LCBO for sale says Liberals.

Recommended Posts

Well now we've been down this road before haven't we. The Tories were unable to sell it back in the 90's so I don't know if the Liberals will have some better luck. I hope so. Finally the provincial Liberals are beginning to see the light and want to sell things off and make government smaller and to do what? That's right save money.

Facing a $24.7-billion deficit, the largest in the province's history, the government has hired two banks to review assets such as Hydro One and the LBCO.

One possible roadblock to selling the LCBO is its 6,000 unionized workers,

I don't see it as a problem. Someone buys the LCBO, lays off all the unionized workers and restructures. Hiring people to work for it at $14/hr + benefits to start instead of $30. Owner has doubled his profits and people still have an income they can live off of.

I wonder if we're going to hear the socialists attacking the Ontario Liberals for their own massive debt. They blasted Harpers Tories over the debt that all parties agreed to spend. So now it's very funny how quiet they are when the Ontario Liberals have a massive debt of their own.

Mr. Halton Hills, if you enjoy wine, you'll re-think your privatization opinion on this matter. The LCBO brings in more tax dollars and offers more selection for the lowest price than ANY private booze palace could EVER DREAM OF. Wake up and understand that Ontario residents treat their spirits as sacred!

Right, except doing that was illegal last time I checked.

God I hope you're right. It's about time the Government ended their monopoly on the sale of alcohol.

I thought I have already corrected you on this earlier.

Alberta's private distribution network brings in the same per capita royalties to the province and offers many products at less cost that Ontarios's LCBO.

One of the things that endears me to you is your proven ability not to learn anything> I have already pointed out that LCBO clerks don't make 30 and hour and the starting wage is already around 15 and hour.

well it s a good/bad thing that a majority government is selling it then huh? (bad joke)

what we don't need to pay anyone, the unions are handling it?

Suddenly unemployment rates have dropped across ontario due to the upswelling of microbrewery start ups and bootleg moonshine stills. Just when doom seemed imperiled. The friendly lizard saves the day and mice everywhere rejoice for a better future. What a man. (for real no sarcasm)

An alternative to Ray days --- strike days the mcguinty way! heh? got a ring no?

The never ending ongoing debate. Conservatives wanted to privatize it in the 80s and then again in the 90s and the Liberals talked it up in the 80s and then Flaherty spouted off selling it during his leadership run. Now the Liberals are back at it again. The Spirit lobbiests are looking to put McGuinty into their rear pocket.

Odds that McGuinty will sell out are pretty good.

Not sure who the Spirit Lobbiest are (Edger Cayce?). Nor do I see why they would care...in either scenario. If the LCBo is to be sold, I have no doubt it would still be the Government Crown doing the buying (of the product) and the retail arm/distribution would be in the hands of private capital.

Either way, the manufacturer still sells directly to the province and the royalties from sales still go to the public purse as it does in Alberta.

When this issue was raised years ago during the Mike Harris era,I remember reading something about what happened in Alberta when liquor sales were privatized. This article basically stated that profits(taxes going to the gov't) went up,and the selection of booze to consumers was expanded.Sounds good to me.

I've been to Alberta, dude. The selection sucks and the prices are higher.

The producers and importers own the LCBO and all beer outlets anyway. What kind of ruse is this? How can so called governement sell what in absolute truth never belonged to the government to begin with? How can you sell what is a private concern and always has been. Everybody knows that the sale of all intoxicants started of in the realms of orgainized crime. So what are they doing here? Are they going to attempt to hand over more public money to private people? I guess what began witn crimminal intent may as well end with it. Booze trading is right up there with the dope buisness. Sound like the gov is about to hand over a huge bail out package to another group that does not need or diserve it for what they did to this nation under the guise of legit buisness. It would have been nice never to have brought these toxins into general social ecceptance to begin with..but just like pot and other drugs...it's all natural...and this buisness is natural to human nature....the guys who sell this shit refere to it privately as the Distroyer!
