I thought Calgary might be more christian than say montreal or toronto or vancouver. wow! Just wow... Calgary gets the progressive Naheed Nenshi and TO teeters on an outcome with Rob Ford at the helm - is this bizarro world? Given almost all our immigrants come from failed cultures I fail to see what we can learn from them - other than how to abandon our failed cultures for a better life elsewhere. Canadian multi-culturalism on display... please ignore those exploding head reactions to Calgary's mayoralty election results. From the center of the western Canadian, right-wing Conservative base, we give you Naheed Nenshi... the son of an immigrant family, an ethnic minority, non-white, an academic, left leaning... and... Canada's first Muslim mayor. Oh my! A grassroots campaign driven by volunteers has delivered Canada its first Muslim mayor – Mr. Nenshi, who scored a staggering win in Calgary’s mayor’s race Monday. He defeated two better-funded candidates, including one backed by Stephen Harper’s campaign team, and saw his support surge in the final few weeks. He survived a smear campaign and a telephone failure in the crucial final hours, before running away with what was to be a close vote. His campaign was branded the “Purple Revolution,” named for his campaign colour and one driven by a broad demographic that included strong youth support. Quote

I thought Calgary might be more christian than say montreal or toronto or vancouver. he followed the Obama game plan he went after the youth vote and they responded and voted, even my kids went out and voted I was in shock...now if someone could persuade the youth to actually vote in the next federal election and get rid of rob anders and his CPC gang...youth anywhere tend to be socially far ahead of the middle aged and boomer generation socially, being an ethnic and a muslim wasn't a issue for them...and he had a few other things going for him, obviously he was attractive to the large immigrant community... there was a portion of the electorate who wanted anyone but Barb Higgins, a celebrity newsreader with no real qualification to run a city... in public forums he performed well, gaining popularity with each appearance... and most of important of all he's smart Harvard grad and he's an expert on running non-profit organizations, the perfect qualification for running a city... M.Dancer Posted October 19, 2010 Report Posted October 19, 2010 Given that Alberta has aready sent the first Muslim to Parliament, I find the election to the peanut gallery a truly little league event. Michael Hardner Posted October 19, 2010 Report Posted October 19, 2010 Good for them and big deal... You are too hard to impress. If Calgary had elected a Francophone mayor would that knock your socks off ? What if she were also uni-lingually Francophone ? What if she were also uni-lingually Francophone ? ya, ya... it's such a Dancer non-event, we must attribute the national media focus to simply a 'slow news day'. And all those glowing congratulatory comments from Calgary Conservative MPs... Harper, Prentice and Richardson... no Dancer biggee!. Harper's comments including reference to Calgary being, "the heart of the New West". Prentice's comments stating it's, "an extremely exciting moment in the city's history. It speaks to what a young, diverse and dynamic city Calgary has become." ya, ya... it's such a Dancer non-event. Oh wait, Calgary Conservative MP, Jason Kenney sorta, kinda, agrees with Dancer... but then again, Kenney actively campaigned for one of the losing mayoralty candidates. It seems the best the Conservative Minister for Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism could offer was this all too revealing tweet that says more about Kenney than anything else: So Nahed's victory is important for lots of reasons, but the patronising "stunning breakthrough for diversity in Cgy" meme isn't one of them damn that tweeter thingee... the PMO has lost all control! M.Dancer Posted October 19, 2010 Report Posted October 19, 2010 Interestingly no accolades for Drayton Valley Alberta on their recent election of Moe Hamdon who is Muslim. ....maybe because having been mayor for the past 12 years, it's old news. Never the less, be the first to welcome Drayton Valley (pop 6,893) to the league of comsmopolitain cities and congradulate them on their electoral commitment to diversity.. Shady Posted October 19, 2010 Report Posted October 19, 2010 It's funny to watch people's reactions when their bigoted and stereotypical views are shattered in front of their eyes. Everyone that's "so suprised" illustrates just how bigoted and prejudiced they really are. Quote

Black Dog Posted October 20, 2010 Report Posted October 20, 2010 The fact he's a progressive-ish academic is more interesting to me than his race or religion. Calgary gets the Harvard educated Nenshi, Toronto gets college dropout Rob Ford. What a world. Quote

waldo Posted October 20, 2010 Report Posted October 20, 2010 Quite. Much more relevant than something that will in all liklihood have no bearing on his ability to lead a city. ya ya, Harper and Prentice are acknowledging Calgary's rise and forward movement based upon Naheed Nenshi's left-leaning academic credentials who would have thought that Calgary electing a left-leaning academic would have solicited congratulatory responses reflecting upon Nenshi with such comments as... "Harper including reference to Calgary being, "the heart of the New West"... and Prentice's comments stating it's, "an extremely exciting moment in the city's history. It speaks to what a young, diverse and dynamic city Calgary has become." newsflash! Harper, Prentice (and Richardson), 3 of Calgary's elected MPs, go 'ga ga' over a left-leaning academic being elected mayor in Calgary! Quote

mikedavid00 Posted October 20, 2010 Report Posted October 20, 2010 (edited) So I am suprised the first major Canadian City to elect a muslim to the post of mayor is Calgary. I thought Calgary might be more christian than say montreal or toronto or vancouver. 26% of Calgary are now visible minorities. When a riding turns 20% visible minority, they elect Liberal (and sometimes NDP). This is factual. Go look it up. I've been saying this for years to you guys and it goes in one ear and out the other. It's so frustrating talking to you guys because you let your inner biased ideals overcome the facts of math and reality. Eligible voters were 665,045. The voting turn out was %53.24. There was 354,070 voters. NOW LETS BREAK DOWN THE ACTUAL NUMBERS AND DEAL WITH FACTS: Winner - Naheed Nenshi Actual Votes - 140,263 Runner Up - Ric McIver Actual Votes - 112,386 3rd place Barb Higgins Actual Votes - 91,359 --- Total VISIBLE MINORITY (majority in many parts now) poplution in Calgary: 232,465 The difference in votes between the winner and runner up is only 27,877 people. Total ISLAMIC population in Calgary: 28,920 TOTAL POPULATION IN CALGARY: 1,071,515 --> THE OUTCOME WAS WAS SWAYED BY 27k Votes ONLY 15% OF CALGARIANS WANTS THIS GUY IN OFFICE. Why do the left here on the forums love immigrants? Because they know they are the only people who keep the Liberals elected. The 'party of immigrants'. That's why they are so loved and adored. We do not need these people here, they aren't required here, we have high unemployment, and don't have work for them. BUT AGAIN, THIS GOES IN ONE EAR AND OUT THE OTHER. dpwozney Posted October 20, 2010 Report Posted October 20, 2010 So I am suprised the first major Canadian City to elect a muslim to the post of mayor is Calgary. “... The City of Calgary is a Municipal Corporation in the Province of Alberta ...”, according to this pdf document. “A corporation is a fiction, by definition, ...”, according to Patrick Healy in a statement found in evidence provided to the Canadian Parliament's Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights in 2002. “A corporation is a ‘fiction’ as it has no separate existence, no physical body and no ‘mind’”, according to Joanne Klineberg in a presentation to the Canadian Aviation Safety Seminar in 2004. In the real world, how can a fiction elect any real natural person to a post of mayor? In the real world, how is it possible for any real natural person to be mayor of a fiction? Quote
