Guest Derek L Posted December 15, 2012 Report Posted December 15, 2012 Good look at us finding common ground on personal freedom, both guns and soft drugs should be subject to laws on their use but that is where it should stop. I tried pot a couple of times as a teen, did nothing for me, but I don’t see what the big deal is……..Can’t say I’ve ever heard of a pothead stoned out of his tree coming home and beating up his wife……We’ve got alcohol for that. You have no argument here for either. Telling people what they can and can not due when they are hurting no one does nothing for our society and that included guns. Quote
Pliny Posted December 15, 2012 Report Posted December 15, 2012 You didn't read how some provinces in Switzerland are now requiring the weapons be left at the barracks due to some recent violence. Also, handguns are strictly controlled. Not the gun nut paradise that you think it is. As they put in more gun control laws you can watch their gun murder rate rise. Moonlight Graham Posted December 16, 2012 Report Posted December 16, 2012 That should read : People need to be more strictly regulated As has been stated, the murder rate in the United States (and Canada) has been going down for the last several decades, yet incidents like this recent shooting seem to be more common………I’m sure some of it is to do with 24/7 media, thusly allowing us to be more aware of such incidents, but there is something different.. Murder rates? But what about gun homicides: The U.S. is actually getting safer. In the decade since the year 2000, violent crime rates fell by 20 percent; aggravated assault by 22 percent; motor vehicle theft by 42 percent; murder – by all weapons – by 13 percent. But...gun homicide rates haven’t improved at all. They were at roughly the same levels in 2009 as they were in 2000. Meanwhile, serious but non-fatal gun injuries caused during assault have actually increased in the last decade by 20 percent, as guns laws have gotten looser and getting automatic weapons has become easier. http://globalpublicsquare.blogs.cnn.com/2012/07/27/time-to-face-facts-on-gun-control/ Quote "All generalizations are false, including this one." - Mark Twain Partisanship is a disease of the intellect.
Argus Posted December 16, 2012 Report Posted December 16, 2012 Then explain Switzerland…… Switzerland does not have a national mythos of the strong man with the gun writing all wrongs done him. Swiss boys don't grow up imbued with a sense of phallic attachment to firearms and seeing them as the ultimate form of freedom. It's also a society with better controls and support for those who aren't 100% stable. Guest Derek L Posted December 16, 2012 Report Posted December 16, 2012 Murder rates? But what about gun homicides: http://globalpublics...on-gun-control/ So they’ve stayed the same after the repeal of the Assault Weapons ban………Clearly that law did little then. Quote

Guest Derek L Posted December 16, 2012 Report Posted December 16, 2012 Yeah, I was thinking the same. Yeah, just as disgusting as those that would use little children’s deaths as an emotional vehicle to further their own stated agenda……………. Funny though, that over three hundred million other guns, owned by tens of millions of people, didn’t kill little kids on Friday...... Quote
Sleipnir Posted December 16, 2012 Report Posted December 16, 2012 (edited) Last year Great Britain: 1 per 7,830,125 people died from gun shots. U.S: 1 per 29,044 people died from gun shots. Britain has one of the strictest gun laws in the world, while the US has one of the most lax gun laws internationally. Moonlight Graham Posted December 16, 2012 Report Posted December 16, 2012 So they’ve stayed the same after the repeal of the Assault Weapons ban………Clearly that law did little then. Why didn't gun homicides go down like total violent crime did? Why are total murder rates going down but not gun murders? Seems the repeal and other possible state policies likely are a factor that prevented gun murders & gun violence from going down. Also: "serious but non-fatal gun injuries caused during assault have actually increased in the last decade by 20 percent". bush_cheney2004 Posted December 16, 2012 Report Posted December 16, 2012 Why didn't gun homicides go down like total violent crime did? Because suicides are part of the statistic. Same thing was seen in Canada for knife-related homicides and hangings. Quote Economics trumps Virtue.

Well according to the FBI, gun murders have been going down: http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/crime-in-the-u.s/2010/crime-in-the-u.s.-2010/tables/10shrtbl08.xls Well at the same time, murders with knives, bats and hands have flat lined And as I said, this is the trend after the repeal of the Assault Weapons ban..........
