And he did ten times better than Ford or Miller. Frankly those two remind me of the two jokers from a deck of cards.

Mayor Rob Ford is putting his job on the line defending the principle that a politician should be free to listen to a lobbyist’s pitch, and then pitch the lobbyist on donating to a private charity.

http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/cityhallpolitics/article/1249422--mayor-rob-ford-s-conflict-of-interest-case-rooted-in-donations-he-solicited-from-lobbyists

Media's awfully quiet today ... it's court day for Ford I think.

Eta. Oh ... next Wed.

Mayor Rob Ford met the 500-pound butter sculpture created in his image and the artist behind it on Thursday at the Canadian National Exhibition.

He stopped by shortly after 7 p.m. at the farm section of the Better Living Centre, where several butter sculptures are housed,in a rare public appearance with his wife, his young son and daughter.

The sculpture depicts Mr. Ford reading a Margaret Atwood novel behind the wheel of a car, steering with his elbow. The mayor has feuded with Ms. Atwood over cuts to libraries, and came under fire earlier this month after he was photographed reading paperwork behind the wheel on the Gardiner Expressway.

Here's an interesting column about Krista Ford's comments.

http://fullcomment.nationalpost.com/2012/08/31/barbara-kay-twitter-critics-get-it-wrong-on-krista-ford/

We all know what they were saying, and we all know they have a valid point. It is political correctness that fuelled the reflexive righteous anger. For of course it is a woman’s right to dress like a whore, just as it is a woman’s right to dress like a poor person. But the difference is that dressing like a poor person does not look like an invitation to a sexual advance, and dressing like a whore does.

Mark my words, please. I did not say dressing like a whore is an invitation to sexual assault, nor – contrary to comedian Alice Moran’s accusation against Ms Ford – does a call for fashion prudence suggest that anyone who has been sexually assaulted is in fact a whore. Obviously many modestly dressed women are sexually assaulted anyway. But I agree with Ms Ford that dressing like a whore – that is, dressing like the kind of woman whose professional sartorial fashion sense is premised on the need to maximize male lust – is to send a message that extremely high sexual interest from males is not only welcome, but very welcome.

I guess slut-shamers like Barbara Kay don't go to the beach.

Dangerous behaviour.

Yes, that's the other side of it.

As Pakistani Tariq Ali said, "The religious and cultural oppression of women in my country is, at a fundamental and philosophical level, also extremely disrespectful of men."

The sex worker in my neighborhood wears a long plaid skirt and cardigan.

Which maybe raises yet another question: "Whores"? Really?

How do you know that Ford is suffering from stress due to the job? Who knows? Maybe the job is good for Ford's health.

Well, having watched "biggest Loser" they have reported that stress WILL make your body stored FAT! Ford is too over weight NOT to have diabetes, high blood pressure etc. You think being mayor of Toronto isn't stressful?

Sure, it's not as if you are currently--in your very post here--indulging in exactly the same exercise, towards me.

Good job.

After all, why hold yourself to the same standards you expect of others?

Ms. Ford may have been indelicate with the point she was making but you...well of course..you are perfect you never said anything that could be misconstrued the wrong way-.

What makes you think she was "misconstrued"? What point was she really trying to make, but in which basic English failed her?

More to the point--since I was talking about Barbara Kay, not Ms. Ford--how was Kay misconstrued? And how did her editors miss the shoddy writing which subsequently led to her being misconstrued?

She said exactly what she meant. Nothing has been misconstrued.

not you-you are perfect-you are superior. You can't possibly have ever said anything stupid in your life

But if my stupidity was pronounced loudly in a newspaper article, and my opinion (in the context of rape) is that women shouldn't be dressing like "sluts" and "whores," then hopefully more reasonbale folks would be calling me out on my foolishness.

Meanwhile, rue, you could applaud my fine opinions on the matter, defending me from criticism, and joining the other reactionary mouth-breathers...who, after all, are soooo morally superior to "whores."

:)

Yep: Barbara Kay and Rue: towering pillars of moral decency, unlike the "whores" they so righteously detest. :)

At least the last part is plainly true.

I'm flattered by the offer, but I'm a married man. But good luck to you in your search.

Shivering through another of your patented little tantrums, I see.

life. It is a cold hard reality. All of us whether we like it or not are judged by the way we look and dress.

No, little tantrum-thrower, the "sad reality," the "cold hard reality," is that women are not usually grabbed in dark alleys because of the way they're dressed, and then raped at knife-point.

And even the minority who do suffer through exactly this, through such horrific crimes of opportunity, are not attacked because of the way they're dressed.

Virtually all rapes have nothing whatsoever to do with the way women dress. Hell, most rapes are by men that the women already know.

I see you're unaware of basic facts, and of "cold hard reality."

If you're going to insist upon using Ms. Ford and Barbara Kay as your authorities on rape, it's little wonder you're so ignorant of the subject.

