Bitsy Posted December 20, 2010 Report Posted December 20, 2010 A wrong finally righted. More than 14,000 soldiers lost their jobs and their dignity over the last 17 years because they were gay, but there will be no more victims of this injustice. The nation’s military is about to send a message of tolerance and shared purpose to the world — now that political leaders, who voted for legalized bigotry in the armed forces in 1993 and kept it alive since then, have found the strength to stand up and end it. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/20/opinion/20mon1.html?hp Quote

scribblet Posted December 20, 2010 Report Posted December 20, 2010 Or, some in command who might have a problem with a gay soldier, would deliberately put them on the front lines or in danger. I fear that they might become siting ducks for those who have a problem with the issue. Maybe not, hope it doesn't happen. Quote Hey Ho - Ontario Liberals Have to Go - Fight Wynne - save our province
sharkman Posted December 20, 2010 Report Posted December 20, 2010 What this boils down to is the desire to be identified by sexual preference ahead of nationality. It's actually kind of sad. Does the army identify everybody by their sexual preference? No, and they shouldn't, it has nothing to do with serving your country or conducting a war. So now a very small minority will have great influence and favour ahead of everybody else. It's unjust. Quote

No, it's the desire to be able to be a better citizen to your nation by wanting to serve while not having to lie about who you really are. That's nationalism in itself. If you hadn't noticed, yes the Army does identify people by sexual preference. If you're outed, you're out of the military yourself. If sexual preference doesn't matter at all as you've said, why is this a bad thing? I guess you'd say the same thing about the desegregation of the US military. Does the army identify everybody by their sexual preference? No, and they shouldn't, it has nothing to do with serving your country or conducting a war. I'm confused. You seem to suggest the military should not identify people based on their sexual orientation, yet that's exactly what the ban on gays in the military served to do. If you honestly believe that one's sexual orientation "has nothing to do with serving your country or conducting a war", then you should support the repeal of DADT. So now a very small minority will have great influence and favour ahead of everybody else. It's unjust. I'm going to phrase this question as delicately as possible here... What the fuck are you talking about? Quote

sharkman Posted December 20, 2010 Report Posted December 20, 2010 Well since we are playing that game, a knee jerker such as yourself would do real well in the army with that military knee jerk march. Just try not to hit yourself in the chin. Quote

If you think that it "shouldnt matter to the army what they are", then cleary you MUST support the end of a policy that has resulted in 14 thousand troops being fired just for being gay. punked Posted December 21, 2010 Report Posted December 21, 2010 (edited) That's all very nice, but could you answer my question, please? Yah it is awful hard not tell when you come home off a ship and there is your boyfriend waiting for you, or you are reading a letter in your bunk from your partner. Again I point to the case of Sergeant Tracy Cooper-Harris who loved her job but was found out to be a lesbian by other soldiers when she wasn't on duty and by no fault of her own. Know what they did they blackmailed her and told her if she didn't perform sexual favors or they would out her. Sorry we don't live in a bubble no matter how much you wish to and even if no one asks and no one tells someone can be found out and no should have to hide who they are. No one should live in fear looking over their shoulder as they kiss someone they love because maybe someone some where is watching. You are crazy if you think the only way people are found out to be gay is if someone asks or someone tells. Again you sicken me if you support that type of blackmail.
