I wonder when the next invasion comes to another country who going to be the replacement for Khadr.

Are Tibetans killing Chinese?

Should I be killing Russians?

"Canadian" Khadr's country was invaded?

If there's one thing that has been reinforced in the minds of US soldiers over this whole Khadr case is never trust a fifteen year old enemy in a battle zone. The Omar Khadrs of the future who are critically injured in similar incidents will be left to perish.

You say that like it's a bad thing.....

Perhaps some of the horrors- like abuse/murder/destruction of children, if it is to be done at all, should simply be done, without pretense of the support of law, or of possession of moral high ground.

Would it really have been worse for Omar to have died at the scene than.... what his present and future looks like?

I dunno.

At this point it 's time to let him out, the time he spent a Gitmo is more than enough punishment for what he did if guilty.

I'm simply saying it's unlikely we'll see another trial case like Khadr in the future.

I dunno either. Had he died at the scene then we could have said he followed in his father's footsteps almost to a tee, and that would have been it. But if as expected he is released in 8-9 years, there will be plenty of time for Omar to meet his demise the way his daddy did.

Not even close.

Uh ya actually we treat serial killers better than this guy's been treated.

I would be better for us. We would see far more important things on the news.

Seems kind of absurd to charge someone with murder in a war zone. That's like "giving out speeding tickets at the Indianapolis 500" - from Apocalypse Now.

But Treason does make sense to me. He should be charged with High Treason in Canada. And it would seem just and fair that some of the family members hould be charged too, the mother in particular. To let them continue living openly and freely in our society disturbs my conscience.

Mainly because he's a danger to national security - while he's alive.

Murders do happen even during a war.

I think the expectation is that he'll be given credit for time he's been waiting for trial. He'll be released almost immediately once he's in Canada.

Don't be surprised if he emerges as a spokesman for peace and reconciliation in the future.

He's got an eighth grade education and he's blind in one eye. How's he a danger to national security? Did someone slip him national secrets in Guantanamo while no one was looking?

Had Khadr plead guilty right from the start he'd be a free man today. As a fresh faced teenager, I doubt a jury would have delivered a sentence as severe as what he will end up with as a burly and bearded 25 year old. Still, even though he's a confessed murderer it's unlikely he'll receive a sentence as severe as that handed down to other killers. We may know as soon as later today.

What ever happened to the right to a speedy trial? In any event I'm expecting him to be let out pretty much as soon as he get back to Canada.

I'm not sure on that, Harper may come up with something to stop him from coming here and he'll have to go somewhere else. BUT I could be wrong, and Harper may not have a choice but I don't think they will let him go free after spending a year in a US jail, if he alive to get out of jail. I'm sure the family will be watched more closely after he is free.

True. If Omar comes here Harper loses election.

My guess would be that poor, innocent Omar will end up in Canada sooner rather than later, and he'll likely be given a hero's welcome by his many admirers on the left. And if he doesn't return to the side of terrorism he will end up a very wealthy man courtesy of the Canadian taxpayer.

what's the difference between khadr and the soldier he killed? i mean, besides the fact that khadr was a boy when this was done.

is a uniform a license to kill? why were the families of the soldiers in the court room crying and demanding justice? do they cry for the hundreds of thousands of people, many civilians who have been killed by soldiers similar to the person who was killed by khadr?

the system is broken and many of you here have a broken moral compass.

Understanding how the system works in the first place is the key.....it can't be broken if you don't understand how it works or what is wrong with it....

The main difference was one group was following the rules and one was not, such as the example given to you by another poster, of cops and criminals....and yes the uniform does give you the right to use deadly force, provided you follow the rules....

It's been mentioned here on this forum that Omar will be treated as a national hero upon his return, heros carry alot of weight and can sway alot of people....don't think those terrorist groups will not be trying to cash in on that.

Plus the fact Omar is not stupid he knows he's not going to be well like in the most of the country, he feels abandoned or should be , and might want some revenge to go with perhaps that payday he might receive....SO ya he'll be on the watch list...

AG, he may not have been protected under the Geneva Convention but, if we're talking UN treaties, he should have been under the Convention on the Rights of the Child, at least from a Canadian perspective (recognizing that the US, alongside Somalia, is one of two nonsignatories).

And normally he would be, however one must follow the conventions to be afforded protection under them, we can't pick which one we like or dislike.

That being said something, last night i had a conversation with someone in the JAG office, while Omar has been charged and tried in the US some of the conventions the US has not signed as you suggest, and under Canadian law the findings may of been different...

That being said The child soldier agreement was never really challanged and i'm not sure why, nor did Canada challange it either. along with the rest of the world, that i'm aware of anyways. which leaqaves me of the opinion everyone is good with the fact that Omar was an illegal combatant and not afforded any protection under any of the conventions, beside a very few....

So he has Right to be a terrorist?

yes, he can be what ever he wants...his choice...

No one has a "Right" to be a terrorist, at least according to the legislative documents that I have been exposed to. Children, however, have a right to special recognition and treatment.

I'm not defending Omar or the Khadr's or AQ. I'm trying to explore the correct application of law and international treaty.