I wish Ms. Ford had five minutes alone with the crown princes of righteousness Bleeding Heart and Black Dog.

No doubt she would wish so too--I'm rather handsome. But again, I'm a married man.

You are gutless Bleeding Heart. You come on here to sneer at someone thinking you are superior to them and then

I was pointing out the regressive attitude of one Ms. Kay, frothing right-wing journalist extraordinaire.

You say it wasn't about her; and yet my post, to which you responded, was about her. So, think on that a little, if you're able.

Her view on rape is that of provocatively-dressed women turning men on and then getting attacked.

I only pointed out the truth--that this is a fallacious view of rape.

Since it's an incontestable truth, I can't imagine why you would disagree.

You must be brain dead. I do not come on this board like you posing

Sure you do. This entire post of yours (and some of your others) reek of sanctimony and self-righteousness.

A pretty unfortunate fact, given your attempted argument here.

The rest is just your ranting about spitting in my face and other delights, so there's no need for further comment.

Date rape is often committed by "normal men."

Look all you want.

Judge all you want. But only creeps touch without consent.

Alcohol, drugs, these things sometimes play into it. It's not always "just creeps;" sometimes it's clouded judgment. Rape isn't just a violent act committed in a dark alley, and perhaps that's what Ms. Ford had in mind.

The clothing excuse for rape is ridiculous and disgusting. Men don't turn into rapists because they're horny. A rapist is a violent criminal Sicko.

As I said, there are different circumstances surrounding rape, but I'd be interested in the quote from Ms. Ford where she says clothing is an excuse for rape, or clothing is the cause of rape, or women who dress like whores are asking for it, or to blame, or whatever the accusations seem to be about her comments.

My comments are directed at everyone here making such claims; I'm not singling you out, but quoting you as your post is the most recent.

Ms. Ford had the sense to retract and apologize.

The way I read it, she wasn't so much "retracting" as clarifying what she meant.

From what I've read, at least 70-80% of the women who have been raped know their assailants, even though people tend to think of rape as a violent act, in a dark alley, by a stranger.

Perhaps it's not PC to tell young women (they make up the largest percentage of victims) that how they dress might be endangering themselves, but it seems to me that Ms. Ford was more concerned about protecting young women from being a potential victim than she was about being PC.

I think many parents give their kids the same advice - not to dress too provocatively. Why is that?

A series of decisions need to be made to decide to show off your entire body to the world with the intention of making them horny (IE, dressing like a slut)

These are bad decisions, and show a lack of quality decision making and proper judgement.

I think people associate it with bad things happening to you (like rape) as if you lack proper judgement, you may be more likely to put yourself in a situation where you are not safe.

I'm glad you mentioned these things because people often forget that.

It may even be higher than that, but this is true as well.

Granted, you haven't taken this position yourself--you seem to be just explaining what Ford was saying--but I can't help but feel that your acceptance of her words is implied.

Let's make something perfectly clear here: rape is never the fault of the victim.

You say Ms. Ford is concerned with protecting young women from being a potential victim, but everyone is a potential victim for rape. "Modest" dress, whatever the hell that even means, does not somehow make a woman immune to potentially being raped, otherwise women covered head-to-toe in Islamic countries would never or very rarely be raped and women in Canada wouldn't be raped in the winter when they're fully covered from the elements. Moreover, children would never be raped, since they don't generally dress provocatively. Rape has absolutely nothing to do with the way a person dresses. This victim blaming crap needs to stop.

This victim blaming crap needs to stop.

No one is blaming the victim - and sometimes the 'claiming that people are blaming the victim crap' has to stop. As I said, I would be more concerned with helping prevent a rape, and that most definitely includes date rape (if not almost exclusively), than I would about being PC. If someone interprets that as "blaming the victim," the problem lies with them, and they could be doing some harm because they may make people afraid to step up with some sound advice.

Yes, sometimes rape occurs even when the woman is covered from head to toe, and in such instances, obviously provocative clothing had nothing to do with it; but rapes occur under different circumstances, and a scantily clad young girl may be more likely to make an intoxicated date lose his head and control - as date rape generally does occur because the guy is horny.

As I said, many parents don't let their young teen girls dress too provocatively. I'll ask again. Why do you think that is?

Posted

I've been witness to the aftermath (bloody nose, yelling) of an attempted date rape in a college dorm. The targeted girl was the only one in the room wearing pants VS a miniskirt. If you want to rape someone, pants won't stop you. Luckily the 6 or so other girls in the room fought the guy off, the targeted girl was flopped on a bed and was fine the next morning.

I stand by my statement that girls sometimes make bad decisions that get themselves into trouble, and those who do are more likely to make bad decisions in other areas of their lives.

A scantily clad young girl doesn't MAKE him do anything.

A rapist MAKES his own choices.

You ARE blaming victims.
