Moonlight Graham Posted October 26, 2011 Report Posted October 26, 2011 Besides the meat-flute or rusty trumpet? I play guitar, electric and acoustic. Mostly anything rock-based. Hard rock/metal/alt/indie/classic rock...whatever, classical guitar is also sweet. Been playing for about 5-6 years. Never had a gig, just jam with buddies. I'd also love to learn the cello. I used to play a lot of folk guitar - Lightfoot's Canadian Railroad Trilogy, James Taylor and such. Still blow a little blues harp. I make my living repairing and building guitar amplifiers. Long ago I had to accept that I was never going to be a great guitarist, since I spent more time on soldering. We all have only so much time in our lives and with time taken up by making a living, chasing women and eventually having a family I just couldn't practice enough AND keep learning and soldering amps! It's like how many people can become great racing car drivers but how many can also find the time to become master racing engine mechanics? Few of us are like Buckaroo Banzai, being a musician, a brain surgeon and a racing car driver setting land speed records. However, knowing a bit of guitar, with my barre chords for party riffs and such, helps me immeasurably with both working on amps and understanding my customers' descriptions of fault symptoms with their gear. GostHacked Posted October 27, 2011 Report Posted October 27, 2011 I play drums and bass (not very well though), and well my instrument really is a computer with FL studio. I do electronic music. Quote

Guitars - electric, dobro, 12-string, bass; a little cheesy keyboard on my Roland Juno 106 from time to time. Dabbled in mandolin in my Zeppelin stage back in the day. Been in rock bands, did gigs, been on the radio, did home recordings, etc. It's all overrated unless you are getting paid well. Heck, just getting paid was a treat. Nowadays I just jam with my kids and their friends, enough Jimi Hendrix behind-the-back stuff to piss them off. Oh, listen, he can play the blues... One thing I cannot do is play drums despite my best, most serious efforts. Drummers, as nuts as they usually are, have my highest respect. Drummers and the sound-guy/roadie. Bass players on the other hand... Quote

Brian Eno's 'Thursday Afternoon' is one of the best pieces of music I have ever heard. Absolutely breathtaking. Love most of Tangerine Dream's earlier stuff and Jean Michel Jarre's 'Oxygene.' My kids tried to get me into Chemical Brothers and Crystal Method, but I am too old I guess. Quote
wyly Posted October 28, 2011 Report Posted October 28, 2011 sadly nothing cool just the recorder...that's why I bought wyly jr a really cool custom electric guitar so he can impress the ladies(not easy to do with a recorder ) ... his teacher says he's going to be a player, that he has the gift, not that it matters any I just enjoy listening to him play... Nothing wrong with a recorder! Ask Jethro Tull, or some early albums by Traffic. If you prefer 'easy listening' electronic music, look into lounge-house with a little jazz, like St. Germain. Some other nice loungey stuff is John Digweed with his 'transitions' series. I'll see if I can dig up more stuff like that. Some of my faves for house in general are Deadmau5(toronto), Wolfgang Gartner(L.A.), Carl Cox(U.K.), Marcus Schultz(toronto) Quote

Wild Bill Posted October 28, 2011 Report Posted October 28, 2011 (edited) two musicians walk in to a bar with their instruments, one plays a recorder the other plays guitar, who gets laid? Neither! Only drummers get laid! Besides, there's always some folkie chicks who'll lay a recorder player. There's rumours about what it does for your lips... GostHacked Posted October 28, 2011 Report Posted October 28, 2011 Those that do play instruments, how long you been playing and what do you consider your skill level at? I find it interesting to see how people gauge themselves on their abilities. For me, I an amateur at both the drums and bass, but I do pick up the bass now and then just to work out some bassline I eventually want to throw into song. Also it's fun to use FL studio to create a beat and just jam away with the bass to the beats. Another good question is how much time per week do you play? Quote
cybercoma Posted November 6, 2011 Report Posted November 6, 2011 In my time I played piano, tenor sax, bass and guitar. I never really accomplished anything with it and stopped playing altogether years ago. It's a shame. Some days I wish I had kept it up. Quote

WWWTT Posted November 9, 2011 Report Posted November 9, 2011 Guitar, bass and vocals here. Giged alot in the 90's and the fender jazz/peavy amp are long gone now.(too many pot smokers and boozers for my liking) Still got the fender acoustic tuned up in the corner, from time to time I may work on the vox but its hard to keep the vox in good shape(control and range) without regular practice. kactus Posted November 9, 2011 Report Posted November 9, 2011 What, at the same time? Nope Never was good at multi-tasking. Learned to play piano at school a long time ago. I used to own a drum and still play it occasionally. Quote
