The skill set required to take a car that can go 200 mph around a banked oval 2 or 3 wide is different than that of driving an F1 car around a road course.

Indycar is hybrid of both sports.

I think a good comparison would be the differences between Road Racing, (a la Tour de France) Mountain Biking and Track Cycling in a Velodrome. All use a bike, all require vastly different skill sets.

here is a list of three types of cars on the same circuit-Circuit Gilles Villeneuve

F1

Fastest Laps

1:13.622 Rubens Barrichello (2004) - Lap record

1:16.367 Fernando Alonso (2007)

Lowest top lap

1:20.092 Scott Speed, STR-Ferrari (2007)

Champ Car

Fastest Laps

1:20.238 Dario Franchitti (2002)

1:22.325 Sebastien Bourdais (2006)

NASCAR (Busch series)

Fastest Laps

1:43.198 Ron Fellows (2007) -

the numbers don't lie, F1 has the fastest cars and better drivers...

Yeah but that course in Montreal was built for F1 cars. I'm sure an F1 car can't beat an Indycar around an oval, nor should it should because F1 cars aren't built for that.

Hey Canada just won a Bronze in High Jump. (FIST PUMP!!!)

There's a Canadian woman with fabulous abs that looks to have a good shot to medal in 100m hurdles.

But then again there's that Canadian Woman's Soccer farce, Tara Whitten finished fourth in some track cycling race, and Simon Whitfield, the flag bearer crashed in the triathalon.

incompetence...this is a problem I have with FIFA and women's soccer, FIFA wants to be politically correct and have women officiate women's matches regardless if they're competent...a game of this level they should've had the best referee available which would likely been an experienced male, had they brought in a male official from England's premier league that call is never made...I was stunned, when it was made I had no idea what the call was and neither did the match commentators, there was no blatant infringement of the time wasting rule...

Yes, a male referree would have been much more skilled (due to practice) at fixing the match.

F1 cars produce more power and weigh less so if set up for an oval I think they would indeed be faster.

It's not the countries that win the medals, it's the athletes.

Perhaps so but all the olympic athletes are picked by their respective national olympic committees to represent the country so they can take some credit as well, can't they?

no doubt ;)

Glad to see the Women are not being penalized for the outburst to the media. Had they suspended Sinclair it would have been horrible for the team.

As it is now, I sure hope they are moving on and prepping to play their hearts out against France. It would be a shame to go out easy and not get even a Bronze when before the tournament started a Bronze would have been quite acceptable.

FTFY.

Team Canada was dreadful in Turin, They got ousted in the Quarters by Russia, if memory serves me correctly. Served them right for putting Bryan McCabe on the team I suppose.

The difference is Gold is the only thing that matters in Ice Hockey. After losing the way they did to the Czech's in 1998, I doubt Gretzky an Co. really cared enough about a Bronze. That Tournament sucked all the games were at 2am here.

A Bronze is fine for this team considering how they did in the last World Cup. Sinclaire seems to be Canada's best athlete in these Olympics.

If they do end up snagging Bronze, I'd vote for her over the Trampoline chick that got our only Gold to this point, (and likely for the whole Olympics) to carry the flag at the closing ceremony.

it'll be difficult to win the 3rd place spot after the horrible way they lost the US match...it's one thing to lose a match because of the luck of the bounce or just a closely contested fixture but it's entirely different losing because of something you can't control the officiating...the term which best describes this one used by the English for horrific soccer losses, "gutted"...the psychological let down is hard to overcome knowing they deserve to be in the final, a battle for third is an anti-climatic slap in the face...I won't be disappointed if they lose because they've already proved themselves to be at very least the 2nd best team there ...

That's not true. They had 10 minutes left in that game and had coughed up the lead twice already. That game was not won by any means. Those calls were BS but they still lost that game.

They still need to perform to make people rejoice over their performance in these Olympics.

If they can score 3 times on Hope Solo I'm sure they can put a few behind whatever Frog is playing for France. :D

In WC play all that matters is 1st as well, the matches held to decide 3rd place aren't strongly contested neither side much cares anymore and they put in a half-assed effort, the ultimate prize the one that matters is gone...a medal at the O's may different incentive we'll see I guess...

picking Sinclair as flag bearer would send a nice subtle FU message to both IOC and FIFA...

it's not losing that is the problem but how they lost, the americans didn't defeat them the officials did...

the French are a good side who won't be as mentally beaten down as the canadians, it'll take a huge mental effort to comeback from the loss to the US...

so some vindication of a sort for the womens soccer team...

FIFA was to investigate the comments made by some of our team but have delayed the investigation until after the bronze game, this is unusual because whenever disciplinary action is required for events in a tournament the hearing comes before the next game so player suspensions if called for take immediate effect...holding the hearing after tells me FIFA agrees Canada was unfairly treated and further disciplinary action would be doubly unfair to the team...FIFA can't be seen to not support it's officials but the unspoken ;) message here the match official got it wrong...

also referees are assessed every match and the best are kept for the next games until there is only two sets of officials left for the final two matches the best rated getting the final, the official from mondays game will no longer take part in any more games...no doubt her assessment did not go well...

Both the Moscow-games in 1980 and the LA-games in 1984 were both tainted by the boycotts. The latter boycott was nothing short of a tit-for-tat reaction.

Did Canada boycott Moscow? I think they did. Some countries did go there but under the olympic flag, which in my opinion is just rubbish. You either go there or you don't. There is no sitting on the fence.

The LA-games and the boycott of those games destroyed weight-lifting and wrestling and some athletic sports as well. A Finn called Juha Tiainen won the hammer gold-medal in LA. Had all the Russian and other East-Europeans been there he would have struggled to make it to the top 10.

Black people run fast.

Why don't they just shut down all the track & field events having to do with running/jumping and give all the medals to Africa.

Well they did it! France dominated most of the game but Canada scored in stoppage time of the second half to win the Bronze.

This is probably the best medal of these Olympics for Canada.

a few years back I came across an interesting stat...the top 500 fastest 100m times all belong to people of west-african ancestry...the problem for africans is they don't have the cash/opportunity to develop their athletic potential...those living in the western hemisphere mostly americans have those opportunities...

there is a definite genetic advantage to being west african when it comes to sprinting events...while eastern africans have seem to have some genetic advantages when it comes to distance events...

Jamaica seems to be doing well to develop great sprinters.

coming back from the psychological kick in teeth they took on monday is a huge accomplishment this one time where IMO bronze is as good as gold they deserved something for their performance...

I didn't see the game yet but it may be that france was the best team of the tournament, they also outplayed Japan the current world champions and to finish forth has got to hurt...a more deserving final game would have been canada playing france for the gold...

Soccer and Cricket is huge there too.

Donovan Bailey and Ben Johnson were both Jamaican born so yeah Jamaicans are pretty dominant in sprinting.

That being said, Usain Bolt is an extraordinary athlete.

Why? Japan beat Canada and The USA beat France in the early rounds. Japan and the USA are the top two teams. Canada is definitely an up and coming team. They finished with no points in the World Cup last year and this Scottish coach Herdman was brought and and the improvements are noticeable to all.

I heard someone joke on the radio that perhaps he should coach the Leafs. :D

France seems to be a technically great team but you gotta be able to score to win. Canada's defense was clearly up to the test in this game.
