You forgot the Newfoundlanders who always want money, and those people in the Far North who get tax advantages.

But the big money goes to Ontario:

OTTAWA (AFP) — Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Monday a 9.5-billion-dollar bailout of General Motors was "regrettable, but necessary," given the alternative devastation of Canada's manufacturing sector.

[And please don't say that GM has paid the money back. They haven't.]

Yeah, seems to me Danny Williams was always hollering about how unfair things were to the Newfies. "We won't settle for less!"

Ontarions, of course, never have to whine for anything; they get their way without having to complain.

Actually the question should be "What do the leaders think about about Alberta and Quebec?"

Haven't seen them much in Alberta since this election campaign started.Harper even seems to be taking Albertans for granted and the other leaders know they are a waste of time so why bother with the fourth largest province in Canada when they only vote for one party.

Who paid for/stepped in when Hibernia was about to fail?

And who is now offering loan guarantees for tunnels?

And what about changes to the equalization calculation?

The government of the day bought an equity stake in Hibernia, they've easily made all their money back and now don't want to give up the equity stake.

You should probably look up what a loan guarantee is seeing it costs $0.

Equalization doesn't make much difference to us now seeing our government knows what to do with our money unlike yours. You live in the biggest welfare province there ever was with you corrupt socialist governments that cry separation anytime something doesn't go your own way.

How does the rest of Canada deal with the incessant whining coming from Albertans and separatist Quebeckers?

Hey, we Albertans don't whine! Quebeckers do more than enough, thank you very much. We do get rather miffed when the greenies, Liberals, and the socialist trash our province in order to score cheap points with the other envious. Albertans are just as aware of and concerned with environmental issues as others. And, we're tired of underachieving have-nots taking our enormous contribution to their equalization pogie and then giving us the finger.

Nittany Lions, eh? My daughter married a Penn State engineer they are living in New Jersey.

August does that compare to the ANNUAL $6-7B bailout Quebec gets, most of it from Ontario taxpayers? Methinks not....

There is alot of things you do not methinks...

What is the share Quebec gets from the federal ANNUAL nuclear program? nada. If we start a breakdown of every federal programs, we discover that Quebec doesn't get much from the federal after all. The equalization is just a smokedwall to compensate the unbalanced other federal programs. Ironically, the biggest losers overall are those who receive the most from the equalization... the maritimes.

The big one is Indian and Northern Affairs. It has an annual budget of about $7 billion little of which is spent in Quebec - but Quebec taxpayers contribute as any other.

In hindsight, it is easy to say that "they've easily made all their money back". At a critical point, someone richer stepped in and gave a helping hand. How many people wish for such...

As to the loan guarantee, if it's worth nothing then why is Newfoundland asking for it?

Posc, I think you have to live longer, negotiate a mortgage or two and understand what it means to have a guarantee. For a start, you might think of your own student loan and why you have such favourable terms.

Standard Quebec-bashing is unbecoming, and boring. If you want to criticize Quebec society, please be more original. Edited by August1991

Actually, I heard the figures today on the radio. Alberta and Ontario each have net contributions of around $20B. Quebec is a net benefactor to the tune of $8B, all federal spending taken into account.

A loan guarantee costs $0 for the federal government but it saves millions for the provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia, who both rquested it. Jean Charest could have easily asked for the same thing. You're also one to talk about bashing another society, you're doing just that. Standard "Quebec bashing", where do you people get this stuff too? The only difference in Quebeckers is that the majority of you speak french, which people speak in all other parts of Canada and around the world. I will never understand why people in Quebec think "their culture" is any different then other parts of Cabnada.

For the time being.

Isn't that long enough, guyser? They have oil and gas reserves for a couple of centuries. Nobody has yet totaled up all the shale gas potential, either.

So when you say "for the time being" that could mean 300 years!

That's lots of time to develop new assets. I don't think Alberta would ever go bankrupt.

The plain fact is that Ottawa has treated Alberta very poorly over the years. Now Alberta has the ability to go it alone, or to separate and join the USA. In a way, Ottawa FORCED them to become strong enough they wouldn't need Canada anymore!

It surprises me that even now it seems most Albertans still are proud Canadians and have no desire to leave Confederation. Still, to keep kicking them seems a very stupid and short sighted thing to do.

I did not mean anything truly negative by it, but things are cyclical and Alta has needed help in the past.

But yeah, they may be good for 300 yrs or so , but thats only a blip in time ;)

I have no bone w Alta , my family would disown me, lots of them were born and raised there.

Separate, yes...join the USA, no. It must be election time in Canada! ;)

Absolute bloody nonsense. Nuclear? Why not try aeronautics? Quebec wouldn't have an aerospace industry without all that federal money. Bombardier would have gone broke decades ago. Then there's the expensive dairy plans which guarantee huge payments to dairy farmers, most of whom are in Quebec. We could buy milk from New York at half the price. In every federal program, Quebec gets at least its share and usually more than its share due to incessant whining. We even move federal government buildings all the way to Shawinigan, Quebec, Trois Rivieres, Montreal, etc, not to mention the ones in Gatineau. Money for ports, bridges highways, airports, far more than anyone else gets.

The only reason Quebec hasn't separated is that despite all the sniveling and whining and complaints in public, the Quebec elites know in private that without the money coming from the other provinces they'd be bankrupt their first year of independence.

Who's kicking them?

That's what I wonder. When were they last kicked? By pretty much every account I've heard, it's been decades...and it doesn't surprise me that WB doesn't understand how people can see a country for more than money and related subjects.
