Army Guy Posted February 7, 2012 Report Posted February 7, 2012 (edited) With the US airforce doing some downsizing, this may be a good time to purchase some Used Aircraft. And save a shit load of cash in doing so...Some of the Aircraft i was looking at was the C-27J which we were looking at for SAR, but also there are some C-130H which could also be incorporated into SAR as well. Or perhaps converted some of them into other specialized Aircraft, which we don't currently have. These Aircraft have been on the Canadian project books for some time,and by purchasing them it may enable us to save alot of funding or perhaps allow us to purchase more than the Minimum. The list is extensive on the amount of different types avaialable, including A-10, C27J, C130H, C-5A, global hawks, Etc . Not sure why the cost would be high, as it is stated in the link below the A/C can be moded for the SAR role, or have a palletized system to allow it to be used for other roles as well. On board sensors already surpass what is on our current fleet of SAR. link Not sure why the Airforce would not jump on this, as it has serveral advantages to it, the A/C are only a couple years old, they would be available in short order, at a much cheaper price, with perhaps the ability to get more A/C for our monie, And perhaps adding to our capabilities such as a small tactical transport aircraft, be it on operations such as Afghan, or a cheaper solution to an Airbourne troop platform as in JTF 2 or CSOR...The US airforce must have a large parts inventory aswell...but shortfalls could be fixed with company. I would hate to see this option to go down in flames because we have or want new A/C that may or may not be in service when they are required... On top of the C-27J they have a large seltion of other Aircraft as well, C-130H are also available, yes they are older aircraft But they are still H models and nobody flys their hercs longer than we do....we are the kings of making hercs last forever...perhaps a rebuild or SLEP project and these to could be added to our inventory.... I added the Herc as they are as well mentioned in the FWSAR project... Global hawks are mentioned , going in storage but perhaps if the right offer was made , i thought we where looking for a UAV to do northern surv....maybe i'm wrong... So you are against the govt paying for the security of Canadians, but support all Canadian taxpayers paying for an enterprise that will get commuters in Toronto to work cheaply? Why are you assuming that Britain was a crooked seller? You KNOW how dumb Canadian governments can be! We were the ones who bought them and then left them to rust for a couple of years in dock before we finally got off our asses to get them home. We had the opportunity to inspect them before buying and I doubt if the Brits tried to hide anything. Complicated ships like those submarines don't like to be abandoned for years with no daily routine maintenance. It's like leaving your car out in the rain and snow for a few years and then expecting it to start and be in as good shape as when you parked it. Dumb! Maybe once again, our guys were just stupid, Topaz? Did we have experienced Canadian submariners inspect them and have the final decision or was that done by typical Canadian bureaucrats and politicians, who last saw submarines as children in their own bath tubs? I'm not saying you're wrong Topaz. Just that you are quick to make an assumption. Before I did such a thing I would have googled it a bit, especially when our governments have always done things in the dumbest manner. I am POSITIVE the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs and Panetta both said, as well as Obama, the airforce was not being cut at all as it's integral to their leaner armed forces capable of packing the same punch. What do you think. link link The 20 odd C-27s they’re retiring would be a coup for FWSAR and to replace the Totters…….A capable aircraft, what was short listed by the air force for FWSAR, had on the cheap would be a great deal….That said, aside from maintenance contracts, little to no industrial offsets will ensure it never happens…….. As for the A-10s I see a real opportunity, both in terms for the taxpayer, the military and the Government…..reduce the F-35 purchase by 10-15 aircraft (roughly a ¼), thus saving ~ several billion and purchase three dozen Warthogs and put them through (As was planned by the USAF) the SLEP done by Boeing, thus making them viable into the 2030s (Perhaps beyond?)….In exchange for industrial offsets from Boeing suppliers and subsidiaries in Canada.
