bush_cheney2004 Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 The Obama state visit to the UK has been a hit with the Queen, as she pulled out all the fine china and glassware. Michelle looks great! Queen Elizabeth used her speech at a state dinner honouring U.S. President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle to celebrate common bonds between the United States and Britain that she says go beyond military and diplomatic ties. The Queen opened the lavish state dinner at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday by recalling fond memories of her earlier meetings with the Obamas. And she said that the U.S. and Britain in most cases see world problems in the same light... But reading the comments from the CBC.ca story, some Canadians are a bit ticked off that not only do the "warmongers" get along smashingly, but Canada never got such attention from the Queen. http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/story/2011/05/24/obama-royals-britain.html Quote Economics trumps Virtue.

Smallc Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 I'm not sure I understand the pont of this thread. Outside of the UK, Canada is the country the Queen has spent the most time in. We're her country, and she;s our Queen. How she treats a foreign leader on a state visit to the UK has nothing to do with Canada. Quote
Sir Bandelot Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 I think for most Canadians the Queen is just an abstraction, she's a picure on our currency. Aside from that we hardly know anything about her, and generally don't pay much attention. Americans on the other hand do seem unusually more fascinated, as noted on previous trips/ visits of the British royals. It must be the novelty thing. Quote

That is why it is in the "US Politics" section on a Canadian web forum. That some Canadians are irritated by her lavish display and accolades (compared to Canada) is icing on the cake. sharkman Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 After the Obamas have been mistreating the British relationship with slights/etc, I'll bet the old dame thought she'd show them how you treat heads of state. Embarrass them with kindness. Quote

Embarrass them with kindness. Seems a little ineffectual. At any rate, it's doubtful that the Obamas meant any disrespect. No reason to get worked up, certainly. sharkman Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 (edited) Not sure if you are aware of the slights the Obama administration has delivered on purpose to Britian since 2008. Giving the PM a DVD set was embarrassing and inappropriate, but that's just one thing of many. Obama started his administration off with a bang by returning the bust of Churchill to the British government without warning, blindsiding them. A month later, March 2009 I believe, Obama received the PM on a state visit. He did this by not meeting him at the airport as presidents have done regularly with British PMs. It was on this visit that he gave Brown, a man with very bad eye sight, the DVD set. It is doubtful that the set would even play on British DVD players as they are region 2 and American DVDs are made for region 1. By comparison, the Browns showered the Obamas with gifts. Later in April Michelle touched the Queen, something that any head of state would know not to do, and it is a serious no-no. Next, Obama planned a big Memorial Day event while on his European tour, but he left the Queen off the guest list. She is the only living head of state to have served during WWII and Britian was of course a major player in defeating Hitler and saving Europe. It was during the same tour that Obama bowed to the King of Saudi Arabia. Do you understand the significance of his treatment of 2 royalties? Bowing to the King of Saudi Arabia and Emperor of Japan, but the Queen of England gets a pat on the back when she isn't being ignored? The weight of these incidents adds up to an Obama administration that is sending a message. If I was the Queen I would have not gone to the event I invited the Obamas to, then I would have been seen walking my dogs instead. Edited May 25, 2011 by sharkman Quote

As I just mentioned to you on another thread, it may well be that awful, civilization-destroying event in which Michelle Obama placed her hand on the Queen's back. Not at all disrespectful, in my opinion, but apparently some people disagree. Surely that can't be what he meant to when he referred to "the slights the Obama administration has delivered on purpose to Britian since 2008." That was just Michele Obama, not "the Obama administration," and it's hardly a "slight" or going on "since 2008." I'm really interested in hearing what he is referring to. Quote
