A Canadian who went to AFGHANSTAN, as a TOURIST was captured by the Taliban and now the government has to decide how to get him back. This guy is either stupid or works for the government! Who goes to that country for a vacation????? Of course, he could be a journalist looking for a story from the Taliban? http://ca.news.yahoo.com/canadian-confirmed-missing-afghanistan-taliban-claim-capture-20110227-114005-246.html

I guess the question now is, should Canada attempt to rescue him or negotiate something, and if so at what cost ?

Let him stew in his own juices. He was stupid enough to go there, despite a constant state of warfare. Canada should turn her back on that idiot.

Leave him there to rot, these extreme adventure people ,just to do something to give them bragging rights, probably thought a story like that might get him laid.

A government has a duty to do what it can for its citizens when they get into trouble in other countries, including the stupid ones. You don't want it arbitrarily picking and choosing who it will help. It could be you someday.

Beat me to the post. It's interesting to see this perception that someone could be unworthy of assistance when kidnapped by known murderers because "(s)he should have known better". No one in this thread even knows the circumstances of this person's visit, other than what the news chooses to print. Yet, we get calls to "leave him there to rot" or "stew in his own juices". Strangely, society no longer focuses on the criminal, instead we ask why the victim didn't take more precautions. What a horribly disheartening conceptual shift.

Agree with the above, as a citizen he deserves whatever offical help we can offer, whcih may be very little.

The passport office can revoke or refuse to issue a passport, having and holding one is not an automatic right of citizenship. I don't know the circumnstance of this poor guy, but I wish him well.

The government should do something.

It seems to have happened in Germany too...

If only our taliban tourist only knew that it was against the law for Canadians to vacation in Talibananian Afghanistan. This and the reichstag inncidences could have been prevented if only tourists looked more closely into local laws of areas they were travelling to.

It has me wonder if this liberal era youth was still under the impression that a Canadian flag on your backpack gets you love wherever you go. Oh times are changing.

that's what the story was in the G&M, tourist...I know two people who traveled into very dangerous regions, they were totally oblivious to the world around them, neither had any idea there were wars in going on where they were headed...it's hard for most of us to comprehend but there are people out there who have no idea what just occurred in Egypt or what is taking place in Libya...

other than pay a ransom there's bugger all our government can do for him...
