SAN PEDRO CUTUD, Philippines — Thousands of people gathered in Philippine villages to watch devotees being nailed to crosses as they marked Good Friday by re-enacting Jesus Christ’s suffering, a yearly rite that continues even as church leaders discourage the practice.

Nine men wearing crowns of twigs on their heads were crucified for a few minutes by villagers dressed as Roman centurions in northern Pampanga province’s San Pedro Cutud village. At least eight other people were nailed to crosses in neighboring villages.

But rather than cut into the vacation allotment there should be extra days given to all employees, called "cultural holidays" or something like that, which the employee can take off at a time of their choosing. There's no excuse for shutting down the whole city on a religious holiday. What if I ain't no christian.

The "cultural holidays" where employees can take off at a time of their choosing would likely result in basically "shutting down" businesses as the majority of employees would be taking off at the same times - Christmas, for example. If their aren't enough employees left to run the place, the business would have to shut down.

As a non-religious person, I don't object to having statutory holidays on religious holy-days. I don't know anyone who does.

"We hope to get people's attention," Childs said. "It was a calculated risk. Are we willing to offend some to get the attention of other folks who have no regard for Jesus, the church, the gospel or Easter? That's a risk we're always willing to take."

Yes, I'm sure he got the attention of a lot of folks. But somehow I doubt this did much to encourage people to attend his church. How does the thought process work?

"Please come to our Easter service. Everyone is welcome!"

"Uh, no thanks. I'm not religious. I don't believe in it."

"Oh yeah, well here's a picture of a dead bunny. Change your mind?"

Just bizarre.

It's not attention that Pastor Childs needs to bring to his church. It's credibility. People aren't staying away from church because they haven't heard the message, they're staying away because they don't feel church is relevant to their lives. Sending out pictures of a dead bunny will do nothing to change that opinion, and would probably even exacerbate it.

Yes, I'm sure he got the attention of a lot of folks. But somehow I doubt this did much to encourage people to attend his church. How does the thought process work?

He's getting a lot more attention than he could ever hoped for. Perhaps it did encourage some like-minded individuals to attend. In a country of 300+ million, there's bound to be a few nuts. It's attention such as he's getting that gives them validity - in their minds. I think this one would have been better left out of the limelight - think of all the kiddies who are now seeing the dead bunny all over the internet.

The question I have faced the most has been this: “Any regrets? Would you do it again?” And I have quickly responded with “YES!”

Now, frankly, I’m not so sure. Not because I don’t believe in the message we wanted to send out. Not because our motives were wrong. And not because I’m shrinking or caving in because of harsh criticism. But if MUCH of the criticism is coming from the very people my own heart longs to reach, THAT stops me in my tracks. I could pretend otherwise. I could stick my jaw out, think up some zinger come-backs, and pretend I’m “earnestly contending for the faith.”

Listen, if fussy over-churched little Pharisees slam us, I honestly could not care less. If their unbelieving neighbors say that we’ve pushed them FURTHER from faith, that will keep me up at night. If our attempt at edgy irreverent outreach cast our church and Christianity in a bad light, blame me. Just me. And I apologize. If you actually did have a small child get traumatized by what you received in the mail from us, please believe that was absolutely not our intent, and I personally apologize for that too.
