Who pays the corporate taxes wyly , we do , if the corps are going to pay more ,they just dump it on to the consumer , that is you.

if I as a consumer don't buy their products I don't pay anything...giving corporations a tax break means the shortfall must be transferred to the individual whether they consume or not...

So you are just going to quit buying, alot of help you are for the economy. Anyways that is a dumb answer.

hmmm I should make up for corporate tax breaks for products that I never use so millionaires(many of them foreign) can have higher profit margins, wow that sounds fair? ...apparently you've never heard of our consumer tax? GST? PST? ...
Anyways that is a dumb answer.
the lack of an intelligent response from you is what's dumb... Edited by wyly

I dunno about all this, seems to me Vic Toews is in town this week talking about the feds funding for the new Bomber stadium that's being built with 100% tax monies (Municipal "right", Provincial "NDP", FEDERAL "CONS") since Asper was turfed out...

Square pegs in round holes anyone?

the more I think about it Ignatieff may have made a master stroke with this announcement, even if the libs don't gain a seat in quebec he may cut into conservative vote in the quebec region denying them any seats as well...appeal to the basic greed within voters everywhere wanting something for themselves, winterpeg, regina any city that wants a new facility...

As far as Winnipeg goes, off the top of my head there's:

- a new building

- a much stronger dollar (IIRC it was around 70 cents US, if not lower, when the Jets and Nords moved.)

- a salary cap and revenue sharing

- a billionaire ownership group.

Tax structure is much more business friendly now too. From what I've read, at the time the Jets were paying more in taxes than all of the other teams in the NHL combined.

There's a whole sub-field of economists who specialize in looking at the impact of pro sports. The consensus being that they offer marginal economic benefit to the communities in which they are based and definitely not enough to offset the subsidies and transfers that inevitable go along with them.
Local politicians argue for government subsidies (to a pro-sport arena) - as long as the money comes from a higher level of taxpayer. Everyone loves to spend other people's money.

Economic impact? Job creation?

IMV, we have still not well defined the role of government in a civilized society.

Some interesting comments, I still think it was stupid to reopen that can of worms, but when taken in context, not all that harmful overall...

Taking the new Winnipeg Stadium into the picture, I think Winnipeg got "short changed" though, consisering it's going to be a UNIVERSITY Stadium along with being a "football" stadium...

What bugs me is that it's not an enclosed stadium, for more BIGGER events in Winnipeg, that doesn't make a lot of forward looking economic sense...

I think some funding for an NHL rink in Quebec City is great - economic stimulus, raise all those tax dollars, placate the masses of pining hockey fans... and one big giant FIP logo just as people come into the building.

But the best part of this is that at centre ice before every game or event, they could have Michael Ignatieff's mug there on the jumbo screen while underneath is says:

Michael Ignatieff. See? He did come back for you.

In French of course.

Actually, the Winnipeg corporate base is quite large for a Canadian city, as illustrated. Winnipeg also already has its ownership group in place, including David Thomson, the richest guy in Canada.

It's a different city than it was in the 1990s, and the Canadian dollar is a different currency.

The ducks are all in a row. The only question is which failed southern franchise (Coyotes or Thrashers) moves here.

If the Manitoba/Winnpipeg economy is so strong, why is the province the only Western province that eternally requires billions in equalization money every year? Why are there so many skilled workers from MB now residing in AB?

But let us move past our own ponderings, why hasn't the NHL leapt at the opportunities to relocate one of their many struggling teams to Winnipeg? The answer is simple: they've done the math too and would rather not have yet another flop there.

Having said that, they may well allow a move. They have done dumber things, quite a few of them.

Oh, and I need to adjust my math. Season tickets in Winnipeg will be around $15,000 a pair on average, not including any playoffs. That is after tax money too for the ordinary patron, or around $20-$25k before tax income required. Every year, Forever. Ain't likely in Winnipeg, and you need about 6,000 to 7,000 families with that kind of coin.

Personally I don't much care whether we get an NHL team in Winnipeg or not... The Arena's been built and it's AHL franchise is doing just fine...

Winnipeg back when raised over 10 Million Dollars a couple of hundred of which was mine, without any "Guarantees" to try and keep the Jets in Winnipeg in the first place...

If/when Winnipeg gets an NHL franchise back it'll be just fine, but thanks for caring...

As for the WHY no NHL team is in Winnipeg, one word, Bettman, says it all, the "economics" are all in place, and they do not involve any tax payer money except on the INCOME side...

Um, the NHL can't unilaterally move a team. They've generally bent over backwards to prevent teams from being moved, but there's an argument that can be made for stability. Phoenix is a unique situation because it's the only NHL team actually costing the league money.

Having said that, they may well allow a move. They have done dumber things, quite a few of them.

So they haven't moved because they've done the math and it won't work, but they might move anyway because they are stupid. Cool story, bro.

$7,500 for season tickets? From what orifice are you extracting these figures?

If equalization determines whether provinces qualify as NHL-worthy, I guess the Leafs and the Habs have got to go.

More people need to vote with their brains instead of their hearts. Voting with your brains results in a Conservative vote. Voting with your heart involves fantasy and romanticized ideas, it brings these voters to the Liberals or the NDP.

Good to hear we need more people in Canada who are open to all progressive parties. I think you will make the right decision when you look their plans.

That's actually quite true...

Since the NDP will do as they've always done, absolutely nothing, since they'll never have the "power" to do anything at all...

Ergo, you won't waste any money, just your VOTE... B)

You know the Liberals have lost the election when they go to the "NDP will never win" argument. This however is the first I have seen them use it before 2 weeks out. They must really be screwed if this is all they got now. No wonder the NDP are beating them in the West and Quebec.

You're the one that put it out there, not me, I simply AGREED with your statement... :D

You wouldn't be having a problem facing facts like most NDPers now would you?

You seem a little too upset, but don't worry, Layton knows what he's doing and I'm sure he'll find a way to save himself and you from having to "put up or shut up"... ;)

Ever since the NDP has existed the LPC has been playing that card and I think our electoral success speaks for itself.

Yah but how far you play it out shows how your results will be. In 2004 Martin waited till the last week of the election, in 2006 it was 2 weeks out, in 2008 Dion used it the first day, it truly shows how bad it is for you guys when Liberals including the Leader are playing it before the election. Ouch big loss coming eh?
