August 6, 2013 Report Posted August 6, 2013 I like a good, hoppy pale ale. If you get a chance to try "Proper Job", (it's English, but it's in liquor stores in AB) give it a shot. Kimmy, have you tried much Driftwood stuff? I have only had their Fat Tug. It was very good, but strong. Good fall backs for me are Full Moon Pale Ale, Tankhouse Ale, or Smithwick's. Quote
ReeferMadness Posted August 6, 2013 Report Posted August 6, 2013 I'm drinking a Mill Street Brewery sampler pack consisting of: Curious Parrot Ale Don Valley Bench Organic Lager Tankhouse Ale Lemon Tea Ale Stock Ale Quote Unlimited economic growth has the marvelous quality of stilling discontent while preserving privilege, a fact that has not gone unnoticed among liberal economists. - Noam Chomsky It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it. - Upton Sinclair
BC_chick Posted August 6, 2013 Report Posted August 6, 2013 Mill St. Organic, it's a great summer beer. It's only 4% alcohol so you can drink it in the daytime too. I don't know what it is about the summer that makes alcohol so good in the day. I would never crave a drink in the middle of the afternoon on a cold rainy day. kimmy Posted August 6, 2013 Report Posted August 6, 2013 I would like to try all of the beers that you guys have suggested! Unfortunately, here in Kim City the liquor stores don't always have the greatest selection. -k Quote (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Friendly forum facilitator! ┬──┬◡ノ(° -°ノ)
The_Squid Posted August 6, 2013 Report Posted August 6, 2013 Good topic. In this summer heat I've really enjoyed Hoyne Honey Heffeweizen and Hoyne Pilsner. http://hoynebrewing.ca/ Any other time it's Driftwood FatTug. Can't get enough of FatTug... Never get tired of it! One of the best brews ever! http://driftwoodbeer.com/beers/fat-tug-ipa/ Favourite beer is Dogfish Head 90 minute IPA. Can't buy it in Canada though. http://www.dogfish.com/brews-spirits/the-brews/year-round-brews/90-minute-ipa.htm Quote
Boges Posted August 6, 2013 Report Posted August 6, 2013 This whole move towards hoppy bitter IPA's is baffling to me. What people think smooth pilsners and largers are for sissys? Quote
cybercoma Posted August 6, 2013 Author Report Posted August 6, 2013 I'm drinking a Mill Street Brewery sampler pack consisting of: Curious Parrot Ale Don Valley Bench Organic Lager Tankhouse Ale Lemon Tea Ale Stock Ale i really like Tankhouse, but their Lemon Tea Ale is the only one that I've ever had that is actually good. It's a bright summery beer with a hint of earl grey and is not sweet at all. The other companies' tea beers are disgustingly sweet and not as subtle as Mill St's beer. Quote

cybercoma Posted August 6, 2013 Author Report Posted August 6, 2013 This whole move towards hoppy bitter IPA's is baffling to me. What people think smooth pilsners and largers are for sissys? i don't know about others, but I genuinely enjoy the flavour of hops. Moreover, I find really hoppy beers to have more interesting and complex flavour palettes. In Halifax Garrison brewing makes an Imperial ale that is extremely bitter, but after your taste buds adjust, you notice the other wonderful flavours in the beer. It's kind of like dark roast coffees. I drink dark roast coffee without cream or sugar and after awhile it begins to stop tasting like you're licking the bottom of your BBQ and you start to recognize the subtleties of the beans. To the uninitiated though, they taste horrendous (dark coffees and hoppy beers). If you stick with it though, I think they're incredibly rewarding. Quote
Black Dog Posted August 6, 2013 Report Posted August 6, 2013 I've been picking up a lot of stuff from Bellwoods Brewery. the Roman Candle is a great IPA for people who don't love IPAs: moderately hoppy, crisp and refreshing. Wizard Wolf is fantastic too. But for stuff you can find at the LCBO, anything from Beau's will work. Quote

Black Dog Posted August 6, 2013 Report Posted August 6, 2013 This whole move towards hoppy bitter IPA's is baffling to me. What people think smooth pilsners and largers are for sissys? Nothing wrong with those types of beer at all; blame pisswater like Coors Light and Budweise for giving them a bad name. There's a definite trend towards "more is more" in craft brews and not just in IPAs. I'm seeing a lot more Double IPAs/American Pale Ales (stronger and hoppier than IPAs), Imperial Stouts (+9% ABV), Belgian sour beers and other taste-bud destroyers. I think it's partly machisimo and partly a way to distinguish craft beers from the inspid lagers and pilsners that make up the bulk of the beer market. Quote
The_Squid Posted August 6, 2013 Report Posted August 6, 2013 This whole move towards hoppy bitter IPA's is baffling to me. What people think smooth pilsners and largers are for sissys? I prefer IPAs and hoppier beers. My other favourite beer is the Hoyne Wolf Vine... it's a fresh-hopped pale ale (meaning they use fresh, not dried hops) that is only available during hop harvest. As you're on Vancouver Island, I wonder if you've had the Buckerfield's Bitter at Swans brew pub in Victoria. It's been about five years since I had one, but I remember it being an excellent beer. When I go to Swans I get the ESB or the Scotch Ale. They make some fine brews. Quote
Topaz Posted August 6, 2013 Report Posted August 6, 2013 You know what I notice about beer....at a party where there's all kinds of alcohol to drink....there's all the men standing around with a bottle of beer in their hands, so do men prefer beer over any other alcohol???? Quote
ReeferMadness Posted August 7, 2013 Report Posted August 7, 2013 My all-time favorite beer name is "The Backhand of God Stout". Honestly, I thought the beer itself was kind of overdone (you could almost chew it like porridge) but I had to try it when I saw the name. I think it's a couple of things: Men are naturally lazy and you don't have to stop and mix a beer It's too easy to overdo it on hard liquor and wind up embarrassing yourself Beer keeps on tasting good. Sweeter liquors like coolers and ciders get sickening after a couple. my 2 cents. The_Squid Posted August 7, 2013 Report Posted August 7, 2013 I didn't hate it but I didn't love it either. It is a very heavy ale not to everyone's taste. It does have a good name. Organic too. Quote

I also love their Stock Ale. Such an easy drinking yet flavourful and light-ish ale. Their brew pub is worth a visit if you're ever in downtown TO. I try to make the trip every time I'm in town.
